While Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth – the second entry in Square Enix’s remake trilogy – offered a vast open world, fans of the original PS1 title will know the Highwind airship forms a crucial part of traversal in the closing act of the game.
Speaking at G-Star 2024 in Busan this week, director Naoki Hamaguchi revealed his team would “not cheat” when it comes to this crucial element.
“Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth provided a vast map, but in the third game, the Highwind airship will appear, so we need to let you experience the world from a higher perspective,” he said, as reported by 4Gamer via Google Translate. “We will take on the challenge of being able to fly freely around the map.”
According to Hamaguchi, the plot and concept for the third game has already been completed, and development is already underway. We wouldn’t expect it for at least three years yet, but it’s reassuring to know progress is already ongoing.
Are you looking forward to the third part of Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s trilogy? How do you think the team is going to make the airship work? Let us know in the comments section below.

I haven't played Original games. And I'm avoiding anything from that side of spoiler. This Remake Trilogy is awsome for me. I enjoyed 1st Remake, I am enjoying Rebirth on Pro finally and I will definitely pre-order final game. Let them create something epic )
I'm interested in how they'll handle it. I imagine it will have a set height so you can't get too low to collide with objects and landing is only allowed at designated spots. If it ends up being more of a portable base than an exploration method I'm fine with that.
This should be interesting final fantasy 7 remake and rebirth is excellent.word up son

After how Rebirth ends, no. Imagine being told over and over again that you're going to change history and destiny only to have the exact same ***** happens on the 11th hours. Only this time in 4k and a ***** PhD to understand what's going on.
Not everything needs to be a ***** Kingdom Hearts.
I’d rather remove the airship and have a trophy list that caters to trophy hunting.
The way the “airship” was implemented in XV was technically impressive, interesting and weird (like the whole game tbh) so I am curious to see what they’ll do.
This team has my complete trust. I liked Remake and with Intergrade I started to think they really knew what they were doing. With Rebirth they just gave us what I consider the best modern JRPG I played. Finger crossed 🤞🏻 for goty awards season.
@AinsleyE Yeah, and like XII they'll probably have an anchor coming down from the sky rather than have it land on the ground like in the original. It's way too big to land in most places.
I honestly can't wait for part 3 ( I like to call it Final Fantasy 7 Repose). My only concern is for them to stick the landing with the story, I have complete faith in the combat because Rebirth's is one of the best combat systems out there.
I can’t wait for the final chapter of this game. Rebirth improved what I felt was the weakest section of 7, so I fully trust Square with what’s next. Remake and Rebirth were both GotYs for their respective years, in my opinion.
@QiaraIris Agreed, and I really went into it optimistic too. But the team behind these remakes can't comprehend subtlety in storytelling at all. As a big fan of the original and to an extent the first remake, it really bummed me out 😓
But seriously Squenix, give us a separate download version of Queens Blood and I'll play the hell out of it 🤩
I don’t really mind if we didn’t get the airship, the vehicles in Rebirth were good enough for travelling, I’d prefer the Highwind to be more of a base of operations. Considering Rebirth is the greatest FF and arguably best RPG of all time I do not envy the team making part 3 at all.
As much as I liked the High wind the best airship they ever did for the games was FF8s Ragnarok especially when you see the cutscene in 8 where you attack Lunatic Pandora and it's fires it's machines gun and Turbos through the shield as it's still firing and then it's Railgun to blow a hole in the side.

