The immortal SEGA brawler Golden Axe is being resurrected as a comedic animated series, of all things. Ordered by Comedy Central and produced by CBS Studios in collaboration with Sony Pictures, the series will undoubtedly feature buxom men and women battling dragons and various beasts, and presumably, hilarity will ensue.
In a press release (thanks, PSLS), Comedy Central revealed the show's premise and the surprisingly incredible voice cast assembled for the task. Veteran warriors Gillius Thunderhead (Matthew Rhys, The Americans), Tyris Flare (Lisa Gilroy, Interior Chinatown), and Ax Battler (Liam McIntyre, Spartacus) are joined by rookie adventurer Hampton Squib (Danny Pudi, Community) on a quest to defeat the evil Chronos Lait (Carl Tart, Star Trek: The Lower Decks). Ten episodes have been ordered for starters, although no release window was forthcoming.
We haven't seen a new Golden Axe game since 2008's Golden Axe: Beast Rider on PS3, which was almost universally panned and with good reason. Intriguingly, Golden Axe is one of the franchises SEGA has promised to resurrect, but it's surprising to see the series get such a concerted push.

Golden Axe as a comedy? Not sure what to make of that. I’m still worried how the new game will turn out.
Skies of Arcadia would make a better anime then Golden Axe.
@XenonKnight That and Shining Force along with panzer Dragoon
There’s about 300 lbs of muscle and 2 inches of fabric on that box art. 🤣
I absolutely love Matthew Rhys. Perry Mason getting axed is a disgrace, basically the only thing I’ve enjoyed out of HBO in years.
No thanks. Not every game needs a movie or tv adaptation, and one franchise that certainly doesn't is Golden Axe
That box art just screams 80's movies. You will never see a box art like that again.
never heard of golden axe but it looks like an anti-wokers dream 😂😂
The animes they have paid for have been great and the animation super clean but I don't think Comedy Central wants an anime of this (or maybe they do with how popular anime is these days who knows lol)
@Martijn87 yep 👍🏻. I was around in the 80’s ( and the early 70’s for that matter, yes I’m old!) and every action adventure or fantasy film was exactly like that cover! Man it is so cringe now , but back then, yep that’s fine. Puts a smile on my face to look back at how things have changed over the years 😊
One look at that boxart and I can promise you that we will NOT get a faithful adaptation in Current Year.
This is pretty bizarre, but I'm low key excited. Animation is being done by Titmouse, the studio behind Vox Machina, which is also a comedic high fantasy action series. Since it'll be a comedy I can see the outfits being semi faithful.
@shonenjump86
Dungeons & dragons isn't technically a comedy yet alot of comedy has come out of it. Inc the legend of vox machina
So Sony is now making productions based on SEGA and Nintendo properties. What a weird timeline to show to a kid in the 90's.
This needs to be made in the style of an 80's cartoon! When I picture it I think of Dungeons & Dragons, He-Man or ThunderCats.
What a perfect opportunity to port revenge of death adder eh sega?
@LifeGirl you mean find pixelated people to play the parts? Because you could barely see anything of note when it came out.
@Nem
I wish.
@PSme I love the boxarts and filmposters of the 80's and 90's. Most were really pieces of art, the only downside was that not every epic cover represents how the game was...

Really? I don't watch Comedy Central animation but this doesn't sound good to me.
