None of us are truly happy, not really, but it seems Helldivers 2 players are even less so, judging by the predictably volatile response to balancing changes introduced as part of the anticipated Escalation of Freedom update. Nerfs to flamethrowers ahead of the release of the fire-focused Freedom's Flame warbond served as the spark, and players have again returned to review bombing the game.
The fuss was enough to prompt a response from Shams Jorjani, Arrowhead's new CEO. The developer appeared quite blindsided by the response from the famously passionate community, a vocal portion of which is either out of patience or becoming very nearly so.
Fans of flamethrowers in particular (like this humble scribe) have had a bumpy ride, with the weapon considered underpowered at launch, becoming ludicrously dangerous to allies and a bit better for a while there before apparently now becoming bad again. It's a sorry state of affairs, especially with Freedom's Flame now available, so hopefully, Arrowhead gets things together in a reasonably short amount of time.
Did you dive into some Helldivers 2 over the weekend? Where are you at on the current state of the game? Start a small, controlled flame in the comments section below.

I don't understand.....
Why other live service titles did not get hate for nerf or buff? Or do they?
@anon_pel222 they do but this one belongs to Sony so here we are lol.
Tbh I haven't played in a while so they may be right but hey they can review bomb all they want all I see is the game selling a lot again without a price cut, at this point they are just buying their right to complain LOL
This game specifically advertised that you can play with OVERPOWERED WEAPONS and yet Arrowhead keeps nerfing them over and over again. It is getting exhausting as none of the guns feel that fun to use anymore.
@GymratAmarillo I mean it's not even "review bombing" at this point it's just people giving their opinions that the game is becoming less and less fun.
Might be an unpopular opinion, but Arrowhead should cool it with this machine gun volley of balance patch after balance patch, each wildly shifting the meta game and sending players searching for a new loadout each time.
It's a PvE game, it doesn't need perfect balance. It needs to be fun. PvP, yeah I get that needs constant balancing. This is strictly PvE.
Signed, someone who ditched the game after they nerfed virtually every piece of equipment I used at one point or another. Went from being able to do level 9 difficulty down to lvl 6 overnight. Forced myself to relearn the game to a degree. Then it happened again. Then again. Wasn't fun for me.
If I worked at Arrowhead I would be feeling like I can do nothing right. Hard creating a game for a fan base that will erupt like children if you tweak damage numbers 🤦♂️
I purchased the Warbonds, spent a lot of time with the game, and for the most part enjoyed the chaos. This constant "balancing" in a PvE title is frustrating and unnecessary Arrowhead seems intent on making every primary unviable and sucking all fun out of the game.
I get they want to avoid a Meta by making every gun terrible to use to sell the fantasy of being overwhelmed and fighting a war of impossible odds etc. but fundamentally the game should be fun to play.
The player count has dropped 90% already. Arrowhead is a small team and lacks the resources to keep up with other live services so perhaps they should primarily focus on additional content rather than constant patches intent on improving the "balance" of the game.
Would probably help arrowhead out if outlets didn’t write articles on a few negative comments.
It just puts it in a spiral.
Don’t play these type of games. All I know is my wife stopped playing because it became more frustrating than fun. I really don’t understand how the devs can’t get that being able to kill stuff in a timely manner is more fun, and will keep more people engaged long term, than will nerfing weapons to eek a few more minutes out of each encounter.
Nerfhead Studios will just not give up on making their PvE game a chore and not fun.
It is evident that their initial success with making HD2 so much fun was accidental.
For those in the comments who have not been with the game since day1, it is not about people being crybabies, it is about Nerfhead Studios unnecessarily making main weapons feel like useless pieces of junk.
With that and with constantly changing how the game plays instead on focusing on delivering new content (story and gameplay wise), Nerfhead Studios have manages to alienate 90% of their player base, which is an achievement rarely seen. Slow clap.
I don't really care about the balancing (I'll continue to use what feels good regardless of whether it actually is good) but the Impaler is just awful to play against. I'm at the point where I'm not playing bugs again until they've done something about that.
