We don't know the exact hows and whys, but the PS Portal appears to be sold out all over the place. Sony's remote play handheld launched just a couple of days ago in major territories, but you'll be hard pressed to track one down.
The device is currently listed as unavailable on Sony's own PlayStation Direct — both in the US and UK — and it's a similar story with most online retailers, like Amazon, GameStop, and GAME. Some sites state that more stock is expected soon, likely in time for the holiday season.
So, does Sony have a shock commercial success on its hands? Well, it's hard to say. It's entirely possible that the PS Portal has sold better than expected, but we're inclined to believe that, regardless of sales, Sony won't have produced and shipped many units to begin with.
It's also worth noting that Portals are popping up on sites like eBay, where resellers are unsurpsingly asking for more than the retail price of $200 / £200. If stock has been fairly limited, it's possible that scalpers have made a dent in the numbers.
We'll have to wait and see how the PS Portal performs over the holidays and beyond in order to get a clearer picture of the situation, but a sold out product is a good look for Sony regardless of the cause.

Well, they can have fun with the one I won't be buying.
I do think there's a lot of people buying this who don't understand that it's not a proper handheld. I'm sure plenty of parents are picking these thinking that it's basically a PSP that plays PS5 games.
I think the way Valve handled the Limited Edition OLED Steam Deck was the best way to combat scalpers, by restricting Steam accounts to not being able to order unless they have a purchase prior to November 2023.
If you buy from scalpers, you are the reason scalpers exist.
Not for me either ..
Different topic,
Ps5 price drop was shown in middle of England match..£379 for ol full fat version
@TheCollector316 then you are subjecting yourself to this nonsense, we are better than that
I will gladly buy from a scalper… if the demand isn’t there and they sell at a loss
Got one and works very well. Very happy with it. Does what it say it’ll do. Will be able to play in bed, so all good 👍
@Pranwell
The scalpers can have fun with the one I'm not buying.
The people who bought it can have as much fun as they want. 😁
I'd imagine with these as far as Sony is concerned a sale is a sale and they'll end up in the hands of players eventually.
It's just a peripheral like a Dualsense Edge after all.
Got a Steam Deck OLED which has a very good PS remote play app on it too. I feel like scalpers will thankfully lose money on the Portals.
Mine came this morning.
The seal on the box was opened so I was half expecting to find a rolling pin inside or something.
Thankfully the Portal was in there. I tried holding it for a minute, then packed it away for Christmas morning.
I'm very excited to try it properly.
I don't know what all the hate is about this device. I pre-ordered mine. Used it a few times now. Works flawlessly. Amazing to be able to lay on the couch and play any game I want while my wife or kid watches TV.
Just had a look around they seem to be all sold out and there was a good few in stock at Smyths toys UK, Sony seem to have a good start with the portal.

PlayStation direct UK store says check back Wednesday 22/11
@riceNpea they are all over eBay with hundreds sold at around £100more than PS sells them for.
So sadly scalpers are on it. Even more sad is the fact hundreds don’t care and buy off them at inflated prices.
I'm curious if this is genuine customers purchasing this or if it's scalpers eating up all the stock in the hopes to flip it. Hate to say it but I'd love to see the device fail just so the scalpers lose a ton sitting on gadgets that nobody wants.
@JalapenoSpiceLife
Are you building off of what I said? I don't feed scalpers.
No interest. Saw it late last night for its regular msrp & had no urge to get it. Something like $75 - $125 would be much more reasonable for an accessory.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner I'm sure they are, it's inevitable. That being said I don't know why it can be inferred that scalpers have bought so many that it somehow taints the sellout of Portal. That's pure speculation for the sake of sensationalism.
There’s still some serious Dunning-Kruger effect going on, where despite articles like this and evidence showing the device being sold out, as well as the glowing reviews from critics, and loads of positive feedback from people who actually own the Portal and are loving it, and yet there’s still all these people who “know better” (just because they personally don’t want one) and are convinced it’s going to be a failure and the device has no real target audience. 😒
Huh, well I guess some people want it. I sure don't.
I doubt they made that many, but it's surprising it's seeing demand.
I knew this was going to be a successful product 🤣 There are a lot more dads/husbands/boyfriends out there that have to share a TV than people realize.. and now they can do that and still game. Or people that just like handhelds. Also, it's just a very well made, quality device. Waiting for this to launch in my country 😬
@Shepherd_Tallon Received mine today and downloaded updates and tested it out. Same for me though back in the box it goes until Christmas.

