Now this seems like a match made in heaven, right? Balatro is an indie game that combines poker with roguelike elements and all the synergistic shenanigans of deck builders. It's just been confirmed for release on PS5 and PS4 as well as other platforms, and it's just around the corner, launching on 20th February 2024.
Developed by LocalThunk, the game is basically about playing valid poker hands in order to beat blinds by earning a minimum number of chips. However, other layers complicate matters; you'll collect special Joker cards that can seriously enhance your current run, while Tarot cards can also join the deck, upgrading basic cards with even more effects. By combining poker hands with souped-up cards, multipliers, and other crazy effects, you can create very powerful decks for some very satisfying scores.
It looks like it has potential, and frankly, doesn't seem too intimidating even if you're not familiar with poker itself. At a certain point it looks like the game's poker base is sidelined anyway. There's not long to wait until we can check this out for ourselves, and from what we've seen, we're pretty confident this will be a good time.
