Before the all-encompassing juggernaut that was and still is The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, there was The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
A classic open world RPG experience — which has been the source of countless internet memes over the years — Oblivion is still great fun to actually sit down and play, despite its inherent wonkiness. You can quite easily argue that its dodgy progression systems and hilariously voiced NPCs are part of its charm.
Anyway, a new rumour suggests that a full-on remake is coming. As picked up by Insider Gaming, this all started with a supposed leak on Reddit — a post that has since been deleted. However, it's said that the leak was indeed legit, and was verified by those who run the GamingLeaksAndRumours sub.
Reportedly, the information came from someone who had previously worked at Virtuos — a globe-spanning development company that tackles all kinds of stuff, from remasters and remakes to outsourced assets, updates, and DLC for AAA games.
Virtuos is behind Metal Gear Solid Delta, for instance, and very recently, it developed Patch 2.2 for Cyberpunk 2077.
According to this anonymous source, the Oblivion remake is happening, and it's running on Unreal Engine 5. They had expected it to release in either late 2024 (obviously not the case), or early 2025 (which also seems somewhat unlikely at this point).
But again, this is more about the project being real. Similar rumours have surfaced in the past — there have been whispers regarding remasters for basically all of Bethesda's old games, for example — but there's some actual weight behind this latest leak.

Oh man I would be all over this. I wouldn't even care if they just gave it a small lick of pain, added full trophy support and sold it as a Remaster. Would still be an insta buy. Have so many fond memories of this game.
FINALLY… the hero of Kvatch… returns to PlayStation! 🤨
It’s been 16 years since I last played it so I’m down for some remastered Play-Doh faces.
Oblivion is a game I really want to play but the original always felt dated to me. Hopefully this remake makes it much more modern and I can finally play thru it.
I'd be more interested in a remake of morrowind to be honest but this is great news as oblivion was better than skyrim.
And people complain at Sony for remaster/remakes! (Although I may be getting confused with Skyrim)
To be fair, the idea isnt bad but UE5 is not a good choice for anything but a very linear world game.
This would be amazing
It would be sad (for Bethesda) if Virtuous is able to do a "Bethesda game" better using UE5 than Bethesda could do with Starfield using its own engine.
Heck, Obsidian is doing better at "Bethesda games" than Bethesda.
It'll be out before the Unreal Engine 5 Gothic Remake, regardless 💀
I think the controls could do modernizing. If it's from the ground up remade, the load times should hopefully be fixed, they were so long in the original release
The faces are finally getting fixed!!! Hopefully lol
I only played Oblivion once and I’ve never gone back to it because of the awful levelling mechanics. Some complain about remasters and remakes but this definitely deserves it.
I remember finding a preowned copy at GameStop for 360 that was the steelbook and came with all dlc a few months before Skyrim was coming out and I wanted to see what this Elder Scrolls was all about and the guy who worked there was telling me about it excitedly so I bought it. To keep this from getting too long I absolutely did not like it although I somewhat enjoyed the dlc focusing on the mad god I think it was but yeah just a jank fest with horrible quests, combat, voice acting, character models and skill system. Skyrim though I absolutely loved and I know we had the remaster but that was barebones so I would love for that to be remade. Oh and hopefully the remake gets rid of the Daedric gates because my god were they a horrible idea.
This game was so wonky and hard to have fun with that it completely put me off of Elder Scrolls. Skyrim had the same affect on me. Bought it 5 different times because I wanted to love it.
After playing Witcher IV I gave Skyrim another shot and loved it. After Skyrim, I got into ESO and despised it! Called it the most boring game I'd ever played. Now, for the past 3 years, ESO is most most played game every month in my PS wrap up lol. Persistence is the key! Still hate Oblivion though.
I love wonky Oblivion but it’s definitely the black sheep compared to Morrowind and Skyrim. I also question how true this is considering the Creation Engine exists. Also poor Skyblivion if this is true!
Yes I'll be getting this I wonder if they will give it for free on Steam how I got Skyrim Legendary Edition they just gave me it over the original I had
But this game was the creator of crap DLC
@nessisonett Skyblivion I'll still be buying because those guys have done so much work on that game
@nessisonett was thinking the same about skyblivion team. The scaled leveling made the Gates impossible if you did extensive leveling early. I member getting every. Single. Nirnroot lol
I would probably enjoy playing it. Although, I don't know how the Unreal engine would work with a Bethesda game of this type.
Since as much as the Creation Engine is a old buggy mess. It is also what gives the Fallout/Elder Scrolls games their uniqueness. Compared to other RPG's.
I'd buy all 5 versions of it!
Would I be interested in an Oblivion remake? That depends. The core ideas at play are fantastic. Putting Bethesda developers in charge of coding it would be like placing Stevie Wonder at the helm of the Titanic. They are the last people on earth that should be punching in code.
