Update #2: Players on PS4 are now reporting they too have received the new patch for the GTA Trilogy that implements the original art direction. It's a 4.054GB update on PS4.
Update #1: While the GTA Trilogy has been massively upgraded on the PS5, restoring its original art direction, the patch is not currently available on the PS4. It’s unclear why the update hasn’t been made available on Sony’s last-gen system – these are originally PS2 titles, after all – but we’ll check in with Rockstar and try and get some kind of update.
The good news is that all three games are massively improved on the PS5 at least. In addition to the art direction enhancements, skeletons have been reworked so that characters don’t look so strange in specific poses, like when crouching or riding bicycles. The weather effects, like rain, also look vastly superior with the added fog and haze effects restored.
One other thing we should point out is that original developer Grove Games’ name has been removed entirely from this project. It’s not massively surprising given the quality of its original work, but worth pointing out all the same.
Original Article: The trilogy of 3D GTA games first released on the PS2 are among some of the greatest titles ever made, but Rockstar’s dismal Definitive Edition really disappointed earlier in the generation.
While they added some contemporary conveniences, like checkpoints, they practically ruined the art direction of the originals, and were panned by fans. We gave the collection a 5/10 in our review: “Rockstar built its reputation on attention to detail, and while all three of these games still come highly recommended, this disappointing compilation will go down as a stain on the label’s record.”

But the developer has been quietly updating the games in collaboration with an unexpected partner: Netflix. For those who don’t know, you can play titles like GTA: San Andreas on your mobile phone as part of your subscription to the streaming service.
Now a new patch has implemented improvements from that mobile version into the PS5 remaster. A toggle, named Classic Lighting, maintains the original PS2 era art direction. Character models have also been improved, while fog effects have returned to give the games that hazy look they’re known for.
We’ll need to spend more time with the remasters to properly appraise whether they’re worth playing now, but based on our first impressions of San Andreas, it undoubtedly looks a lot better three years removed from its original release.
Of course, Rockstar deserves no real credit here: these classics shouldn’t have been butchered in the first place. But for the purposes of preservation, we’re glad it’s committed to continuing to improve these remasters – especially as the PS2 versions were unceremoniously pulled from the PS Store to make way for them.

They should have just released the original PS2 versions.
It retail's as low as 15 euros so i might try them for some goofy fun. Playing elden ring right now has become a little tiring.
Did they ever fix some of the absolutely butchered character models? I still have the physical PS2 versions of these games since the PS4 versions were also disasters.
@ButterySmooth30FPS They're supposed to be improved, yes. I need to test it properly to make sure, though.
@get2sammyb Oh duh, it said improved character models right in the article! I need to read before snarking...
@ButterySmooth30FPS Some have been fixed back since release but the art direction taken for the higher fidelity remaster is still here.
But I know some fixes were netflix-only, don't know if they were ever implemented on consoles and PC (maybe with this update ?)
@neufel This update is meant to include many of those Netflix improvements.
What about III and Vice City? Any updates to them?
As someone who never played the originals but recently spent 60hrs platinum-ing Vice City via backwards compatibility on PS5, I thought it looked and played fine before these improvements. Perhaps I wasn't tinted by nostalgia - it certainly wasn't unbearably awful
@get2sammyb Yeah it's literally said in the article, don't know why I said "maybe", thanks for the correction!
No need to update it, my PS5 Pro will convert it to 4K 120fps as standard and add VR.
@ATaco They did, on PS4, and people moaned about those too. Truth is people just like to complain. The remasters obviously had issues at launch but no way were they “not worth playing” until now. It just became fashionable to hate on them.
How do these games stack up against something like GTA 4 for example?
Hang on is this not about a pro patch update? 🤭
(Sorry I’ll get my coat)
@VeldinX People moaned because they were practically unplayable. Constant stutters and slowdown (including the music) and awful ghosting.
