When it comes to playing the imminent Monster Hunter Wilds on a console, your best bet — by some distance — is the PS5 Pro.
This is what Digital Foundry's latest analysis boils down to, with the team having now examined the action RPG across all available hardware.
We did our own performance analysis of Wilds earlier this week, but it goes without saying that we're not experts like the lads at Digital Foundry. And so their report makes for an interesting read, as it outlines some clear improvements on Sony's expensive system.
The big winner is the game's 'Prioritize Framerate' mode. We've already been recommending this mode over the others because as the name suggests, it provides a much smoother, mostly 60 frames-per-second across the board.
However, on a base PS5, this setting results in a serious loss of image quality, with the resolution taking an especially nasty hit. The word muddy comes to mind.
On the Pro, though, this same mode looks way better, and runs even smoother. Digital Foundry says the improvement is down to a combination of beefier hardware (naturally) and Sony's PSSR upscaler. It's still not amazing — the resolution sticks to around 1080p internally — but the overall image quality is basically night and day.
It's a similar kind of story for the 'Balanced' and 'Prioritize Resolution' settings, both of which boast higher resolutions, better visual clarity, and higher frame rates than their base PS5 equivalents. Ray tracing is also implemented for these two modes on the Pro, which gives the game's graphics some welcome depth.
Still, even with all of these positives for PS5 Pro users, the bottom line is that none of the modes are perfect — much like we stated in our own analysis. There is no holy grail when it comes to Wilds — a setting that gives you both crisp image quality and a buttery smooth frame rate. And that's disappointing.
The hope, then, is that Capcom will be able to improve the game's performance through post-launch support. Further optimisation is going to be key here, because we've seen similar performance issues with Dragon's Dogma 2, which also runs on Capcom's RE Engine.
Will you be playing Monster Hunter Wilds on PS5 Pro? Did you expect better from the game in terms of performance? Be sure to hit 60fps in the comments section below.

I still need to play World lol
Will probably be grabbing this when the inevitable MR/story expansion releases in a year or two. Way more monsters at release, and it'll have whatever patches it's going to get to stabilize performance across all platforms.
@Ralizah I know it gets said a lot, but it is getting harder and harder to argue against buying games at a later date.
Cost less, they've been patched up, and you're probably getting some kind of DLC thrown into the mix.
The only real upside of buying a game at launch is to experience it alongside other players — which for some will be a big part of Monster Hunter games in particular.
I thought if there was any game that would make me buy a PS5 Pro it would be either Wilds or FF7 Part 3.
Seems like it will be Part 3 then.
This is pretty much the same deal as FF7R2. Base console looks too soft @ 60; otherwise your options are reasonable. I'm gonna be throwing a 3080ti and plenty of DLSS at Wilds in hopes of getting 50-60fps @ 4K High.
I legit bought a Pro mostly for this and Ghost of Yōtei.
Its not right that a game will require a PS5 Pro to effectively fix it and deliver a good experience, but I do think it will become much more common as we continue through this generation.
It looks acceptable enough to me on Pro, but it doesnt come close to a lot of games ive seen / played on the console.
I did have some interest in this game, and still do, but not as a fan of the series, so I think I will put it on the back burner and pick up at a later date when they have made improvements, if I get a lull.
Edit: In contrast to my negativity though, the game does run at more or less locked 60fps on Pro, so certainly isnt on my "never buy" list.
Removed - trolling/baiting
@Rich33 i agree and plus.. is no big diferences between the 2 consoles. Nothing much. Its a crap pro console. Only foolish people buy and who wants be better than others. Srry but i think this.
Didn't buy my Pro just for this game but it did play a part. Massive win for the Pro yet again though i'm sure haters will still moan and shout out false info for some reason. Once it hits midnight in 50 mins i shell start downloading the game ready for Friday.
@Vladspartan Someone's green with envy 😅
@Vladspartan Push Square is referencing a Digital Foundry video review that shows side-by-side comparisons of base vs. Pro in 60 fps mode. People need to stop with the constant "shilling" accusations every time some gaming news makes them upset
@Vladspartan
If you think that, you are not agreeing with me and clearly have no clue about what Im saying or about the capabilities of the Pro.
Im saying the game looks/runs awful on PS5, but acceptable on Pro.
In its current state I would not consider buying the game if I didnt have Pro.
I just dont think thats an acceptable state for the game to be in, mainly for base PS5 users, but also for Pro users.
I actually have a Pro, and a launch PS5 in my household and the difference is obvious, and sometimes night and day better than base PS5.
@ShogunRok Yup. The only real benefit is you get to be "part of the conversation," for whatever that's worth.
With Monster Hunter, though, the next mainline entry will be supported and actively discussed for years upon years, so even if you wait for a price dip and some patches, there's no real downside. You just get a more complete version at launch.
Live service games like Genshin with events and pulls and whatnot make sense to play soon after launch, but you're only paying for the microtransactions. So do, ironically, games that launch in an almost totally polished state that don't really go down in price for a long time, which barely exists outside of a few Nintendo staples.
Day one is largely just smaller devs for me now. Certain AA Japanese ones, and a few Western developers working on interesting, risky, or niche projects that need as much support as possible.
@DennisReynolds yea man. No ray tracing and 60fps = rip off. But it’s fine. I’m playing through back log now. Plenty of time to fix the game up before I get around to it anyway.
Good to hear it uses PSSR instead of FSR1. Worlds apart.
I still think the 40fps mode might be my preference. What scale of RT are they using? Just shadows?
Edit: it doesn't use RT shadows
I buy games day 1 and sell them when I'm done for most of my money back. As long as I am able to do that I'll keep buying day 1.