@JalapenoSpiceLife What only PS5 games can You play on SteamDeck? Can i play Spiderman 2 on SD? Can i play on SD for 6h straight? Does SD have Addaptive Triggers? PPL like you are just clueless mass. Portal is NOT a console. It is ACCESSORY just like DualSense, PSVR or Pulse 3D. Since my TV is mostly occupied by my kids watching cartoons or playing on Xbox Series S and the fact that i travel a lot for work and use hotels(and their wifi's) I will definietivly gonna buy Portal. It is great quality ACCESSORY and well priced too.
An official case for the thing would be nice too..
I may get one in the future. I tried out streaming to my Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra phone the other day. It worked really well.
I connected a controller and of I went. I tried indies and big games but found. I ended up playing smaller indie games more. I think I enjoyed those more due to the smaller screen.
There's definitely a market for Portal. Enjoy your gaming guys and gals ☺️
I'm sure Sony will make plenty more of them, clearly a market for it. Hopefully Sony considers making another PSP one day. Unlikely but you never know.
How was my feedback unconstructive that it deserved deletion? It simply pointed out, with some bemusement, the needlessly negative slant the article takes based on no evidence whatsoever in relation to Portal selling out. That's a helpful perspective from a longterm consumer, with a PhD in English, of web-based written media and its composition.
@__jamiie It literally says on the front of the box ''remote player for PS5'' and ''PS5 and Wi-Fi required''. If people make €200 purchases without a single thought, it's their fault really.
With a screen three times as big as my phone, I could see myself watching Netflix on this in bed or something. With the added benefit of playing PS5 games whenever I'm not at home.
Oddly enough, this appeals more to me than the PSVR2 at the moment.
@riceNpea It's the same reason I left the Eurogamer community after being around for the majority of it's existence. Apparently feedback is only constructive if it aligns with what the higher ups want to hear. Remember back in the day when freedom of speech and opinion was a thing on community forums/message boards. Sigh
@Octane Why are you angry at me??? I know what it is. Lots of people won't though. Advertising is brilliant for showing a product to be everything it's not.
@Tr3mm0r I disagree slightly. I count PSVR2 as a console because there are hundreds of games you can only play in the headset.

Not for me, but I know several parents who bought this and are super excited to get more gaming time while their partner/kids hogs the TV.
@__jamiie Oh. Didn't know that!
@__jamiie I'm not angry at you. I'm just saying that if people buy it thinking it's a console, it's really their fault. It's not like box doesn't tell you what it is and what you need to use it.
@NinjaNicky I’m not sure. I don't have my TV set up to automatically switch inputs.
I was surprised by the reviews so went to pick one up and found this.
Thing is, scalpers will never succeed with this product I feel. I just don't really need it honestly. The lack of stock doesn't push me to a scalper, it just makes me shrug and go about my day.
@Tr3mm0r you do you then it's your money after all 🤷♀️ but know there are other devices that can do the same thing out there? not sure why my post was removed, i wasn't offensive in anyway? steam deck OLED is a thing and is one of an alternative, nothing offensive about that?
@riceNpea my post was also deleted with no qualms so i'm shrugging and confused just as you are LOL
@Shwing true facts on that one!
@NinjaNicky ok, you have good points about that, especially with the tinkering, the portal and the deck are just made for whatever it works with, i agree with that
@JalapenoSpiceLife "you do you then it's your money after all 🤷♀️ but know there are other devices that can do the same thing out there? not sure why my post was removed, i wasn't offensive in anyway? steam deck OLED is a thing and is one of an alternative, nothing offensive about that?"
Like i said. Steam Deck CAN NOT do same things like Portal simply because it can't run PS5 exclusives or games i own on PS Store. I have almost 130 games in PS Store and 6 (six) on Steam.
No idea why Your comment was removed either. I didn't find it offensive nor did I report it.
I'll just wait till they have stock, I refuse to buy from a scalper.
It's just a peripheral. And not one that needs a dedicated ecosystem like VR. I think it's gonna be very successful. Not everyone got a use for it. Some of us though love to play in bed or everywhere and that's where Portal shines. I don't get the hate, its not super expensive like other Sony products, its not cheap either but its affordable for most people that could afford PS5. I also got a series S, and if ever Microsoft releases a similar product I would consider buying it. Even if it cost as much as Series S
Pretty sad to see the plan worked. As actual legitimate accounts regarding the performance of this device are starting to emerge and indicate terrible, highly variable and inconsistent performance of the remote play system as has been the case for some time. Even when playing at home in the same network as the Ps5 you are playing from.
Despite the overpriced piece of garbage tech and whether it's price or asvertised use case suits you or not; your purchase is a statement of approval and greenlight for subpar products and greed driven drivel to continue. 👍On top of that it performs that use case worse than many other options out there.
@NinjaNicky no it doesn’t
@__jamiie I too am waiting for all the negative, raging reviews from people who bought it and and are astonished to find that it isn't a PS5 handheld.
@Tr3mm0r "Like i said. Steam Deck CAN NOT do same things like Portal simply because it can't run PS5 exclusives or games i own on PS Store. I have almost 130 games in PS Store and 6 (six) on Steam.