They still won't have all the original music, so could never be the definitive versions
I just play the black label launch version on my ps2 with hdmi upscale adapter
While I love these games to be playable on current consoles, it's sad that many factors (like the music being gone) make this game an inferior version.
@NeuralDeclan You didn't play the version people got while paying good money. Yeah the game was a disgusting cash grab with less then bare minimum work done. You could go to say the game was in a worse state then the original while pulling the originals and forcing the community modded versions offline that were infinitely better.
Removed - flaming/arguing
Heads up, this update is NOT releasing on PS4. You might want to update the title to reflect this.
@ButterySmooth30FPS See here we go again with the “unplayable” nonsense. Again, yes, they had issues but they were far from unplayable.
@Flaming_Kaiser I’m not making excuses. I literally said there were problems. 😂 Rockstar are not saints and are certainly not in my good books these days. That said, players weren’t fair either. The games simply were not “unplayable”. That was my point. Sorry I’m more balanced in my view and not just jumping on the “R* bad” train.
@Flaming_Kaiser I was not making specific reference to the launch technical issues, more commenting on the artistic changes to lighting and character models between the PS2 original and the remasters which persisted. Those never bothered me.
@Mordath17 Yes!
@VeldinX Rockstar isn't bad but then at that time they were the knew they released a terrible product.
They pulled the OG versions and took the fanmade modded games offline because they knew their product was subpar and people would notice even more.
I wanted to try Vice City my favorite but in that state I would not feel good paying money for such a terrible product.
Why pay money for a worse product then the cheaper original games that were in a better state and still with a better soundtrack.
@VeldinX The PS4 versions of the originals performed worse than the PS2 versions. It's pretty difficult to play a game that comes to a full stop every 4-5 seconds on top of input lag.
@Flaming_Kaiser Vice City is my favourite as well, and for what it’s worth I absolutely loved my time getting the 100% and platinum trophy on both the PS4 emulated version and the remastered version.
But yes, I do agree that it was a flawed product. Their first mistake being the hiring of the god-awful War Drum/Grove Street Games again after their first attempt at a San Andreas remaster (on PS3/360). I just feel it didn’t deserve quite the amount of hate it got. What saddens me most is that any chance of the GTA Stories finally getting the spotlight they deserve with a release on modern platforms probably disappeared after that backlash.
@ButterySmooth30FPS Fair enough. I didn’t have any problems as major as that during my playthroughs. Worst thing I experienced was that weird line across the middle of the screen on SA.
They should have hired somebody like bluepoint games to do the remasters. They could have done the uncharted treatment with them. They would have sold double the amount if the games had been well remastered from the start
What a birthday present! Finally! Been waiting 3 years for this after paying full price at launch.
@ATaco i still have access to mine. If you bought them before they pulled them from the store, you should still have access to them.
My ps portal is ready for this!
@CheapCheepBeach Yep, I just tried tried and no update on PS4.
Update is exclusive to current gen consoles only.

I tried this out earlier and the lighting at certain times of day is much better and more reminiscent of the PS2 originals. Overall I'd say they are a good way to play these games now, of course they should have done a much better job in the first place
"especially as the PS2 versions were unceremoniously pulled from the PS Store to make way for them"
I believe the PS2 Classic version are still exist on PS3 Store. There's a trilogy bundle for like 30 bucks.
@Mordath17 they said its fixed on the trilogy, hope so.
Honestly it does look great now plus a flawless 60 FPS, crazy it took 3 YEARS for the game to look as good as the 90’s originals, I might give them a go since I bought them at launch but never played them due to being soooo disappointed back in the day.
PS4 PRO with 1080p tv: The definitive verserion looks great to me. Nice bright colors, clear with no grain/haze, and none of that yellow tint. With certain weather and by how I set the game's and my tv display I could make the game look ugly like in the comparison photo above.
I purchased the original the week of release in 2004 and played the regular PS4 version, and the definitive edition, after patches, looks and plays the best for me. The races, overall driving, and missions and activities are improved. I was successfull on my first try at "Life's a Beach." Also the flying stuff at Verdant Meadows was easier because I could actually see with the thick fog removed.