Literally everything wrong with the Oblivion we have is due to Bethesda’s utter inability to produce a game that isn’t a bug filled, glitch riddled broken mess. I cite Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallouts 3, 4, 76 and Starfield as all the proof you need. Their engine always has been, is, and always will be trash.
That said, a completely different studio (Virtuous) using a completely different engine (UE5) instills hope that we can get the Oblivion we always deserved but never received. I’m no fan of UE5 in and of itself, but oh dear god is it infinitely better than that geriatric alphabet soup of game code that Bethesda’s been churning out slop with since the early 2000’s. Fingers crossed.
I actually liked Oblivion more than Skyrim. Bring it on!
Guess they finally ran out of ways to remake Skyrim.
Hopefully their faithful reproduction doesn't include the bug that left me as a vampire with no way to fix it.
i actually liked it more then skyrim myself so im 100% going to play this.
And it'll only be on Xbox because it's technically a new game from Bethesda.
Why this one? Remake Morrowind! It as far superior to Oblivion where they totally screwed up the entire levelling system.
I've never played it, so I could see myself playing a remake. I've only played Skyrim, as far TES goes.
The Bethesda leak from the Activision acquisition hearings basically already confirmed this
This is just a rumor, the first strong indicator was the NVidia leak which notoriously revealed many games before they were announced. The real confirmation was the Xbox court document from before Covid showing an Oblivion release in 2022 I think. This is one of my all-time favorite games but if they actually remake it I think it will lose all its charm. I think the best way to treat it would just be trying to get a high-res, good performance port with trophy support and maybe the mod manager.. You've got to keep the original voice lines and preferably all the assets and face models too
That $2.50 horse armor is going to cost $25 in 2025.
"Make it so!"
blah blah......
No way? I'm playing it again at the moment. It's streaming through Premium and you have to be a foot away from a store sign to read it but it's still a great game. I hope they add Shivering Isles too and give the UI some extra work, the map at the moment on PS5 is really janky. I'd wonder how the original character models and dialogue will be handled. Then there's the landscape itself, once you leave the city there's a lot of flat land without trees or rocks. Skyrim already had all of that, surely they'd have to Speed Tree in more landscape.
This has been rumoured for a while, and I am all for it. I believe it was in the Xbox/Bethesda leak, though plans change. But I hope they address some aspects like the combat which has not aged well. And perhaps even some of the repetitive dungeon design. Though I realise changing things is always a touchy subject for some.
@Northern_munkey Morrowind was wonderful. But have you tried to play it recently? It's design is pretty obtuse for modern day and there's a lot of things that would need QoL improvements.
Oblivion is amazing, but UE5 is proving to be a not very good game engine.
I had a lot of trouble diving deep into Fallout 4 earlier this year. It was too “open world” with very little direction so I got overwhelmed. I guess I need my hand held a lot 😂😂😂 I like games still having a linear storyline for the most part in the beginning to get players to understand what the heck were doing 😂😂😂 Then it can branch off into a vast open world.
I’m not sure if Elder Scrolls are the same but in a different setting. Yet, I’d like to give this a go eventually if it comes to PS. Maybe it’s a me issue, Fallout 4 issue or both of us have issues 😂😭😂
@Rich33 Big difference, oblivion is a 2006 game whereas sony literally remasters games that don't need remastering like three years after release for example the last of us twice, the last of us 2 (why?) and other titles i am sure.
There was literally no reason to remaster the last of us 2.
I’d rather they remaster new vegas
It's my favourite of all the elder scrolls. But I do worry that the inevitable 'quality of life' improvements of a remake might sour my memories of it. I'll keep an eye on it if it is real though.
@Northern_munkey 100% agreed on morrowind. Especially considering it's age.
That being said I'm all over this as well unless they just haphazardly use AI to do the conversion. That worked so well for that garbage gta trilogy.....
I always thought Oblivion was the one that should have been in VR, but with better magic combat. Maybe this time, at the very least with mods, anyway!
I'm absolutely sick of remakes, but if they add controller support and shiny graphics to Oblivion while leaving absolutely everything else the same then I'll be up for it.
My PC is hooked up to my TV so mouse and keyboard has prevented me ever retunring to it.
As long as it doesn't play as Skyrim.
Despite me not being a big fan of Skyrim but really liking Fallout this could be very cool. Also it would be one of the more deserving of a 1:1 remake than many others
That's...actually kind of great news, and I hope they are signaling a shift from their internal engine. I hope they are using this to see how well these games function outside of Creation 2.0 (or whatever they are calling it). Starfield is a mess.
Edit: Oh, silly me, it's just a rumor. Didn't Insider Gaming do some real nefarious ish recently with AC Shadows?
@KundaliniRising333 @themightyant I've not played morrowind for god knows how long. I remember being immersed in it for a long, long time. Yeah it's very janky by todays standards but they could easily sort that out and make it more cohesive. Sometimes I think the games that actually deserve a remake get overlooked because I'd love a remake of the original deus ex.
