Machine Games' upcoming treasure-hunting adventure, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, will differ from contemporaries like Tomb Raider and Uncharted in more ways than one; guns are described as being more of a "fallback solution", as opposed to being Nathan Drake's primary verb.
Speaking to Edge magazine (thanks, GamesRadar+), creative director Axel Torvenius says that guns will be taking a backseat to Indy's other assets: "We do not encourage gunplay. It's not being pushed as the primary way forward. The primary way forward is always trying to use your wits and your whip... Indy doesn't have superpowers. He's a teacher and a somewhat clumsy archaeologist. He happens to have this passion that puts him in these weird situations constantly with enemies and traps."
This must be an interesting change of pace for the developer and diametrically opposed to its excellent Wolfenstein games. Still, it's not like there won't be guns at all: "We have a game where plenty of guns are in there, but you choose not to use them because it's too loud and dangerous. You can pick up a gun and switch it to use as a melee weapon. That's a very in-character use of a gun for Indiana Jones."