@Loamy Reflections as well
@Loamy
Definitely using RT reflections in bodies of water. They looked good too for what I saw (just not worth it to me as sub 60fps).
...it still looks like a vaseline smear versus a midrange PC.
Very grainy and horrible FSR1 on all consoles.
It's better with RT and PSSR here but not by much. Pretty unfortunate sadly.
@Loamy
Oh and if you are thinking about 40fps mode, Im pretty sure they said not to use uncapped fps as it doesn't have LFC so looks worse if you uncap it. At least I think thats what they said - I tend to not pay quite as much interest in sub 60fps modes.
@Vladspartan jealousy is a terrible thing
Given that it's fully Cross-play now, my PC Multi-pals and I voted for Wilds as the next new funzee a week ago. PoE2 was great while it lasted!
@Ralizah having played almost every monster hunter game I can't disagree more. It's a very very different experience playing from base versus starting from the dlc. It's a wildly different difficulty curve for one and most importantly the entire endgame loop of the base game is usually redundant for the dlc with the way the power scaling works. Especially so ever since world.
Playing monster hunter only from the dlc release may be smoother but it's really not the same experience intended by the developers in terms of content intake
@Rich33 yeah it's RT reflections, not shadows 👍 looks nice in the DF vid. I definitely wouldn't play at uncapped 40 even with LFC so it's a 🧢 for me! The performance mode seems great as well.
PSSR is huge for image quality. Crazy how much better/more stable it looks. Even when it's a minor upscale like this.
Edit: said "would" meant "wouldn't" 🤦
I played Rise on the Switch which was locked at 30fps and had no issue with it so I'm sure il be fine on the basd PS5 without the performance mode on.
@Loamy
Quite agree - said it many times, and probably to yourself (I forget lol) but its how PSSR looks during movement, even fast motion, that particularly impresses me.
Happy hunting!
@HRdepartment What? Ray Tracing is always a hefty cost and its why most RT on consoles is limited to 30fps modes. Expecting 60fps and RT in one mode in a game like this tells me you should buy a PC instead. Quite frankly outside of some exceptions RT has been a waste of time this Gen on consoles. Kingdom Come 2 has zero RT and guess what it looks far better then most games that have it.
Still not getting one.
Good try though.
The problem is not in the hardware, it's in the software and they will be fixing it.
I am not gonna throw 800 euros on a digital only machine to slightly solve the problem for them.
That's the equivalent of flushing money down the toilet.
The 30fps resolution mode was fine for me in the beta. I knew what I was getting into.
I may eventually get a ps6 in a few years and then I will have even better performance without spending all the additional money and having access to a new library of games.
@Loamy Wish Capcom opted for RT GI instead of reflections, you would see it more often and it might help out the dull lighting and brightness.
I thought the beta looked fine and reviews say it looks better. Not gonna get a Pro. Even if I wanted to, don’t have the money.
@DennisReynolds
100% agree with you. The only team I have seen do RT in a game that I have played, that makes a big difference without a massive sacrifice is Insomniac. They are wizards imo lol!
Generally, the RT is barely noticeable and/or comes with a massive sacrifice.
Though if I recall right (and I may not be), im sure DF said fortnight had decent RT in for their Pro upgrade - just not my type of game though.
Can’t justify a Pro but may get one in the future
Not for Monster Hunter though. Just not my jam
@Vladspartan it's enabling stuff £1000+ PCs aren't doing. For a crap pro console that's not too bad at around 600. You're saying not a big difference between the consoles. Literally this post shows there is.
Where are people getting midrange PCs are doing it much better. A 4060ti is only getting 1080p/60 and that's without RT and with a much better CPU. That's a £1000 system.
I've cancelled my preorder and will wait until they improve things. Also not a fan of the flat colour palette, looks so dull.. really hope they address that
I originally bought the PS5 pro as quick as possible just for MHWilds and I’m happy I did. So far i couldn’t really enjoy any NEW games that are PS5 Pro enhanced and had to just re-play some games I already finished on the base PS5. MHWilds will be the first brand new game for me to play where the difference to PS5 Pro will be felt.
I have no interest on buying a pro especially it’s an extra £100 for a disc drive, I’m sticking with my base PS5.
Just hope that the hunters don’t constantly talk like they do in Rise whenever they pick up item etc
Delighted with the pro, and these kind of games are why. I would struggle to play this on the OG ps5, but the pro offers acceptable performance for my needs.
I don’t intend to play this any time soon (got a huge backlog to work through first), but when I do play it, it’s gonna be on PS5 Pro. Unless the PS6 is out by then…
@DennisReynolds yeah man. Full RTGI, like in DD2, would be lovely. It seems like the GI they're using is much better quality in the balanced and quality modes at least.
@Dragoon1994 I'd recommend changing the voices to "Monster Hunter speak" like in the old games. I believe there was an option in World and Rise, not sure about this one. It's definitely less annoying to me than the shrill, fully-lined voices 😂
A pro console that can't look great and run 60fps at the same time😂if this is our standards of what's pro then god help us
Il be playing on PC, mainly because I don't need PS+ for multiplayer on PC and I LOVE doing hunts with randoms in MH!
I may be upgrading the PC earlier than originally planned depending on how well I can get it running
@Skynet04 I mean it does, unlike every other console Pro can play Wilds at 60fps at decent image quality. As DF said the best way to play Wilds is on the Pro.
Well, same as PS4 and Monster hunter world then.
Horribly optimised game that could barely keep up a constant frame rate back then, sounds the same now