CORRECTION last of us, god of war and other exclusives like uncharted are on steam and available to purchase, i have a lot of games on PSN also but you have to be a premium member to stream anything to other devices but it is possible with a bit of tinkering, just giving some light on the situation 🤔
Just a few days ago nobody seemed to want one. Odd.
@JalapenoSpiceLife Spiderman 1 remaster, Miles Morales, GoW i completed 2 years ago.
Can i play Spiderman 2, GoW: Ragnarok, Bloodborne, Gran Tourismo 7 on Steam Deck? No? So stop saying SD and Portal are the same.
@NinjaNicky @JalapenoSpiceLife @Tr3mm0r You can absolutely use remote play functionality on steam deck Via third party apps that perform far better than the PS remote play app. do you guys even do any research before you come back with a response?
If you have the expendable funds to get the steam deck over the useless portal, absolutely do so.
@KundaliniRising333 3rd party means you have to jailbreak? Is 3rd party breaking the EULA You sign when starting up Steam Deck for the first time? Do You even read licence?
@KundaliniRising333
No thanks... Steam Deck with all graphic options lasts less than 1 hour on battery (Cyberpunk 2077) and have no addaptive triggers or amazing haptics dualsense has. I don't want to break laws and pirate console games to run on it. I have SIX legally bought games on Steam that i don't feel like to play anymore. So Steam Deck might be for You but it definitevely isn't for me.
I'd love to just turn on my PS5 and play Spiderman 2 when i am in Germany (i am from Poland btw) in a hotel with a free wifi without some third party shieeeet and just native.
We got it Portal isn't for You. Move on.
@NinjaNicky @Tr3mm0r I hear you both I do. I just worry that the performance of the portal has been vastly glazed over.
Those that don't have a vested advertising interest that have tested it out report huge bandwidth related bottlenecks that result in bad performance alongside consistency spikes when in the exact same spot over time. Couple that with a lackluster screen and it just seems like a complete waste of money unless you are playing games that you aren't affected by experiencing stutters latency issues, freezing, crashing, and visual glitches during gameplay. all of which are directly related to poor remote play performance regardless of your internet connection strength and speed.
@KundaliniRising333
Don’t know what you’ve been viewing, but I’ve got it and watched a lot of reviews. Only bottleneck is when downloading something on the PS5 at the same time. Screen is great when indoors, only poor in the sun.
Just like with the PS5 im in no hurry I'll buy one down the line.
@KundaliniRising333 what are the word you are doing grouping me with these idiots? my intentions are not the same as these people, i have a steam deck OLED and have no intentions on buying a portal in anyway so i'm confused by this approach? 🤷♀️🤷♀️
More of an affirmation rather than grouping you with the cult followers
@Tr3mm0r steam deck has many positives and you don't even have to use it for games if you wish, what maybe for you may not for others, each to their own
@JalapenoSpiceLife No doubt about that but you have to understand that people that buy Portal don't look for a different console but to play their PS collection in bed or when their TV is occupied.
