Capcom's dropped a new update for Dragon's Dogma 2. While it does fix a handful of weird issues in the here and now, its main purposes is to prepare the game for PS5 Pro, which obviously launches next week.
As the patch notes detail, two new options are being added to the graphics menu. PS5 Pro users will be able to toggle PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution — or PSSR as it's come to be known — from there, increasing image quality through Sony's new AI-driven tech.
Those who shell out for the especially expensive system will also be able to select a new 'Balanced' setting, which we assume will boost the game's resolution without tanking the frame rate. The best of both worlds, etc.
For the record, Capcom's managed to improve Dragon's Dogma 2 quite dramatically since its release back in March. However, the frame rate still has a tendency to dip when the screen gets busy, and the resolution can be hit and miss depending on the graphics mode you're using.
The PS5 Pro should make the whole thing run smoother than ever — but unless it's bordering on a transformative change, we can see people bemoaning the fact that they need to pay £700 just to hit a smooth 60 frames-per-second. There are some interesting conversations on the horizon...

£699 well spent, bring on the 7th!
I haven’t played this game yet. Perhaps the PS5 Pro version will be a good time to try it out.
Glad Pro-Bros is getting some value for their $$$. Personally I'm waiting for the complete edition to be released and then have a nice sale...so probably around the release of PS6. 😁
Wondering what they're cooking with regards to DLC content. Capcom do be loving smaller DLC releases, but hope they've got something bigger in the pipeline aswell.
Will replay this despite having the plat to see the pro patch features, plus i've not tried NG+ yet
It seems that some people here, after the initial obligatory outrage at PS5 Pro's price and snarky remarks, managed a smooth about-face and are now the new console's vocal proponents. Opinions change and that's good.
Either way, I'm glad everyone's happy: haters for still being able to hate on the price, and the rest of us for getting the best PlayStation experience.
@8bit4Life It's my personal GOTY; definitely give it a try. And if you're getting a Pro then it's going to look/feel incredible (finally haha).
I'll load it up to see how it differs between launch and Pro. Wont replay until we get an expansion.
@extragood As with all things gaming related, be it publishers, developers or console manufacturers. They're never more then one must-have title away from being beloved/forgiven/whatever.
As of this exact moment I don't see the value of the Pro. But the MOMENT a game I really really want shows improvements I care about then I'll for sure get it. And I think I'm not alone in that sentiment.
Personally I love it when the comment section gets snarky and spicy. But in the end it's all about enjoying our games, and luckily no amount of online discord can take that away from us.
"For the record, Capcom's managed to improve Dragon's Dogma 2 quite dramatically since its release back in March."
While this is true, it's still the most janky game I've played since buying a PS5 at launch. The framerate yo-yos all over the place.
@extragood when the PS5 Pro had its initial reveal I was a huge critic, I hated the price and the video was an awful showing for its power, you can find multiple comments of me blasting/ridiculing it
Sony did such an awful job with it's reveal and it really was a huge mistake not using the likes of DF to show it off, as once I saw more analysis on their end I was sold and the £699 was no longer a hindrance.
Love this unique game and I'm still waiting for the DLC to finish the story...
Love this game. Even though the performance wasn't stellar it was nowhere near as bad as people made out and was far from an unplayable mess etc. So it's going to be even better on the ps5 Pro? Who would have thought this was going to be the case? It's funny how ps5 owners will moan that a £699 console will play a game better than the base console but it's funny how pc gamers never complain that a £800 gpu or a more powerful cpu will make current pc games run better with added features. These ps5 gamers that are going to jump ship and go pc gaming are in for a wake up call financially.
Will they be resolving the outrageous pop-in?
Haven't finished the game because NPCs just ghosting into existence from thin air is so annoying.
I hope poor Digital Foundry are working through the nights after November the 7th for all these Pro upgrades to analyse 🤣
Will it hit a solid 60fps though - the info suggests that within performance mode PSSR is the only additon. Now that would be very nice if the framerate was even close to locked 60fps, but it doesnt sound like they have altered anything else here, or really enabled the extra GPU power of Pro (This is presuming the "boost mode" of the Pro doesn't automatically use the full additional GPU power).
If the game is CPU bound, I have no idea why - i have seen plenty of games do far more without strangling the CPU. Maybe the extra CPU speed of Pro will fix, maybe not.
I played the demo not too long ago and the framerate was a complete dumpster fire (and thats being kind imo).
I hope im wrong and either they have done the work needed, or the Pro simply solves the issue, but given the state I saw this game in I just dont trust them to do anything bar the minimum possible, so wouldnt even think of buying until I see a thorough performance review.
@OldGamer999
Given how they have basically marketed the thing, as Sony haven't really, I would hope that Sony would have delivered them a number by now.... fully gift wrapped.
(I have the Pro on order, but that doesnt stop me thinking that Sonys marketing has been anything above crap!)
They have said they have a plan of attack based around testing a lot of games quickly, and looking at any 'interesting' cases more thoroughly. I think thats what they said - they certainly had lists of games they wanted to look at.
@Rich33 "I played the demo not too long ago and the framerate was a complete dumpster fire (and thats being kind imo)." I've been playing dd2 since launch and the framerate whilst admittedly not brilliant has never been a "dumpster fire" as you described it. I'm not sure what was wrong with the demo as I never tried it but maybe it was an older build? The games not perfect in any stretch and I'll never say it is but a lot of the issues have been massively exaggerated even by the gamers that play it. I have a decent TV with ALLM and VRR so maybe that helps with the framerate a little? Apparently it runs even better after the latest update but I have yet to try it out mainly because I'm playingvthrough the HZD remaster.
