Assassin's Creed Red, the next game in Ubisoft's popular series, is starting to sound like it's a lot closer to Assassin's Creed Valhalla — at least in terms of structure — than people might realise. This is according to an exclusive report from Insider Gaming, which suggests that the upcoming title is very much built upon the foundations of Valhalla and its core systems.
Combat, for example, is reportedly "somewhat similar", except there's "a lot more gore". An interesting point, given that Valhalla's combat is already quite gory, featuring the removal of limbs and heads when performing finisher attacks. With that in mind, we're left wondering just how bloody Red will be.
What's more, the settlement system that was introduced in Valhalla will make a return in Red. Apparently, it's "a major evolution" of what came before, letting players construct and customise a location known as "the Hideout".
Valhalla's settlement building is somewhat limited; you can choose to plop different buildings down in set locations and decorate the surrounding area with various objects, but progression is mostly linear. It sounds like Red will allow for a lot more freedom.
However, despite these immediate similarities, it's also said that Red will utilise "a substantial evolution" of the Anvil game engine that Valhalla is based on. Supposedly, this means we're getting a dramatic overhaul with regards to "animations, parkour mechanics, dynamic weather, and more". This should mean that Red won't come across as a reskin, for lack of a better word.
A full Assassin's Creed Red reveal is expected to happen relatively soon — perhaps during a Ubisoft showcase in the summer. But until then, let us know about your hopes and dreams for the project in the comments section below.

Did any expect much different? Didn’t Ubisoft already say mirage would be like old games and red more like the most recent ones?
So they appeal for both fans.
Personally I enjoyed Valhalla, abit long in the tooth. But honestly if you drop the AC from Valhalla it wouldn’t have been criticised so much.
That sounds terrible. The setting will be wasted entirely.
This should have taken cues from Mirage. A focus on gore was the last thing we needed in “stealth” (it’s supposed to be) series game focusing on ninjas.
I really hope this Anvil "overhaul" reintroduces player-character clothing physics, which were puzzlingly removed from Valhalla completely. Mirage has a bit added, but it's still not as good as it was when it peaked with Origins. I wonder if the developer in responsible for that left the company and took their insight with them?
Sounds good, look forward to seeing some gameplay
So worthless tripe then? Got it 👌
Valhalla was one of my least favourite games, hopefully this will be better than the last two AC games.
Valhalla was ok but waaaaay to bloated.
To be honest I'm more concerned about the fact that they're going to make you play as a character based on Yasuke instead of, you know, a japanese.
So just the usual Ubisoft garbage, its a hard pass from me
In my opinion AC is only as good as it's setting. I've never found the gameplay or story to be compelling in AC games, but you better believed I loved exploring ancient Egypt and Greece, but found exploring swamplands of England quite boring in Valhalla. Hopefully Japan setting will be great to explore.
@Jamesblob that’s like saying you played spider man 1 so you’ve already played Miles Morales and Spider man 2 also 🙄
Oh well, it’s at least a new colour; red.
The next installment will probably be named Blue..
This is offered in such broad terms that I'm not worried, yet. Of course there will be similarities, AC has always recycled certain ideas, while others go away for awhile, and may sometimes make a return. The last extended break allowed for some big changes to be made with Origins, and I still hope to see something similar.
Why would anyone expect anything else? It was their best ever selling Assassins Creed. Not that I like the bloat personally.
Playing the latest Hitman trilogy made me realise that what I really want AC to be is Hitman in a historic setting. I'd love the freedom to investigate targets and locations, and figuring out how to get in and out without anyone ever knowing I was there.
If any game devs are reading, do it, and steal AC's lunch.
@Jaz007 never played tenchu on ps1 I take ot?
Valhalla was the RPG entry that actually brought me around to appreciating those entries more so I'm down for this. I also liked the linear progression on the settlement. It felt cozy and didn't take up too much time from the rest of the game.