@SeanOhOgain Do consumers have no right to complain? Just buy the product and accept it? I’ll never understand this. They bought the game, they can comment or review it poorly. I don’t understand how you want them to get the devs’ attention, particularly as reviews have proved to be the very best way to get a reaction from a dev. Sending a feedback form or @-ing them on Twitter doesn’t cut it. What exactly should people with a legitimate criticism do?
@ShadowofSparta Obviously it's hard when there's a crowd mentality to maintain chill, but I think folks just need more empathy and patience. The Devs are obviously working their butts off and trying their best to make the best game possible.
I've worked in dev, there's never enough hours in the day and everyone is trying to do their best
And actually, from my experience the Devs see just about everything put online.
This game is excellent, or it was for sure. The constant nerfs just didn't make sense, it is a game that is advertised as being overpowered and it is PvE so there should be no issue if players want to blitz missions efficiently I just really do not understand why they want to take the fun out of it! Such a shame, with the exception of the Orbital Rail strike most peoples load outs were pretty varied and not 4 people with the same gear every time so why bother, everyone was having fun.
Quite like the title Nerfhead studios though!
@anon_pel222 Some do, ESO being a classic case in point - there were some nerfs and buffs a few years ago which included Wood Elves going from being excellent at thievery and sneaking to wandering around in a fluorescent jacket and honking clown shoes overnight, ruining some player characters forever, all due to some whinging sorcerers being taken out by bow wielding Bosmer.
Hopefully Arrowhead will eventually leave well alone but such is the pain of any live service game where the rules and balance (or lack of) can be altered at the studio's whim.
All I read about is how the community is toxic, yet every time I play the game I am matched up with people that just get on with the mission, don't give a monkeys what you're diving in with or what's meta, communicate (even if just using pings), and work together to extract with the samples.
I think the opinions of a few vocal people are being blown out of all proportion, personally.
And don't necessarily look at the number of concurrent players for an idea of how popular the game is. Daily active users may have become weekly or monthly active users. How many people are playing at any one time is potentially misleading. And I bet Arrowhead and Sony are delighted with the number of players the game has retained. If you'd asked them on the eve of launch how many units they hoped to sell and how big they expected the player base to end up, I'd wager that it's a hell of a lot smaller than where the game has landed.
Jesus I’m so tired of being a part of gaming because of ***** like this. It’s just constant negativity or whining from what are supposed to be adults about the dumbest crap it’s just so tiring and old. Ok they nerfed a weapon big deal they’ll go back and fix it but there’s no need to review bomb the freaking game over something this minor. I just would love to see the day when gaming actually grows up and matured before I die but sadly I don’t think that’s going to happen
I had to look up what the nerf to flamethrowers actually was... and it's just that it isn't overpowered against Chargers anymore, really? One enemy type is enough for people to whinge that much?
Please, stop reporting on the Helldivers reddit, discord, etc, they do not even remotely represent the playerbase at large.
Pack of babies throwing their toys out of the cot again
@anon_pel222 benadryl it's a Sony product mostly. Sony ain't perfect, but will receive more hate than others because.... reasons.
@anon_pel222
They do, but there are two things that makes this stand out:
1 - Its a Sony product
2 - Its a PvE game, nerfs shouldn't be a thing.
In a PvE game you usually don't need nerfs, you need to buff the other alternatives in order to make them attractive, or better, you tweak the enemies and make them more vulnerable or less vulnerable to certain types of damage.
I'm more annoyed that most of not all the new stuff from the update is reserved for the high difficulties. And yeah they need to stop nerfing everything, I've pretty much had the same load out for months now because I don't feel compelled to use anything else.
They also need to start progressing the war story because it's just been Bugs and Bots from the start, I had hoped we would get Fortnite style in game events that shakes things up aside from the black hole one it's been largely nothing.