@VeldinX The game deserved so much more love I had a blast with the original even with all it's flaws.
I bought them on launch and haven't been back since, has it really been three years??
@VeldinX
Just seems like a lazy cash grab attempt from a publisher that can obviously do much better. It's honestly better to play the original with mods instead of this "definitive" version.
Cool they added the option but imo it just makes it look super cartoony. But I’m also someone who’s never played these games so I don’t have nostalgia for the original visuals at all.
@ATaco They couldn't they don't have the source code and RenderWare engine was used for it is their excuse
@get2sammyb... firstly... changing the colour grading is NOT an upgrade. Secondly, changing the 3D model skeletons is NOT a next(current) gen enhancement... Edit - you literally are highlighting that they restored the og haze effects... as such an awesome upgrade.
Sigh... I think we all get it... need more stories to feed the internet monster... but how about actually being a bit critical of what you're being fed (or writing). Otherwise, you're just like every other knob you-tuber/blogger that has an opinion. Including me (of course).
First step... instead of saying you should test it yourself... test it before writing. Or say it's just an advert / rinse-and-repeat paste-and-copy filler.
Groove Street Games used the mobile ports for these defective editions they also used the mobile port for the Xbox 360 Anniversary edition as well which was seriously broken. The companies CEO commented and said he loved the fact his company was getting talked about even though it was bad press for the launch of this Unreal AI cash grab.
That's all it was they used AI to do it all for them and they'd fixed it later (they didn't), whether it got an update or not it's a joke broken cash grab. Im lucky I still have the originals on Steam I just use a patch some person created to improve it and works perfectly fine. Also they released each game on PS+ for a month and take it away and San Andreas is leaving it this month just as they release this patch well done R*
Older version looks way better. Streets are not orange and the sky for sure isn‘t green even in san andreas
@get2sammyb Whilst Take-two being cheapskates on renewing music licensing on several of the original soundtracks (ironic for a so called "definitive edition"),sadly will never be fixed,I will be curious to hear if the "falling through the textures" bugs like the ramp to the cargo ship in Vice City or the area near its Airport that did the rounds have been addressed? 🤔
Rockstar finally patched the games on last-gen, I’m play right now on Switch and it finally feels nice to play both handheld and on TV! No more bluriness, visual glitches and the games finally look crisp on TV! Also the classic lightning really does the games justice. I’m sure it plays fine on PS4 now too
Fun games to just cruise around. The controls are still horrible in the remasters. Some of the missions are near impossible to complete. Not fun.
Lol, I was just looking at my Games list to choose a game to play once I'm done with DA: The Veilguard and then decided to play GTA Trilogy. Then I saw this news piece and happy with my choice now
Never played the original games so I hope I'll like it.
I'll stick to the original PC versions with mods
@ATaco Certainly, if you’re a PC player. That obviously isn’t an option on consoles though. What R* did on PC with this trilogy is shameful for sure but I’m only really speaking about the console releases.
@Romans12 Rockstar have always had horrendous controls to all their titles - Red Dead Redemption 2 being one of the absolute worst.
Might be time to pick it up then! Question for the community though would it make sense to get a ps4 physical copy for my ps4 and ps5? Is it essentially the same game on ps5 or is there an upgrade path for it?
make games have artsyles again!
@Cerny boooring
Happy it's out on PS4 as well
I went on the netflix app and it says Vice City & GTA 3 are leaving the platform on the 13th December
Is this a free upgrade on PS5?
Didn't know there was a native PS5 version.
I don't really see the logic in "But for the purposes of preservation, we’re glad it’s committed..."
The ps2 originals have been perfectly preserved in various iso sets, this is definitely not needed for any form of preservation.
Seems like the "definitive" edition wasnt quite that definitive..
New(old) color filter looks horrible. I hated the orange hue from the originals, and now they are putting it back? Why dont we all just go back to CRTs and black and white? Would be better looking.
