Having had a few days to sit with the news that Larian Studios, creators of 2023's breakout RPG, Baldur's Gate 3, has scrapped plans for DLC and will not be developing the inevitable next game in the series, we can't help but feel the move was a deeply-baller one. Going out on the highest possible note, outdoing even BioWare's iconic earlier entries, it's time to move on for Larian, and we'll gladly follow. Parent company Hasbro, however, wasted no time, threatening still-in-shock audiences that more D&D games are on the way: "Watch this space."
Following the interview with IGN in which Larian director Swen Vincke revealed the studio would leave the series behind, Hasbro provided a statement to the outlet, thanking the developer for its hard work, work that netted Hasbro some $90 million for little effort (then fired most of the team responsible): "Larian has been an incredible partner, and together we are proud of the success of Baldur's Gate 3. Watch this space for more on some awesome D&D games we are bringing to life through Hasbro's studios and our network of licensing partners."
The tale of how Larian acquired the Baldur's Gate IP from Wizards of the Coast, a subsidiary of Hasbro, is fascinating enough, but suffice it to say the developer spent many years chasing that dream. Selling more than 10 million copies across all platforms, this massive success will no doubt allow Larian to pursue its creative ambitions without splitting the proceeds. Previously, the Belgian developer said it would return to its excellent Divinity: Original Sin series, and even more recently, the studio is already hard at work on its next game.
Are you excited about the future of the Baldur's Gate series? What do you think of Larian's decision to leave it all behind? Let us know in the comments section below.

Glad Larian is moving on. I can't wait to see what they are working on next. Hope they take a serious vacation first though. Well deserved.
Good news for Larian. Honestly, unlocking mod support means it will live on forever, with fans creating entire modules and adventures out of it, you'll see, so they didn't need to do anything else. But the more Hasbro tightens its grip on D&D, the more its slipping through their fingers, and if the last year or so tells us anything, we may need to be ready for some bad times ahead until they're done milking it and someone else can cast Resurrection on it.
It's quite a wild title for the article "Hasbro threatens to make more D&D games". Why is that a threat? They might even make some good ones.
Obviously Hasbro and WOTC are not popular companies, but neither is EA or Ubisoft but we don't go around saying they're threatening to make games.
@Coversnail Daedalic Entertainment, the creators of LOTR: Gollum, are the ones that can make a threat of developing a game
All of the D&D, with none of the talent. Clearly a winner recipe.
Damn 10 million in sales and only profited 90 million damn that feels low
I'm not sure the word "threatening" is the word I'd use. What about just "teasing" more to come? It's not like Larian is the only good developer out there after all. It's still very possible for another good D&D game in the future from someone else.
BG3 is the game that got Larian a big boost in popularity. I'm sure there are other devs would jump at the chance to get that popularity boost for themselves by working with Hasbro. Sure Hasbro has their issues but surely no one actually thought BG3 would be the last D&D game ever right?
I wouldn't want to be the dev team following the Larian version lol they will probably lose their minds and end up with a half baked product
To anyone who doesn't understand the articles title, Hasbro and WotC have been basically going to war with their fan base with how they're running D&D into the ground. With Hasbro making $90M from Baldur's Gate 3 last year, you can be sure that this company was bad practices will only be emboldened in their (not Larians) new direction. Believe me, as a D&D dork, it is a threat coming from Hasbro.
Honestly this sub series of D&D has a history of passing from developer to developer after each game or so.and honestly, that's kinda cool.

Hopefully we might get an action RPG (think Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance) in the same world.

