Ubisoft is changing the way Assassin's Creed Shadows' stealth mechanics work for both new protagonists, the samurai Yasuke and the shinobi Naoe. Ubisoft detailed how it all works in a blog post that appears to have since been nuked; Nevertheless, Eurogamer got the details.
It seems the developers are trying to find a middle ground between the game's traditional, instant-death assassinations and the serious damage done once inflated RPG health pools appeared on the scene, beginning with Assassin's Creed Origins. By default, stronger enemies will be able to deny assassination attempts, and some weaker enemies will be able to defend against specific types (only vulnerable from above, for example), communicated by a coloured icon. An option will allow all of this to be disabled, returning to the classic insta-kill style if it sounds like too much of a departure.
Associate game director Simon Lemay-Comtois explained the rationale: "When it comes to assassinations, progress and context work in hand. Invest in perks that increase your assassination damage and test things around. A strong enemy may survive a frontal assassination but die from a sneaky air assassination."
Lemay-Comtois goes on to say that as there is no equivalent to Bayek's bird companion, Senu, players will need to employ the Observe mechanic to perform a similar function without the benefit of flight. Fittingly enough, shadows themselves will provide complete invisibility, and like a Sengoku Splinter Cell, lanterns can be destroyed to create additional areas of darkness. Both characters can lie prone, and Naoe is the smallest AC protagonist to date, allowing her to hide in some unexpected places.
Does an increased focus on the game's supposedly central stealth mechanics sound good? Are you looking forward to the next Assassin's Creed? Slink off into the comments section below.

No more bird sounds good. It was novel in Origins but has gotten stale. I do like the sound of assassinations having to be more thoughtful rather than being outright gimped but it will probably just be annoying having to find a way above certain enemies.
This all sounds very interesting. If they can channel more Splinter Cell mechanics it might just save the stealth completely.
@Balie3000 It really shouldn’t be true that Thief 2 has more impressive stealth than basically all games releasing in 2024.
Some throats are simply too powerful to slit. The blade breaks upon impact.
@nessisonett Or MGS 2 for that matter. The fact that the enemies duck your grab and clear a room surprised the crap out of me for how old a game like that is.
@nessisonett True though Thief is almost more of a stealth simulator than just a game with stealth mechanics. Dishonored, too.
I still really want it to play more like Hitman. We don't need perks or different kill type enemies or stronger ones that resist being stabbed in the throat. Instead of worrying that the character is "too cheap" with their instant kills, make it a puzzle to try and reach your target. Allow us to blend in with crowds, create diversions...have various different ways in which we can dispatch out targets. Too bad we've also got Yasuke for the button mash crowd. Even Assassin's Creed 1 managed some interesting puzzle-like set pieces way back then.
Can I assassinate one of the protagonists?
Ubisoft need to overhaul a lot more than stealth mechanics before I'm back on the wagon...
I'm only interested in it being a good stealth game, so that's good news.
I'm not sure about this game anymore even though I do like stealth, I'm more interested in Tom Clancy's The Division 3.
People really falling for this? They said the same thing about mirage and that had an ability when you teleport like a mutant from x-men.
"Invest in perks that increase your assassination damage" - We've had that in Valhalla
"stronger enemies will be able to deny assassination attempts" - Valhalla again
Then two features ripped straight from splinter cell conviction, ubisoft just relying fully on assassin's creed and rainbow six siege a game that is an embarrassment to what it was supposed to be and embarrassment to the franchise.
As if anyone would believe Ubisoft after they outright refused to fix stealth in Outlaws opting to remove it from some of the missions instead.
Sounds awesome. I also appreciate the option to turn off the more specific RPG assassination gameplay. I'm also glad the eagle scout mechanic is gone for the classic eagle vision instead. Then there's the weather system affecting which routes you can take... there's a lot going on in this game.
Really looking forward to this game!
The whole point of the instant kills in an rpg environment is rewarding player skill rather than just stacking the odds through grinding.
I like the idea that certain enemies can only be killed by certain types of stealth kill. It makes the little bases and hideouts into even more of a puzzle box.
@McBurn how dare you disrespect the modern gamer.
@NintenGuy: Yeah, seems to be the excuse for everything these days^^
@McBurn Hm. Strange question. Which one and why? Just out of curiosity.
@Paramahansa: It was a joke based on the discourse around the game. But it WOULD be funny if you could actually kill one of 'em with the other xD
I think Valhalla (which I put 40-60 hours into before quitting because I was bored and it felt like it would never end) put me off of AC games forever.
I'm 56 hours into Valhalla and loving it. Although I must admit I'm not trying to get everything done in each region anymore
@Paramahansa look at this guy trying to bait an obvious joke. Lol!
@NintenGuy Don't look at me, I just woke up!
