Ever since the original tech demo in The Playroom VR, fans have been waiting for a full-blown Astro Bot adventure. Astro Bot Rescue Mission, the outstanding PSVR outing, checked the box – but due to its virtual reality requirements, many missed out on the excellent Team ASOBI outing. Now, after the tantalising Astro’s Playroom mini-campaign, a full-length adventure awaits.
And what an adventure the Japanese developer has in store: the PS Blog points out that there’ll be an absolutely astonishing 80 levels to explore, spread across six unique galaxies. Judging by the trailer, we’ll once again be meeting all kinds of PlayStation protagonists, including Nathan Drake from Uncharted and Kratos from God of War.
Mechanically, it looks like there’ll be tons to experiment with in this title, too. Nicolas Doucet, the French former Eye Pet creator and current Team ASOBI director, noted: “Astro can use over 15 new abilities offering unique play styles. Among the many new powers, you will find Barkster, the Bulldog Booster that lets you air-dash and smash through enemies, metal, and glass, the Twin-Frog Gloves that offer long-range punching and the ability to swing, and the Giant Sponge that lets you suck up water from the environment to grow huge and cause massive (and slightly moist) destruction.”
Frankly, it all sounds delightful. Make no mistake, with the developer’s platforming pedigree, this is going to be a strong contender for Game of the Year.

This looked a lot of fun.
I’m glad Sony managed to keep a (relative) lid on any leaks/announcement of a game until pretty close to its release. For me it’s a good way of doing it ( even if I’m still super happy wilds got an early trailer!)
No VR 2 support though, but will still buy it.
I’m incredibly excited for this! Astro’s Playroom is the only game from this franchise that I’ve played and it was enough to win me over completely. So creative, so beautiful, and charming … I can’t wait for the next instalment 👍👍👍
Hope people actually support the game and just don’t say they will…
The only thing I was overly fussed about from that presentation (possibly MH Wilds too). Looks like a great expansion of what made Astro’s Playroom so delightful on launch. Tbh, this game’s incorporation of dormant Sony IPs just made me hope that the next Ratchet and Clank totally dives into the Easter eggs that state that all Sony franchises exist within the same multiverse that the Dimensionator traverses. It’s one thing to have little Astro Bots that look like Nathan Drake but I think the technology’s there for them to genuinely mesh different game universes into one game, stick Ratchet in The Last of Us.
Highlight of this state of play, by far imho.
I wonder what price the game will be? £39.99 or £69.99?
This is a game i will support, even at full price. I know the quality i will be getting and the enjoyment i will have with it. Thats worth £70 all day long for me.
Seems like Sony is pushing Astrobot to be their next big Platformer mascot. I’m all for it 😎😎 Admittingly, I’m not breaking any “stage/level” records, but it’s still super fun regardless. 80 levels will surely keep players busy.
This is the highlight of the whole thing for me. Very pumped!
Never owning a PSVR I'd only seen screens and heard on Twitter about Astro and getting my PS5 I was absolutely blown away by Astros Playroom the demonstration of the Immersion of the Dualsense Haptics wowed me and my girlfriend and when we beat it she asked is there more of these....
Probably one of the most exciting pieces of gaming news this year! Can't wait! A beacon of light in a year of misery!
this will be the GOAT with FF7 Rebirth
Me and my 6 year old daughter still play the bundled in Astro Bot all these years later so beyond excited for a fully fledged game of it. I just showed her the trailer and her eyes lit up like it was Christmas morning. Will be a day one purchase
Completely Stellar. Sony let them cook for real.
Without VR support it will be a fraction of the game it could have been. Will still get it as it’ll likely be one of the best platformers ever made, but Sony absolutely should have made it a hybrid game. I’m glad non VR players will get to experience a small part of the Astro magic, but it’s a real shame for people who know how great this game could have been.
That’s a lot of levels to try and make interesting. Wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of those are shorter mini game style levels to inflate the number. Mario Wonder did something similar with the badge levels.
Looks fantastic great ending to the show imo.. showed some good games but Sony needs a showcase now. You think they waiting until after SGF???
80 levels are quite a lot for a platformer with small-mid budget.
