While the PS2 was host to some of the best games ever made, its popularity also ensured it got its fair share of bargain bin fodder too. Sometimes uncovering those gems was part of the platform’s charm, and Double Dragon Revive for PS5 and PS4 gives us a similar kind of vibe.
Developed by veteran WWE maker Yuke’s, two new playable characters have been added to the release’s roster, joining the obligatory Billy and Jimmy. First up is Marian, the former damsel in distress turned destroyer here.
“An intelligent woman capable of keeping up her positive attitude no matter how tough the situation,” the press release reads. “She lives in the slums with the Lee brothers, operating a bar adjacent to the dojo her father left behind. She herself also wields the Sosetsuken techniques, specializing in sharp and relentless attacks.”
She’ll be joined by Yagyu Ranzo, a “descendant of the Yagyu family, protectors of the Dragon Vein, source of the Sosetsuken’s power”. The press release explains: “Thanks to harsh training from a young age, he has mastered ninjutsu passed down through generations.”
The game’s due out in 2025, although there’s no specific date yet. It looks janky in all the right ways, though – are you game for some retro belt-scrolling action?

This looks twice as good as the Pokemon game and about half as good as the Pokemon Pinball game
Waiting for "Enhanced for PS5 Pro" confirmation
Not to hate on the game or anything, but it does look generic if compared to Double Dragon Gaiden.
The artstyle looks nice but graphic looks low budget. ArcSys probably gave Yuke's pretty tight budget but at least it's not 8 bit NES graphic like DD 4. But again, gameplay looks solid fun beat em up with tons of combos and super moves.
I might get this game since i'm a big fans of beat em up genre and Double Dragon.
@CielloArc Gaiden is the only DD game I actually like! Me and my wife have played a lot of side scrolling beat em ups so we're cautiously interested in this new one.
I am not liking the visual style of this one. It just does not scream "Double Dragon" to me at all.
To me, Double Dragon always seems to be a series that doesn’t know what it wants to be. The series has always been a hit or miss with me. This one is looking like a miss.
@shonenjump86 "Double Dragon always seems to be a series that doesn’t know what it wants to be"
Most Double Dragon games are beat em up with only two fighting games based on the animated tv series and '94 live action movie. I say the series clearly knows what it wants to be.
The biggest different is the artstyle. Since Technos got bankrupt in 1996, Double Dragon IP was shared around to multiple developers & artist. Hence why some games looks quite different compare to the og Double Dragon 1-3 for arcade / NES.
Ah childhood memories with this series!
I'm intrigued.
Will keep an eye on this one, I’m up for some brawling business!
So now it is Quadruple Dragon or they don't understand meaning of Double Dragon title?
@PuppetMaster well aware of the whole Technos going under and DD shifting to other publishers and is now currently with Arc Systems. It’s just the beat em up style is always different. With that awful remake of 2, Neon(I liked this one), DD4, Gaiden, and now this 3D game. Feels like their trying to find a DD game that can stick.
My favorite 'modern' DD game is still Neon. This one does have a PS2-era flair to it, hopefully it's fun to play, I wasn't the biggest fan of more recent entries in the series.
@djlard Most of the DD games have more playable characters than just the brothers.
@AfroMario What's "the Pokémon game"?
As much as I love Double Dragon. I can honestly say that this is not the Double Dragon I love! I hope there's a demo for this. Because if not, I will never give this game a chance lol.
@shonenjump86 Well different studios means different ideas. And it's not like they can reused the same beat em up like the og arcade or NES which has been done many times. ArcSys tried with Double Dragon 4 and it's just not good.
I even say different beat em up style makes Double Dragon quite fresh. But at least they still beat em up and not RPG or soulslike.
