A series constant, Final Fantasy's Moogle is a familiar sight to many, and along with the Chocobo, serves as a mascot of sorts for the franchise. But the busted-looking Moogle we got in the recently released Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has been rejected by a particular segment of the community, who are convinced the gritty redesign looks more like Matthew McConaughey playing a drug mule named Miguel than a fantastical portmanteau of mole and bat.
Corraled by Eurogamer, a vocal minority is calling for a return to the cuddly, classic Moogle of yesteryear, rejecting the cracked-out koala bear Square Enix ultimately decided to go with. In fact, the Japanese combination developer-publisher weighed in on the discourse as it reached a fever pitch, proclaiming: "We love all of our Moogles and will not stand for this, kupo!"
How do you feel about Square Enix's decision to depict Moogles like this in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth? Do you like this new look, or would you rather something a little less haunting? Let us know in the comments section below.

Alright, alright, alright, kupo.
Funny these are the same four tweets EG had on their article hours before. Lazy work guys (could've at least searched for 3-4 more tweets).
Also, for a Playstation website it is weird y'all haven't covered the new Ronin trailer yet but I guess talking about a FO tv show is more important. Odd that the reddit community argument between a dev and reddit for HD2 hasn't been covered either
Honestly... I don't mind 'em. Moogles have always stayed roughly the same with minor changes, these really aren't that different. I mean why stop at FF7 Rebirth Moogles vs. FF16 Moogles? Why not compare all Moogle versions?
I like the FF XVI look better but the FF VII Rebirth design isn't that bad.
FF9 still has the best Moogles, followed by 12
I thought they looked fine until I saw a post comparing them to the weird taxidermized fox from memes - now I always laugh when I visit the moogles.
I am sorry, not trying to be disrespectful, but how little entitled bratts some members of the gaming community are. Now they are trying to dictate how the style design for a minor "character" looks? What's next? Their names on the credits? Geez ..
Sweatband moogles are to cool to care about what twitter weirdos think.
They do kind of look like a cuddly toy that was put in the wash, came out worse for wear... and then was possessed by a ghost.
FFXIV and XII have the best moogles. Kupo.
Yeah honestly I did not like the design as soon as I saw it. It also did not help that the voice acting for it was awful.
I'm surprised people like 12's moogles. Always found them too "unmooglelike" for my tastes. The best designs are 6,9,13, 14 and 16 I think. 7 Rebirth's do weird me out though I've gotta say.
@spcspc They just dont like the design, what's hard to understand about that?
I got used to the design 4 years ago when Remake released.
@spcspc
some of the iconic character designs should not be changed, like ever. look at how Dragon Quest treats its enemy designs.
this moogle design is just horrible.
The things gamers choose to care about are weird.
I like the new design personally. It actually looks like a creature whereas usually moogles just look like a ball of cotton candy.
How slim is news in general when all online sites seem to post is literal Reddit comments and crap from twitter/x? It's all I see in my feeds, little bit of actual gaming news and then 10 features on what some rando moaned about in an online "community"
I MIss the old days of a monthly magazine 🤣
I love this 🤣 and yeah they look creepy
Final Fantasy, occasionally deviating from its common moogle design features? NEVER.
I don't get it, they don't look that bad. It's just the teeth I think that make them look off, but it's not something I care that much about since the next main FF game will have a completely different design like all mainline FF games do.
D o n t w o r r y, t h e y r e y o u r f r i e n d s..,
@breakneck Vacation maybe? Push Square is usually pretty on top of things but yeah, a little disappointing that I had to watch the new Ronin diary on a different website yesterday.
I asked my 9 year old daughter which she preferred, she said the new one, end of discussion 😁
I loved the original Moogle design and have to agree that the changes are a bit jarring. I definitely prefer the pointed ears and other features that made them more cat-like. I also think the proportions are a major source of the complaints. They had a cute and whimsical air about them before, but now...well, let's just say they look "off". But, for better or worse, it is what it is now.
People have too much free time on their hands. This shouldn't be a thing at all.
I didn't have ANY thoughts about the look of moogles until reading this. I choose to continue doing that.
After slipping on banana peels, hit by wind blades, popped by fireworks and even got smacked by a ball of something. After all that, I returned those little ***** to their tree. The thanks I get? Some lousy gems and spare magazines. Kupo!
@Nepp67
Study, get a degree, get hired by Square Enix, become Art Director and voilá!! That's when you will have an opportunity to create the sexiest, most good looking, true to the "original" Mogul!
@Stale-Bread It tells you a lot about the quality of those who cover these type of news.
(And I am ready for this comment to get deleted).
@nhSnork I mean honestly that goes for practically every creature in Final Fantasy. Just look at the design differences between 15's and 16's Ifrit lol
I definitely prefer the older design. The new one looks like a game's parody of Moogles, called something like Goomles.
There adorable people r hating to much
Honestly, it could've been much worse but nowhere near as bad as the Sonic design for the first movie. Still, I prefer XVI's moogle a lot more since it's just XIV.
This title is correct. Those moogles are freaky.
@spcspc You pay $69.99 for a game you can bitch about it all you want. The design of these critters are freaky. My first thought when I first entered the mushroom as well. I paid $380 for mine, so I am going to btch about it lol.
What the? This is not a moogle. It's a tiny bear. 😂
