![The Last of Us Part 1 and 2 Will Both Look and Perform Better than Ever on PS5 Pro 1](https://images.pushsquare.com/00ffd1825746d/the-last-of-us-part-1-and-2-will-both-look-and-perform-better-than-ever-on-ps5-pro-1.900x.jpg)
As with most of Sony's first-party teams, Naughty Dog is planning to take full advantage of the upcoming PS5 Pro to offer even better versions of their current-gen titles. Over on the PS Blog, the studio's lead programmer, Vincent Marxen, explains how its two The Last of Us games will benefit from the boost in power.
"We here at Naughty Dog are proud to offer PS5 Pro updates for both The Last of Us Part I and The Last of Us Part II Remastered, ensuring PS5 Pro players have the most optimized experience for both entries," he writes. "Each game will offer a new PS5 Pro-specific enhanced rendering mode that takes advantage of improved graphics processing, rendering 1440p, then upscaling to 4K via PSSR super resolution. This mode maintains the 60 fps target, offering an ideal balance of framerate and resolution."
In a nutshell, then, the two games will have their performance and graphics modes combined on PS5 Pro; you'll get to play at an upscaled 4K resolution thanks to PSSR, and they'll target 60 frames-per-second at the same time.
"Performance and Fidelity rendering modes are still available on PS5 Pro and will provide an even smoother experience than players would see on an original PS5, as well as a higher framerate if your display supports it," Marxen continues. "Whether it will be your first time experiencing these stories, or a chance to jump in again, we hope all fans of The Last of Us enjoy experiencing this amazing way to play."
Obviously, Naughty Dog has historically been a perfectionist studio, putting out incredibly detailed, gorgeously presented games. It's no surprise to see the team taking the time to add in support for PS5 Pro, then, where their titles will be able to shine the brightest.
It's The Last of Us Day today, and that means we've had some other exciting news for series fans. The Last of Us Part I is now part of PS Plus Extra's game catalogue, and HBO has just revealed the first trailer for Season 2 of the show.

The thing that puzzles me is that tlou 2 remastered at least already renders at 1440p internally and then upscales to a resolved 4k image. Is PSSR supposed to be the magic bullet to a problem that doesn’t really exist?
@RiceC03 I guess they just do this to learn/experiment how to push Last Of Us Part III to the limit in the future. Or the other I.P they are working on.
Will PS5 Pro change the story of TLoU2 so I don't hate it as much as I love the first?
So glad we’re being fed PS3 era games for the second half of the PS5’s life.
Super excited to be left in the dust with performance promised on the current gen system only to have it behind another $800 paywall (PS5 Pro + Disc Drive).
Who’s really that fussed about replaying these games again? Anyone that was itching to do so would have just played them when the remake of 1 and the remaster of 2 came out.
Newsflash: Better hardware runs games better.
...ok ok, they might have some specific patches to take better advantage of said hardware. But still. 😋
Even if it was supposed to be on the PS5 it's nice to have proper 4K/60 finally
This reminds me of Skyrim. Legendary edition...or was that the special edition?... maybe it was the anniversary edition... of course, as good as tlou is, it's no Skyrim
How very boring, I remember when awesome new games would get dropped with the new hardware - hardware pushers. The awesome new games made you want to buy the new hardware. Where is the awesome new games?
They sure make it sound like the PS5 Pro is a good machine… but at the same time I can’t justify it not having a disc drive.
Verge said that the Last of Us Part 2 looked less sharp in the PSSR mode than the PS5 4K30.
Can't wait for all the ps6 versions of all these PS4 games
@nessisonett I’m planning on playing both of them again the year that Part III releases (if & when it releases).
Isn't that a given?
can we just get over the last of us and Horizon? Playstation has more franchises!
@StylesT literally cannot wait!
@Loamy ahh I understand. Does always seem to be granular detail (hair, grass etc.) that suffers in upscaling techniques like this tbf
I’m only really left to wonder what improvements might translate to the portal if any. Shouldn’t be even considering a pro until further knowledge any which way
Anyone member when Naughty Dog used to release new games throughout a console generation?
I member.
That's cool and all but it feels like Last of Us 1 and 2 are all we've been hearing from Naughty Dog for the last 4 years. We're hungry for something different from ND.
I guess base PS5 has been holding back the Pro all this time. 🙄
It’s just to get us prepared for last of us part 1 remake remastered.
What I find funny is that these are games that are supposed to be extremely dark, depressing and about survival and hardship, so I think wanting to be as pretty as humanly possible is a funny priority to have. Not a wrong one just funny.
@Ralizah here’s a better one; I have to be reminded they’re making games at all. And I wish that was sarcasm.
@StylesT game of the year 2030: ps6 remake of last of us 2
It’s a real PSSR that it’s an update and we won’t be able to buy a re-re-re-master!
I’ll get my coat.
@colonelkilgore emphasis on if 🫣
It’s nice that they’re leaving all the ips from ps1 and ps2 era to rot where they belong. That would be such a waste of money.