@Fishnpeas you can use a controller on oblivion. I use my xbox pad on my laptop to play it when I'm away from home.
This is a game that definitely deserves a remake! Played it to death on day 1 in 2007 on my Xbox 360. Bring on a PS5 version please.
I’d very much enjoy jumping back in, the guild quest lines were all fantastic, but I really hope they’d fix a few things:
That’s it. The rest I’m happy with just a spruce up. Hopefully any remake still lets you climb up paintbrushes
@Northern_munkey A Morrowind remake would be AMAZING but the amount of work that would take, and the sheer scope / size of that game is insane. Trying to build a world that size and scope and modern fidelity is probably financially unfeasible without using some sort of procedural generation / generative AI. Which would put some people off but is probably a smart use of the tech. Think No Man’s Sky but a lot smarter and with better curated elements than Starfield.
But people would just say it was empty nowadays, which it was, we usually prefer density to sheer size nowadays
@themightyant 👍
Omg first I’ve seen of this. This game was the first RPG i ever played. Me and my mate mullered it! Please let this happen
Oblivion is much more fun than Skyrim. Creeping around in those old Ayleid ruins and taking someone out with an arrow was a fantastic experience.
Please, please, please, PLEEEEEEEEASE DON'T SCREW THIS UP!!!! 😭🙏
It had the best dark brotherhood quest line, I'd love to replay it.
Finally!!! My PS3 version is freezing in about 10seconds after loading save.
I feel like I've been waiting for this a whole life time. Elder Scrolls 4, RE Code Veronica, a new Killzone ( a remake of the first would be awesome) and a Ninja Gaiden sequel are all I want now.
Forgot to mention now Microsoft needs to Remaster Fallout New Vegas with modern hardware support
@djlard If the save is over 10mb it was a bug that was never fixed on that gen consoles it would corrupt on Xbox 360 why you have to do new separate saves every so often. The fallout 3 GOTY edition still has this bug
@Nakatomi_Uk So if I make separate save after loading my original?
I would love this...and considering MS's direction, I see this coming to PS5.
@Rich33 well ya people complain about remake/remasters of sony games when most of them didn't need it. Oblivion is 18 years old and feels very dated so this warrants a remake/remaster. And for UE5 being only good for linear games, just look at stalker 2 for example and you'll you're just plain wrong.
Never played Oblivion but I enjoyed the heck out of Skyrim so definitely looking forward to this remake
I could definitely see this being announced at the xbox developer direct they normally do in January, with release for a couple of months time
I really don't see how this will work out. Bethesda rpg are deeply intervined with there engine and I doubt that UE5 will work for this kind of game. But then again this is maybe test for engine switch.
@PixeledCanuck
Just read the DF (via EG) technical review of Stalker 2 (series X) as I was unfamiliar with the game as I dont play on Xbox - "stuttering" / "rarely hits" 60fps / "normally in the 40s or 50s during combat or exploration" / "choppy".
That sounds pretty apalling to me and I wouldnt go near the game.
UE5 is pretty resource hungry for consoles (particularly as I dont even think it looks that good in some cases, with Sony's 1st party and some 3rd party engines getting far better results, with much better performance).
Sometimes the far more powerful Pro can significantly help matters - I understand Lords of the fallen runs pretty well on Pro, but that is essentially a pretty linear game, and I haven't seen a tech review.
So all in all UE5 does not sound the best idea for an Oblivion remake on console.
@Rich33 didn't know consoles had a hard time with UE5 so good thing I'm on PC 😅
The last decent Bethesda game.
@Northern_munkey Bethesda makes the same bugs return in all the versions of Skyrim lets hope they modernise and fix these issues.
@Flaming_Kaiser indeed..we must stand against memory lag and backwards flying dragons 🤣
@djlard
Yeah you have to keep doing that just before it gets to 10MB you can check the save file size under the PS3 saves management section on the XBM.
In F3 when I played the DLC especially the Alien Abduction one I had to save every 10 mins on a new save because of the bug. They never fixed it and it would hard lock my PS3 it was a game engine bug they never fixed, even though ironically they delayed the F3 GOTY edition by 4 months to go over bugs and polish
@Nakatomi_Uk My official reply to this bug report from Bethesda was "Run save and do nothing for about 20 minutes. All dropped items in whole game should disappear and then new save should be smaller."
@djlard Because the items are saved in the save file if you picked them all up again the save file would go back up in size after so long. That was the same answer you got I found on a forum back nearly 15 years ago lol I just created a new save files every so often and saved often
@Northern_munkey Lets be fair they only had three generations and only over a decade to fix it. 😆🤣
@djlard That really is baffling how they have the balls to come with a "sollution" like that.
@DogPark I remember that happened to me as well. Had to go out and rent the non game of the year edition to get the quest to trigger that could cure vampirism. If you only had the GOTY edition you were stuck being a vampire forever.