I hope the expanded version in Red doesn't turn it into AC Animal Crossing or something though. Dondoko Island in Infinite Wealth proved to me I'm just not at all into that sort of thing.
As long as it also doesn't take 90 hours to get to the end of the story, I'm ok with that. Valhalla was just far too long and the narrative lost all it's steam along the way. The final third of that game was a total slog for me.
Perfect, then.

That sucks. I dont want to play another 100 hours of Valhalla re-skinned. I already did that. Didnt even play the DLC because I didnt want another 30 hours.
Welp Guess I won't bother with this one then.
I'm not a fan of these way to long waste your time games.
This is Awesome! I loved Valhalla and this is exactly how games should be. Huge open world games with a crap ton of locations to explore, collectibles to find and side missions to take on. The building of a Hideout is always welcome in my opinion. I love the direction of the current Assassins Creed games so much more than the original ones. I will be putting at least a hundred hours into Red and I can't wait to start it!
What Ubisoft does really well:
History and setting. And a fun gameplay loop, to an extent. And then there's usually a random bats*** crazy story tacked on each time, which is... you know, the basis of AC since day one and the overall story is just so big it can't really be contained any more. And then there is usually a bunch of padding which people can take or leave.
But what I hope they introduce into this one is a more focused story based around the actual protagonist, with some actual emotional resonance. And a slower, more considered, and weighty combat model. (And lots of sandbox bases to clear, which probably peaked with Origins' desert forts, as they were really fun to scout and clear out)
If there's any mention of 'cult' i'll probably just bang my head against a wall instead though, they really need to freshen up the enemies, and looked to be on track with that by the end of Valhalla, by basically clearing out to start fresh. (But then they released a prequel with more of the cult again, so... please, no more)
I love everything Viking so Valhalla should have been right up my alley. And when it came to PS PLUS I dove straight in, and my overall experience is the following:
I didn't like it. Other games had better story, a more interesting map and scenery (this was too big!), better combat- and stealth mechanics and so on. I really wanted to like it, but I stopped around the 4-7 hour mark satisfied with the fact I would miss out on it if it somehow improved over play time. If the world doesn't give me the perfect Viking game, I might in the future revisit this game for a second opinion.
Valhalla was just too much, of everything. I've never been more ready to move on from a game than I was when I finished Valhalla. I greatly preferred Odyssey and personally think that is the best AC game.
@Somapix Valhalla wasnt long if you went for story. Why lie if you liked side missions that is different thing.
@REALAIS sure I didn't just mainline the main story (because why buy a big open world game and just do that?) and I dipped into a few side missions and other activities to level up my character and explore the map a bit, but I am far from a completionist and didn't come close to 100%. I'd say I played it at the regular pace it is intended to be played at, and it took me around 90 hours to get to the end of it. The core narrative about you and your brother being constantly interrupted by having to go to another region and do 2-4 hours of samey missions there with characters I wasn't interested in totally killed the pacing of the main story too. I didn't hate the game at all, but it was definitely too long and padded out in my opinion.
@Somapix but that how games are, some of them. Look at FF7 Rebirth. If you want to max out some cool builds it will take ages. 7 possible companions. That game for would take more than Valhallas 140hrs to go for some 90% content.
Yeah, I got 140hrs in Valhalla without Ragnarok DLC and I didnt do those River raids and that paralel universe/sleep or how it is called thing before that. I liked game in general.
Read: After Ghost of Tsushima for PS4, Rise of the Ronin will be this generations hallmark Assassin's Creed game. Got it.
@REALAIS Ubisoft PR, is that you?
I really hope that this game does away with a lot of the bloat that Valhalla had. I was ready for Valhalla to be over by about the 25-ish hour mark. Of course, it took me about 70 to reach the end credits....
Still not finished Valhalla. One day I may squeeze my teeth and finish it, but it is so bad... There is definitely no place in my life for another screwed AC game. ...I rather play thru AC 1 to AC Syndicate for a third time...
