Machine Games' upcoming treasure-hunting adventure, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, will differ from contemporaries like Tomb Raider and Uncharted in more ways than one; guns are described as being more of a "fallback solution", as opposed to being Nathan Drake's primary verb.
Speaking to Edge magazine (thanks, GamesRadar+), creative director Axel Torvenius says that guns will be taking a backseat to Indy's other assets: "We do not encourage gunplay. It's not being pushed as the primary way forward. The primary way forward is always trying to use your wits and your whip... Indy doesn't have superpowers. He's a teacher and a somewhat clumsy archaeologist. He happens to have this passion that puts him in these weird situations constantly with enemies and traps."
This must be an interesting change of pace for the developer and diametrically opposed to its excellent Wolfenstein games. Still, it's not like there won't be guns at all: "We have a game where plenty of guns are in there, but you choose not to use them because it's too loud and dangerous. You can pick up a gun and switch it to use as a melee weapon. That's a very in-character use of a gun for Indiana Jones."
Are guns simply tools of lesser adventurers? Is Indy's iconic bullwhip the more impressive weapon, anyway? Whip it real good in the comments section below.

It would be odd to have Indi dual wielding rocket launchers like BJ in Wolfenstein so i understand the choice
From what I’ve seen (and this article adds to that) the devs are really trying to stay true to the character from the movies. If they nail it, I’m sure the game will succeed and sit as a reminder that authentic fan service can trump altering a well known title for modern audiences.
Indiana Jones seems to be a difficult IP to transform into a successful game. I played Fate of Atlantis a handful of years ago and loved it, but apart from that one I've not played a game that captures that "Indy" feeling.
That he won't be a shooting everything he sees is for sure a good sign. 😋 Hope they end up with a good game.
I'm not against stealth but I mean like Star Wars while Indy wasn't about guns as Star Wars is. Some audiences want to use guns, not always stealth, or traps for enemies to walk into or whatever.
Guns or whip for not hitting enemies but doing other things or what they don't get about audiences that play a shooter for a reason or do guns blazing. Or creative in world solutions of designers and programmers offer them in the level design.
The whip should be used in many ways. To traverse gaps, hit enemies, use with items to distract or throw the items. The hat too to throw guards off. Why do no Devs think outside the box anymore? It boggles the mind.
Maybe the whip, maybe disguises in Indy I hope but not even Star Wars had Storm trooper disguises as an option, literally in a new hope that's a thing.
Some minds think what situations can happen, others whatever other factors for gameplay/worlds and we end up with not understanding audiences, has to be perfect design and basic options to play games and they end up empty feeling then fun to use abilities or weapons then being boring characters to play as or listen to talk. If quick thinking characters why can't they do it in game. Why are the level designers and programmers aable to make level design more interesting.
That's nothing but good news. Ever since they were Starbreeze, Machinegames have had wonky shooting.
@LikelySatan
HARD disagree. Their Wolfenstein games especially New Order/Old Blood had phenomenal gunplay.
@PegasusActual93 meh. I respect that the combat was pretty close up the majority of the time, but it all just moved so slow. It felt like the shooting in an immersive sim. TNO was their best gunplay though.
As long as you can punch Nazis I’m sold.
I just hope it's better than what I've seen.
The gun play and whip animations looked poor.
The best parts of the game which felt indy was the 3rd person sections.
I think that can only be good news. It doesn't need to be another Uncharted with loads of action.
I love the franchise but 1st person is really putting me off buying this day 1.
Guns should only be used against fancy wielding swordsmen.
@LN78
I understand Indy needs to be its own thing rather than an Uncharted/Tomb Raider copy with a different skin but from what I’ve seen it just doesn’t look right to me personally. I will play it as I’ve said I love the franchise but just not 100% sold on it.
I really can't get excited for this one, just like Veilguard, the more I see the less I want to play it.
Indy wasn't "clumsy".
@ApostateMage a swordsman comes up to me wielding his fancy, I'd shoot him too!