Rebirth became a chore for me. Got to around the Dyne fight and I got frustrated. Dude gets his arm blown off from a few shots but eats literally thousands of rounds and morphs into some outrageous looking monster lol. I was enjoying up to that point. Got to that awful gongaga region and that was it for me.
It wasn't that special in the original. They already did a great job with the ship sailing around the water. Do the same thing but in the air, have points of interest where you can land. Especially cool optional side areas and it'll be perfect
I'm glad the 3rd game is sounding like it's gonna be similar to Rebirth. As much as I loved Remake, I much preferred how open Rebirth was and full of side quests, side bosses, and mini games that absolutely did not bother me aside from a few specific spots in the story
@REALAIS You'll love fighting the weapons, especially under water. And Cid flying a spaceship! And fighting in the Northern Crater!
That's super cool. I think giving answers like that means they understand the assignment. The pop-in, tho.
Only thing I care about is - will it be playable on base PS5 or will it be PS6 only? I thought Rebirth was fine on PS5 so I’d like them to finish it on there, but I also need it to run, not crawl, if they focus too much on the new Pro hardware. I have no problem with a dual release, the more people who can play it the better, as long as that dual release isn’t Pro and PS6. And 3 years from now will be cutting it kind of close.🤞
Having never played the original FF7, the final chapter of the remake is my most anticipated game by FAR.
You know, I was wondering just a few days ago if the original game even had an airship. Guess I have my answer now…
They should have just named them Part 1 2 and 3. I still find people who aren’t familiar who think rebirth is a definite edition of remake lol. They seemed to believe that everyone knows FF7 when in fact there tons of people playing for the first time.
@SilentBluntman I don't think it's that. It's not like Mass Effect was called Mass Effect: Part 1. Obviously, we call it ME1 now but it was simply ME at the time. Or, I guess, LotR: Fellowship of the Ring instead of LotR: Part 1. I think the drop-off was a mixture of negative reaction to the plot changes, particularly the time ghosts, and the gameplay being so different - and honestly quite gruelling compared to the original which was pretty smooth sailing.
Also, if I unknowingly bought something which was just part 1, and assuming I actually liked it, I'd be really inclined to buy the next parts when they came out.
It will be out in 2027 and coincide with FFVII's 30th Anniversary.
@SilentBluntman Well the reason I picked ME is that it was always just a part 1. It's full of loose ends, and choices that don't do anything until 1 or 2 games later. Of course, yeah, most games are just made as a one-off and then they're like "oh wow, that sold well - let's do more" but when games are released just as a part 1 without calling themselves that, people don't normally mind. Also, think of expansions that are there to finish the story too, like StarCraft Brood War and Diablo 2 Lord of Destruction. And the new Diablo IV one, come to think of it.
As for the cost, bear in mind we're talking like £60 spread out over 3 or 4 years. I'd get it if you paid £60 and the game ended after a bit and said "please pay another £60 to carry on" and kept doing that in quick succession. But this is a series of long games that come out once every 3 or 4 years. Yeah it's £180 in total, but over almost a decade. I don't think people are going to feel the sting of that. I do think they'd feel the sting of a convoluted story that's falling over itself to be meta as f**k while also, for a lot of players, being quite tough and stressful.
He said the plot has been completed? Wasn’t that completed 25 years ago? 😂
Joking aside, I’m definitely interested in how they’ll implement the airship. The devs are gonna earn there keep with that for sure. Good luck!
I still not played the first remake, I'm waiting for all 3 to be released first, and then and finally then when it's confirmed no part 4 I will play it.
.......I'm sick of waiting.
I gave up on the platinum for Rebirth. I'm glad I at least got it for the remake. I hope the side missions for the third part are not as ridiculous...
@QiaraIris
FFVII "Remake" and Rebirth are my teenage self's dream become nightmare.
I always wanted a proper remake, and they just pulled the ending of "The Substance" with this.
3 years or more in between each entry is wild. It’s hard to hold interest when it’s so far apart.
Hope they don’t make the platinum so ridiculous this time. I adore the game but Rebirth is just another universe
@Mikey856
Agreed
I platinumed Remake but stoppef around 75% on Rebirth. Would take 40+ hours to get the remaining 25% and as an adult with 2 jobs, I simply can't be bothered.
This sounds like an opportunity to implement a mini-game!
@NEStalgia I think they will stay away from the 50 million minigames this time, for sure there will be some, but Rebirth really took the piss, never met anyy1 that said oh those minigames were so fun 👀
Airship means we may have a means to reach the Knights of the Round summon.
@Nei XV is the best VII they created so far.