@Ravix in japan around war time, samurai, ninjas etc, they all highly belivednin God's and demon's, you best belive there will be more cult story 🤣🤣
Going to wait and see. AC in Japan still sounds interesting, but they may mess it up.
@Uromastryx oh, I don't mind them mixing in traditional local mythology, as the animus is always glitching out and using mythology as reality, plus the whole alien god arc in the main story, so that is fine, whatever.
I just mean in Origins there was no templars, as they were a later group, so the big bads were the cult of whatever, and then in odyssey it was still the order of ancients? And then in Valhalla, you guessed it some cult order of the ancients type thing. And then there was a prequel so it was the cultists again. But then because Aelfred existed, there was some storyline etc etc, but there is a gap between him and the templars that I don't belive has been covered yet?
So I'm just wondering if Japan will be a hard reset, like Origins was, or a return to a world that includes the templars, but I really hope it isn't some reborn cult order of the ancients again, as they were boring AF, that's all 😬😬😬
@PerpetualBoredom and you are Ubisoft hater for everything they do? I have played only Valhalla from any AC games. But you do you, and just tarnish every good comment about Ubisoft.
Oh, and I intend to buy this year Avatar game on great sale whenever it will drop. Add that to PR
I follow up games and not all games are great from Ubisoft, but they are huge company, they hit and they miss. This year they will try to hit heavy with Star Wars game and AC Japan.
I really liked Valhalla so happy bloody days.
I’ll buy it when on discount and space it out unlike Valhalla. I don’t think I’ll ever play one of these bloated AC games from start to finish again. So many of the collectibles were just unenjoyable- and I’m one who stupidly loves mindlessly collecting things. Quality over quantity is the best approach
One “arc”/chapter/region at a time is a lot more manageable. That being said, I can’t justify buying it at full price. I know other people who unfortunately share the same sentiment as I
@Jayslow word man, not sure how people enjoyed that ***** after the amazing scenery in odissey
Just hurry up and do Ancient Rome .
@Jayslow 100%. Valhalla sucked mainly because the setting was drab and boring to me. The equipment was mostly stupid looking, leathers and cloth and running around looking like you are wearing 10 fabric coats at the same time. This has potential to have badass weapons and armor and a great setting. I probably won't finish it, but will get a good 50 hours of fun in before I move to the next game and that's just fine to me. I'm hoping the main character is quick and nimble amd can flip over *****.
@Jaz007 i thought ninjas was about gore just as much as stealth. games like ninja gaiden, metal gear revengeance, the movie ninja assassin etc all made ninjas seem like very gory killers
Just when people wanted a Tenchu style AC game that's all and they just don't listen, thank god I have Ghosts of T to play soon once I've pulled my self away from the Ezio Trilogy I'm replaying again and Helldivers 2
I loved the 1st act, was a lot of fun. However by the time I got to England and spent 3 hours there, I was already a little burned out.
It's been long enough I'm ready for a new AC open world,
Best not to judge to early without any gameplay footage.
I am an AC fan, but Valhalla made me quit playing after about 3-4 hours.
The last Assassin's Creed game I played was Assassin's Creed 3 way back in 2014 (sorry for making anyone feel old with this comment).
Up until that game, I played every console game in the series, and I was disappointed with the third game (and also just burnt out on the series as a whole) that I have never shown any interest in any of the subsequent games.
I don't think this will change for me with the latest one on the horizon.
@REALAIS Enjoy!
@nomither6 Those aren’t stealthy ninjas, those are loud kill everything ninjas. AC should not have that kind of Ninja, but the quiet ninja, the one that blends in through social stealth. Blending in with the people and social stealth was a very common ninja tactic. This much gore takes the focus away form that. It shouldn’t gorie then Mirage or Unity.
@Jaz007 AC Japan intends to have 2 playable characters. One for Stealth and one for Open combat.
@Jaz007 i agree