@Yousef- It does feel like they've just been out of commission for most of the generation now. And if you're like me and don't enjoy TLOU, it's been even longer!
They've never been my favorite developer, but how'd we go from four new games on PS3 and three new games on the PS4 to zero new games on PS5?
... how is this news?
@Yousef- So true - it's truly a funny priority. I think it would be more fitting for a series like Uncharted.
@Ralizah I'm sure there are loads of reasons, but I think it comes down to the astronomical cost of a photorealistic game. I think it's kind of insane how Sony wants people to buy a $850 console to play games they release maybe once every year, and 5-8 years per development studio. It's a financial model that is just aching to implode on itself.
@LuXifer glances at Bloodborne
If only better hardware ran games better…
@RiceC03 native 4k max settings at 60fps will be only achievable on ps5pro and will look much better than any upscaling
@dskatter Oof, now I'm sad. One day man, one day. 😢
@B_Lindz For sure. The costs of AAA development are astronomical in general now (especially factoring in the time that need to be invested in them), and when you consider a developer that has pushed technical boundaries since the PS3 era? And how Sony kind of trapped itself by cultivating an audience the last two gens that have come to expect expensive blockbusters out of them and seem uninterested in most of their AA software?
I foresee heavy utilization of AI in the future of many Sony studios.
@LuXifer I dearly hope so! It’s incomprehensible that they’ve let it languish this long.
Better scaler = better finished result. Surprising no one but PS customers apparently.
@StylesT Why buy a PS5 to play PS5 games when you need a PS7 to play PS5 games properly? PS5's are ok for PS4 games but you really need a PS5 Pro to see PS4 games they way they were meant to be seen.
Both on console and PC at this point I think the best way to experience gaming is to buy games at least 5 years old or more, play them on current hardware, enjoy them at their best, then in 5+ years when the currently releasing games are half price, fully patched and stable, and run properly on the hardware you have at the time, that's when you buy those. GoY will be properly playable circa 2031.
@Deadlyblack 4 years?? They did do uncharted 4 and the Chloe standalone expansion, but that exception aside it's the only thing we've heard from them since 2012!
@Ralizah I really don't know how Sony and other AAA's are going to manage. It's clear they spend more per game than they can realistically make back unless they hit a lucky strike. They spent all their time building games they wanted to make to push tech that they didn't bother looking at the market itself and realizing there's insufficient demand for that product, nor the cost it bears. "AAA" just doesn't work. It never really did. It only works if they're exceptionally rare, rather than the norm, and even then it only works if they're so incredibly generic that it "appeals to everyone" and becomes just snack food.
A combined amount of over a 'k' if you bought both versions of the console and the latest rendition is still only capable of chasing the 4K/60 pipe dream using upscaling. Anybody who buys this piece of junk is a mug.
The base PS5 should have been the Pro's specs so they could deliver on what people expected a new console to actually achieve. The PS5 is like a PS4 pro+ and then this mid gen upgrade for the £700 could have been nearing a really good PC spec. Not extremely close considering the price of the graphics cards of course but something beefier.
Part of the PS4 pro being a useful upgrade for those that wanted it was the price alongside dropping the cost of the base model, the bigger internal storage and the QUIETNESS because my god did the poor old PS4 pop off on certain games.
They are reaaaaaaaaly trying to convince us to purchase PS5 Pro. It's freaking hilarious at this point and I'm having a great time lol
Really milking these two games. Naughty Dog hasn't even released a new game this generation, its so sad.
@Stnkygrngo how do y’all get mad at “PS3 era games” while simultaneously griping and moaning for backwards compatibility to play those games in their inferior form? Also, this isn’t just some PS3-era games. It’s a cultural phenomenon!
And once these are done, Naughty Dog will be working on TLOU Part 1 and 2 remastered for PS6, each at the price of a full game.
Sony:- We have an exhaustive list in our gaming library catalogues, most being remastered old games and cheap $5-10 indie games made by someone in their basement or a university assignment.
Unfortunately this is what happens when digital becomes mass.
@nessisonett It's me- I'm gonna replay them again for the second time this year in November on the pro. 500+ hours across the many versions of these two games...
I dream of the day where Sony put down TLOU franchise. Yes, I'm maybe alone who don't care these games, but that humbuck around it start to be embarrassing.
Sony really is desperately trying to get every last drop of blood out of the last of us games 😅
I'm really baffled why people are so negative towards free updates op a game. But then again every time there is a new group of complainers coming to the site.
Games I demolished 100 times already. Is this how the market should look?
@8bitOG you are right… The Last of Us is vastly superior to Skyrim
@Ultima893 to be fair, my Skyrim has 2k + mods and is not the same game one can play on their Playstation
@riceNpea If the PS5 Pro could rewrite that horrendous story, I’d buy it in a heartbeat.
No higher resolution textures? pfff
@Stickleman trying to get every last drop of blood out of the last of us games.
Llike cordyceps it's infectious, apparently has health benefits too?