I've heard whispers that the relationship between Larian and Wizards of the Coast may have soured somewhat, and I suspect that they partly lay behind why Larian will not make another Baldur's Gate title.
I honestly cannot see any other developer being capable of capturing the magic of a Larian game, and to some extent, whomever takes over the mantle of making that next BG game is taking on a poisoned chalice because 4 will compared to the impeccable 3, and will likely be reviewed far less favourably. Just how many developers would wish to take on that challenge, and more importantly, would be capable of doing so, is perhaps questionable.
As for Larian, my view is they have no peers. They are hands down the best developer out there, and Sven is a charismatic leader full of energy. Whether it be another Divinity game, or something completely different, I will be first in line to pre-order the game. I kick-started Divinity Original Sin 2, and pre-ordered the Early Access to BG3, and neither disappointed. Just cannot wait to see what magic Larian cast next...
@Coversnail
I think the headline is what is called "taking the piss". Try not to read things so literally, it's just a gaming website meant for entertainment.
Maybe Capcom can pick up the D&D IP rights for BG4, so we can have the microtransactions we've always dreamed of...
@Fiendish-Beaver Obsidian could do it. And they have the MS money to do it. Feargus & Tim were some of the leads behind the original BG1/2/SoA. Lots of Obsidian staff worked on the originals. Bioware gets most of the credit, but they were mostly responsible for the Infinity Engine and plot, the Black Isle guys did a lot of the heavy lifting for gameplay design still built on by Larian. And did the OG Icewind Dale, Planescape Torment, and fixed Neverwinter 2 to feel proper after the weird Bioware Neverwinter 1. Until Larian there's nobody I'd have trusted D&D 2 OTHER than the Obsidian guys.
Only thing is they're building Avowed. Not sure how valuable MS would think the D&D license would be for them.
How about a new Dark Alliance game, instead of shipping out the old ones for 20 quid each... 🙄
@Czar_Khastik please! I’ll do anything! Take the precious! Just let my life not lose 10 hours!
I understand what you are getting at, @NEStalgia, but in all honesty, there is a night and day difference between the original Baldur's Gate games and BG3. BG3 stands head and shoulders above every other game (in my opinion, it is quite literally the best game ever made). I just cannot see anyone matching its quality, no matter their pedigree.
I absolutely understand that it is just my opinion, but for me, the top two games ever made were both made by Larian, with DoS2 being in second place, but even that pales in comparison to BG3.
Before BG3 released (in full) I was saying that it would win every Game of the Year award going, and I was not wrong. It's just something that very, very few developers can achieve. Larian are quite literally peerless...
@Fiendish-Beaver To be fair, I haven't played BG3 yet. Ironically, I consider BG2 one of my top 10 games of all time, but the marketing for 3 has actually failed to click with me for some reason (you'd think I'd be hyped) so I was surprised at the massive praise and hype it's had. If it's really THAT amazing, you may be right, but I'd be surprised if the previously "AA" Larian could do that with BG that the Obsidian crew couldn't at least match them. That having been said I personally couldn't really love DoS2 as much as BG2 so it may come down to "Larian vs Black Isle/Obsidian/Bioware fans"
Not going to be a follow up to BG3 but looking forward to what the Demio developers are going to do with the D&D licence.
Obviously, @NEStalgia, whatever we think, it is just our opinion, but with that said, I'd love to see what you think after having played BG3. It builds on the games that went before it, and so I struggle to believe that if you enjoyed the originals, that you would not also enjoy the third.
Maybe wait for a deep sale for BG3 and then take the plunge. I don't think you will regret it...
@Fiendish-Beaver Yeah, it's on my wishlist, I basically buy everything only once it hits at least 20%, it's my sweet spot for pricing. My backlog is deep enough, anything I buy is for 2029 at this point, lol. I do expect I'll like if if it's true to the originals. Somehow the marketing actively turned me off and I expected a dumpster fire so I was shocked when everyone started heralding it as the best thing ever! Kind of looking forward to it. But also overwhelmed with yet another enormous game on the backlog pile, and for some reason I have actual dumpster fires I'm curious about that I'll probably end up playing first (Forspoken! lol)
In all honesty, @NEStalgia, I think if you were to look at the literally hundreds of games in my library that I have bought, and have yet to play, you would feel pretty good about your backlog. I have also have dozens of games that I have bought full-price as pre-orders that I have not touched yet, and that includes Avatar, for which I paid over £100 for the top edition. I'm trying to be better this year (as much as anything because I cannot afford to keep doing this) but I am extremely weak-willed... 😂
What a bizarre headline.
Great, now they’re gonna beat it like a dead horse
