The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR was a hugely disappointing spiritual successor to rails shooter Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, and one we described as “scruffy” in our dismal 4/10 review. Supermassive Games had promised to improve the PSVR2 title, and now it’s teasing a “major game update” on 21st July.
There are no patch notes just yet – they’re scheduled to be deployed the day the update drops – but a community manager for the Guildford developer has been teasing some of the improvements on Reddit. “There are plenty of texture/graphical changes and several exciting new features (including FSR and foveated rendering) coming in this patch to help address the reported graphical issues,” they confirmed.
Switchback VR was an ugly game at launch on PSVR2 – despite Sony’s new headset boasting much higher resolution than its predecessor, it actually looked worse than a lot of original PSVR games. The gameplay also wasn’t great, due to most enemies simply soaking up bullets. It’ll be interesting to see how far the developer’s gone here, but it seems fairly confident about the update.

I personally had a blast playing at launch. One of my favorite VR games this year. Got about halfway through, so looking to jump back in after the update.
Great. Been waiting for this to improved before purchase. It’s the only game I’ve preordered in a long while, and the only game for which I’ve cancelled a preorder ever.
Glass half full awaiting the update. Will probably purchase if its considered a 7 if reviewed again
Those octagonal rat swarms were just pathetic. The first game had better graphics than this one, which is just sad. I played Switchback for about an hour before removing it from storage, so I will download again and be ready for the Friday update. I hope it makes the game more worthy of its retail price.
I won't try it before i finish Synapse, tho. So, so dope.
Downloaded at launch, will try again when update drops.