The most frustrating part of this for me is that I thought they mostly nailed the difficulty balancing at launch. There were definitely some overpowered weapons, but that shouldn't have mattered with it being PvE and all. Arrowhead struck a really good balance between manageable and outright chaos on higher difficulties. It was FUN. But, ever since the first balance patch that nerfed a bunch of weapons I enjoyed and screwed up the enemy spawning, the game has slowly gotten less and less fun for me over time. The final straw for me was seeing Arrowhead nerf how fire damage works to be more "realistic" before dropping a battle pass centered around FIRE DAMAGE. Like, seriously?
I play one match of this game and go straight back to skyrim, all they have done is make the game harder with no real benefits, can't even get new stuff because of how grindy the game is either but I'm sure the fanboy shills will continue to defend microtransactions in a game that isn't free to play.
I enjoy this game and doing a few missions with friends now and then however I detest these nerfs. As many mentioned prior, this is PvE so it should be fun to work together and use weapons based on missions and which teammate is using what. All these changes just hinder that fun factor. I get upset that when I finally unlock a new warbond and try/enjoy a new weapon, it's nerfed right after. Just let us enjoy the weapon content as is when it's launched.
@anon_pel222 helldivers players are toxic that is why
I don't understand why people cannot just enjoy themselves. The game is gun. No longer being able to melt a charger with the flamethrower has not made me want to rage against the game. I'm still having fun. I think it's just the people who want to be overpowered instead of having some semblance of skill that are having issues.
The biggest issue wasn't the nerf to the flamethrower or Incind Breaker, it was the fact they didn't buff any of the starter weapons to give the chance to have different laadouts, they literally nerfed the above and that was it pretty much. Because of this it shows that AH did a Bungie and basically say to the players "We don't like you using thay weapon, use something else" but there isn't anything else to stay the same level of damage sort of.
And then add the new Impaler Termid which has a stupid reach with it's burrowed tenticles, it had a serious bug that it slingshots you into the air out of the maps barrier in the sky or so far away to the other side.
Then the spawn rate is still over the top even more so now where it adds a crap load of Behemoths Chargers, Chargers, Impalers, Bile Titans.
Rocket Devs, Walkers and that stupid stuff but also they nerfed the flamethrower just before the new Fire Warbond as well. This again happened before they nerf the weapons to every Warbond just after in this case fire damage before fire Warbond.
My biggest peeve is the fact they didn't fix any of the PC performance issues at all hardly no fixes. It sometimes runs like crap could be playing 2 missions and the 3rd boom FPS drops for no reason at all
Oh look an over entitled group of terminally online "fans" are holding the game hostage again. Nothing will ever be good enough will it?
They've ruined it, the game and fun I had from when it was released have all but evaporated now
Three months ago I'd easily recommend the game but now there's no chance I could
Seems they're deliberately trying to annoy and piss off as many of the player base as is possible
@Nepp67 Never seen such a garbage community don't worry if you go far enough the game will be gone. I'm would not be surprised if Arrowhead does not want to touch this game again with a community like this. Review bombing is the worst way to help a developer out but then again gamers are the worst and most entitled.
@Nakatomi_Uk I still believe review bombing won't make it better it's a stupid way to try to fix something.
This game is like the polar opposite of No Man's Sky, where the developers release a game which is almost universally loved at first and then release update after update which gradually erodes player goodwill over time.
@Flaming_Kaiser Call it what you like bud, people aren't finding the game fun anymore and they're writing their opinion in steam reviews to express that. What, do you want them to shut up and keep playing the game despite it not being as fun as it was before?
@Nepp67 Review bombing is kinda sad but you believe what you want. People review bomb games for the most stupid reasonsand this "fanbase" is exhausting...
I think they really are putting off people who want to try it. But if you believe thats good then that's good for you.
I'm happy they didn't put in a strong woman or something with a rainbow we seen what happens with the Last of Us 2. Sending death threats to a voice actress or the developers.
Ah gamers are really reasonable people especially the hardcore fanbase.
