Just announced at Evo 2023, Under Night In-Birth 2 [Sys:Celes] is dashing and slashing to PS5 and PS4 next year. The latest instalment in the commonly-called UNI series, it doesn't look that much different to previous games — it's still got a lot the same character sprites and animations — but we're sure it's got plenty of changes under the hood.
The last UNI titles to release on PlayStation were Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st], which got a western launch all the way back in 2018, and the updated Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[cl-r], which landed in 2020. Niche fighting games, to be sure, but this is a franchise that offers a lot of frantic gameplay and intriguing characters. Not to mention naming conventions that are impossible to remember!
Developer French-Bread says this sequel is packing a new story, and it's going to utilise rollback netcode for a smoother online experience. Hurrah!
Under Night In-Birth 2 is targeting an early 2024 launch, but are you already feeling the hype? Don't you dare drop those corner combos in the comments section below.

Correction: the last UNI game on PlayStation was Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[cl-r] in 2020. But I understand the confusion. You would think something called Late[st] would be, y’know, the latest game in the series. And of course, the lovely Japanese video game naming schemes, mixing random words and punctuation so you don’t know what you’re looking at. 🤪
Edit: Fixed. This comment makes no sense now. 😖
@Impossibilium Thanks for the correction, for some reason I was thinking [cl-r] was a PC release!
Those names though, woof.
@ShogunRok You’re welcome. The only reason I knew about them is because I have them both on a wishlist, waiting for either of them to go on sale, but really preferring to get the most up-to-date version. Late[st] is discounted more often than [cl-r] though, so I have to look closely at the last bit of the name to not confuse the two.
I miss the days when games were called "Game"...and then the next in the series was called "Game 2".
Played the first, fairly enjoyable game but the naming is just...yeah. Looking forward to this depending on what's added/changed etc.
Jesus, these naming schemes.🤪
I enjoyed playing the first game (or one of its 5+ re-releases, don't remember which one), so I look forward to this one.