@LuXifer seems to be difficult to make a decent Indy film too. The last one was absolute nonsense. Made Indy into a gormless, helpless old man, killed his son offscreen, and installed a completely unlikeable and insufferable Helena as Indy. Awful film.
@The_Elder What they mean is how he has this sloppy way of doing things where he scrappily kinda bumbles his way through things a lot. He's brave and has good instincts but he's not exactly John Wick. He always makes mistakes (e.g. the incredibly iconic boulder scene is him screwing up) but gets through in the end.
Another example:

I've got no problem with that.
I love all Uncharted games, it's an epic IP. But they always had more gunfights than actual treasure finding / puzzle solving / exploration.
So this will be a nice change, and in line with Indy's style.
I just hope the game will be good overall and doesn't promise a ton just to end up being disappointing, like Starfield was...
I cannot wait for this game. PC Game Pass day 1 then buy on PS5 Day 30? If it’s good.
Kinda funny because one of the most iconic scenes in Indy and films in general is Indy using a gun to solve a problem.
Sounds promissing and interesting. Also, differentiates them apart. Good approach...lets see the implementation of it, but I am possitive.
@Matroska the scene you linked - the fire is caused by Henry Jones Senior being clumsy. The boulder scene happens after he escapes a set off set of traps - there's no longer time to be careful. But before that, when they enter the temple, he's being attentive, careful and saves a clumsy hired guy by keeping him out of the light not to trigger traps. Bottom line is - it's the company he keeps who are usually clumsy and he's the opposite.
And please, don't compare Raiders of the Lost Ark or The Last crusade (both 10/10) to a dogcrap like John Wick.
@LN78 having her as the new Indy was definelty the plan, I'd say. But they made her so unlikeable I'm not surprised it did badly with test screenings. I felt they killed Indy's son just so there was no opportunity for him to follow in his dad's footsteps and pave the way for Helena. That may or may not be the case (I think it is) but what is for sure is that they turned Indy into a sad, useless shadow of his former self to emphasis Helena, and like Han Solo, he didn't deserve that.
And yes, Crystal Skull was plain awful.
@LN78 well yeah 😄 I meant the character. It's not like it had to be played by SLB.
@LN78 phew! Thank goodness we were spared a good film like that to make way for a vehicle to introduce Helena. That other idea sounded like a proper Indy adventure 😄
I find guns to be very unhelpful when I fall back
What's their position on snakes?
I figure that out.its definitely a different video games than tomb raider and uncharted.word up son
@LN78 agreed. Raiders is a film for all to enjoy, with a charismatic lead who appeals to the everyman.
Frankly, I find it a bit ridiculous the devs have to explain that Indy isn't a gun-totting nutter, but such is the way of things these days everything has to be spelt out.
@riceNpea I hate that film and all it's time travelling nonsense, the last crusade was the final indy film in my head , the rest are sealed away in a government warehouse.
@LN78 let me guess, she puts on his hat and the audience burned the theatre down.
@Shalooda is it too much to ask that she gets her own hat!! 😄👍
@riceNpea
Yeah, I agree. He's a complex character that the world fell in love with over the span of the original trilogy. Any and all changes to his personality/character are easy to spot.
Crystal Skull was far from good, but at least it felt like a bad Indy movie. Dial of Destiny was, IMO, just a fanfic written by a "special" person. 😅
I just hope this teams writers aren't the same as Wolfenstein-Youngblood...oof.
@LuXifer pretty much. Turning into a broken down old man was terrible. It was like Joe Biden played Indy!
As long as in game Indy gives the exasperated look he gave the sword wielding man in Raiders every time he has to shoot…….. 😃
Then they should improve the whip combat because it looks terrible.
@riceNpea as long as long as that hat was a jesters hat with bells, and she was forced to wear it for a whole movie, and said ringa dingaling whenever she saw a bad guy, then yes
Read something about back saying it's abit like riddick game guessjng that's what it could be like wasn't much guns or at least wasn't what can remember playing 😂 if it is should be great 😎
@Shalooda now that's a film I'd watch Helena in!
Looking forward to some Whipping only speed runs.
I hope so. He’s Indiana Jones, not Nathan Drake!