@MrPeanutbutterz don't expect it to ever be stable either, DD1 is still janky and has eye shattering fps drops
@Northern_munkey
My TV is also ALLM and VRR.
I cant remember fully but I thought the demo was the full game hardlocked for 2 hours, but the framerate drops I experienced were a disaster.
I first did a short intro sequence, after which i was flown a fair distance away - the intro wasnt the most amazing framerate-wise but wasnt too bad either.
Soon after (Crash) landing I can remember walking through a small castle like structure. The castle like structure had about a dozen npc's and the framerate turned into a bit of a slideshow while inside.
I got out of here and went out a bit into the open world - in the direction of some side quest about someone being attacked by harpies i think, and the framerate seemed to completely tank depending on which direction I was looking / moving - it was up and down all over the place.
That seemed the general theme after that - 1 moment the framerate was hovering around about 55-60fps, the next it dropped to what looked like low 40's / high 30's, then the next moment back up again, then back down again. Funnily enough going into combat didnt seem to negatively affect it like some games.
Im very framerate sensitive and not tolerant to framerate issues, and already had a headache from it, but persevered a bit, but had to turn it off not too long after.
Im pretty sure I played before the last patch as well, so it may well have been improved, but I dont think I can redo as it was a timed thing.
Pity, because other than framerate, the game seemed quite enjoyable. Hopefully between patches since, and the Pro enhancement, DF or other similar will give this a clean bill of health.
I’m trying to decide on which game to buy and play first on the PRO. I’m thinking this or Dragon Age what you saying…
@Mikey856 Despite the naysayers, I'm thinking Dragon age will be my first title on the pro next week too...
I bought it on PC so I'll likely stick with that. This being said the framerate is still all over the place and I'm playing it on a 4090. Be interesting to see how it performs on the Pro which I'll likely be buying next year but for now I'm not in any hurry.
@Rich33 I've never encountered anything as bad as you have. Like I've said it's not perfect and still needs some tlc but it's perfectly playable as is.
@Northern_munkey I played the demo, bought, and subsequently sold the game precisely because of the framerate being a dumpster fire.
And yes, of course your VRR display helps, but that doesn't change the fact the game is frequently outside the VRR window.
@Uromastryx Yep, watched my friend play a bit on PS3 recently and yikes...
@Rich33 You're not imagining it. The framerate is indeed a dumpster fire (even after the last big patch, which was when I played it).
"Yet for your sake, PS5 Pro, I would fain relinquish all I have" - Tim Roth, Pawn.
@MrPeanutbutterz did I say it was perfect? I understand that people have different experiences on this games performance and personally my opinion is that its all a bit over exaggerated. I understand what VRR's limitations are and that it's not a miracle cure for all of the games ills but it sure helps out. I'm interested as to why so many people have such bad experiences with this game as I've had a few myself but nothing game breaking. The lords of the fallen was another game that was reported on a daily basis as to having performance issues and again I felt those issues were blown out of proportion. I'm sorry to hear you didn't have a good time with dd2 and maybe the ps5 Pro will help iron out your issues with other games too 👍
@Titntin yeah think we are heading in that direction for now although this is still a game I’m very much interested in one day for sure. Her indoors is just comparing the reviews I’ve left it to her ha
@Loamy dammmn that’s complicated the situation 😂😂. I’ve been playing quite linear games lately aswell when I was a massive open world buff a while ago I felt like I needed a break from that style.
@Loamy you've hit the nail on the head. I love the way there is zero hand holding in dd2. I love the way that the fast travel takes a little while to get going too. Its got so much content in it and so many secrets that one play through is never going to be enough to see everything on offer. It's definitely a marmite game for sure but it's a game that's going to be over looked by casual gamers but that's the thing..its not aimed at them
@Titntin I hope its good mate. Let me know how dragon age turns out as I've liked all of them so far.
@MrPeanutbutterz @Northern_munkey
The problem is that peoples sensitivity, and tolerance to framerates can be very, very different, and some people cannot see issues that others do. Depth, length, and frequency of drops all probably have variable effects on people too.
As an extreme example there genuinely do seem to be people who cannot see much above 30fps, while others can, but are not bothered by 30fps in the slightest. I can easily see difference all the way up 90fps, and 120fps is better still but with very, very much dimished returns.
60fps just seems to be a place nearly everyone can at the very least tolerate.
These days I will only buy after a performance review or demo, hence why after the DF analysis of this game at launch showed a lot of problems I held off, but as I was still interested I gave the demo a go after it came out.
@Mikey856
Im going to behave like a kid in a sweet shop and have a quick look at a lot of my old games (including Hogwarts anf SM2 which I want to replay properly), but will probably settle down to play Dragon Age after a day or 2!
@Ravix Timmy boy was a riot and a jolly helpful chap every time he joined my Arisen's adventures.
@extragood I am one of those people who was initially hesitant about the PS5 Pro’s price. I started looking at gaming PCs, then realized that a graphics card alone would cost almost as much as the Pro. Plus I’m not Digital Foundry, peeping each pixel on a pause screen, so I’ll continue using my Mac for computer stuff (and WoW occasionally), and PlayStation for gaming.
@Northern_munkey
I played a few hours last night and I can at least tell you I'm having a blast. The progression is more fun than I would have expected.
However, it all depends what you want out of Dragon Age. If you're here for the lore and some fun gameplay, great. If you want a CRPG... this is not it.
In the end we went with Dragon Age as she loved Inquisition all them years ago and she says it reminds her of when we got together ha. I can think of better things from back in them Days but there we are 😗 (it was a damn good game tbf)
@symmetrian cheers for the info. I'm not a crpg fan really as I much prefer the arpg genre. Once I've wrapped up the HZD remaster and the sequel I might have a punt on dragon age.