Hopefully it will be at 40-50 bucks and sell well or at least pass 1 million copies like Sackboy.
With the PS5 originals all being based around parts of the PS5, i cant think 80 levels can do the same....
All sing along... " transistor 2... transistor 2.... i do it for you... because im transistor 2....!!"
This was easily my highlight of the showcase, I’m really excited for this.
Much as it pains me to say but I won't be buying this without VR2 support, I know I will be missing out but so be it.
Perhaps if it is ported to PC then I can play it in VR, with mods.
Sad but good to see VR2 supporting comments on the Blog, shame Sony don't read them.
80 levels may seem like a lot , but let’s see how short and easy they really are .
Rescue Mission is amazing. Hope they do a non-VR port of it so everyone can play it.
Not going to deny, I'm SO disappointed it's not on PSVR2. It looks great but would have been mind blowingly good in VR!
Will most certainly be a classic!
The game looks cool, But I am starting to feel like PS is gonna try and charge $50-$70 for this game....
It really is looking more like a $40 or less purchase for me.
Would be dope if it was on PS+
No, this is shi*. No VR support for what is essentially a VR game. Sony really can’t sell products. They have been selling PS5 as people were stuck at home due to the pandemic. Now they could not even sell a PS5 to a PS2 owner. Sony has become full of themselves worse than Apple. Plus, Astro Bot on PS5 was free. Sony really thinking this is the next Fortnite for some reason. Also, Concorde looked like a pile of dinosaur crap.
Truly the winner of the showcase for me, this game looked so good.
This just looks and sounds so fantastic!
Unbelievable that it won't have a vr2 version.
Sony have messed up here.
@hypnotoad Maybe they will add VR2 later with a patch like they did with GT 7. But for now, i think they want to promote Astro Bot as a game that any PS5 owners can get without spending $400 for a VR headset.
Yeah astro bot looks really good.its definitely gonna be excellent.word up son
Never thought I'd see the day a platformer became my most anticipated game of the year. I like the genre but I have finished few games in it. After finishing Astros Playroom though I said I would definitely buy another game if they made one and lo and behold! The only game that could trump this for me is if Metroid Prime 4 gets dated for this year.
The only game that appealed to me in the showcase.
Really looking forward to this
I actually get Super Mario Odyssey vibes from this! And if Astro can get within spitting distance of that holy grail it will indeed be an experience to savor.
I actually liked Sackboy A Big Adventure but it never came close to the best Mario outings. So far Astro gives me hope that Asobi can indeed recreate some of that Nintendo magic.
My standard fare consists of RPGs and soulslikes but I can never say no to an epic, cartoony, platformer adventure!
This game just looks like so much fun!
If I have any "complaint" is that all the boss battles look to be very similar to the T-Rex battle at the end of Atro's Playroom.
But, really, it's all about the levels when it comes to these kinds of games (even the best Mario games have the lamest boss battles except for the final battle with Bowser and Nintendo never ceases to amaze me in the originality department with its games).
I would have it pre-ordered it on Amazon, but couldn't find a listing, yet.
Absolutely pumped for this. My little boy just lost his fricken mind watching the trailer!
This looks brilliant, what a fabulous trailer. This is what video games should be all about....no micro transactions, no politics, just pure brilliant gameplay.
Having the mini game bundled with the console was a small stroke of genius, its something you just have to play. I might otherwise have not considered this but now I'm all in
Looks so good. Day 1 buy for me. A flying PS5 console. Will we see a PS2 or PS1 ship in the game?
Let's just hope 60 of the levels aren't just flying levels using the controller orientation to control it, like much of the presentation
@Luigia I reckon the lower
One of the few games I'm looking forward to. I still play the PS5 version, and have the PSVR (1) one also. Masterpieces both versions, this latest one will be epic!
I'm beyond excited for it, Astros playroom was perfection in every area in my opinion. This is also getting a physical release. I'm hoping it's close to a full price game, I want a Astros playroom experience on the level of something like Super Mario odyssey!
@PuppetMaster I really hope this is the case. Its a fair assessment you've made also. They need to recoup development costs etc so once they hit that hopefully they re-visit it and give us a VR version. I will be purchasing the flat version regardless though. Deserves our support.
