There’s been drama brewing in the HoYoverse fandom for some time, but it may have reached boiling point following the announcement of Honkai: Star Rail’s latest update, Into the Yawning Chasm. As the game celebrates its first anniversary, the gacha game developer announced rewards of up to 1,600 Stellar Jade and up to 20 Star Rail Special Passes. For the uninitiated, this represents 30 free pulls on a character or weapon banner.
Genshin Impact, meanwhile, offered just 13 free pulls for its Latern Rite Festival update, and fans are getting increasingly frustrated that Honkai: Star Rail players are getting a better deal. This anger has been compounded by the fact that players of HoYoverse’s turn-based RPG recently received five-star character Dr. Ratio at no cost, while many feel crucial quality of life improvements have been coming quicker to the developer’s newer title.
It's all resulting in an aggressive undercurrent running throughout the community, as Genshin Impact fans feel they’re being short changed. This author plays both games and there’s no question the rewards are better in Honkai: Star Rail right now, although things could potentially change once Zenless Zone Zero releases later in the year, and HoYoverse puts in the extra effort to establish that tile instead.
It’ll be interesting to see whether all this pressure encourages the Chinese developer to throw Genshin Impact players a bone, or whether it ultimately knows its enthusiast community is going to cough up for characters regardless – no matter how much it complains online. Either way, things are getting toxic among the communities of both games, and it presents an interesting challenge for HoYoverse to overcome as it attempts to please the audiences of two extremely popular but ultimately quite similar titles.

Both games are popular... But Genshin is vastly more so. And that's the reason why the devs sweeten the deal for jumping into Honkai.
I play both the games from time to time and both are providing a lot of entertainment. I just think Honkai players can celebrate that their game is the best, and let their Honkai peers try to catch up.
The devs don't play favourites, they play budget goals and how to reach them.
Let’s get that Ginseng impact, honky rail star team death match underway then. 💥 🤜 🤛 🚂
FinishHim: Death Pact & Hokaido: Star Wars
@Dunkin Precisely man! I had a look at the community forums and it's pretty much just Genshin players throwing childish tantrums.
The only reason HSR is more generous than Genshin is because there are dozens of turn based gacha games out there that it has to compete with. Genshin has almost no competition. Simple as that.
People will always complain about things they get for free...
Genshin makes billions no matter what the devs do so they're fine just sitting back and raking it in for now.
This reminds me of all the long term customers of cable tv companies, mobile phone companies, and even banks, complaining that new customers get better deals and discounts than existing customers.
Is it fair? No. Is it the way it's always been as companies disregard their current customer base while trying to woo new customers? Yes. 🤷♂️
It is fun though to watch, gamers take it to another level. 😂
@Shigurui Think Wuthering Waves has any chance of putting a dent in Genshin's community?
@Kelrics90 - I think WW will steal a bit of Genshin's lunch money initially but that's about all. That said I do think it has the potential to co-exist quite happily and build a large enough playerbase to thrive but it certainly won't be a Genshin killer. Nothing will.
@Shigurui Genshin can only really kill Genshin. If it suddenly started phoning it in players would look for something else but it consistently drops great updates and has nearly completely avoided the power creep that kills so many gachas.
That gives me the weebie jeebies
I have absolutely no idea what any of this is about but read the article anyway.
I still have absolutely no idea what any of this is about but enjoyed the article.
You play them? O.o
Gacha games are traps. Get off that stuff.
Anyways, i am here chuckling at the whole thing cause it's like two mutts fighting for scraps while on a leach from the rich owner. 🤷
Only the house wins with these games.
I still haven’t played either one. 🤷🏾♂️
@shonenjump86
With a user name like shonenjump86, I am surprised you haven't...lol...
I have tried both and aside from the gacha mechanics, these games are loads of entertainment for literally zero money. It's only when someone weebs out that their wallets start to bleed. Avoid that and you can have HOURS of Waifu and Husbando fun.
@MikeOrator I told myself I would try em out someday. Genshin Impact looks like the one I’ll start off with first.
