I think I read somewhere from Phil Spencer that Microsoft are not overly concerned with how many people buy an xbox series x , but more concerned with how many people can they get to join their game pass eco-system . its a different approach , but whether it will or succeed or not that remains to be seen .
Sony similarly offers PS Now on PC but the difference is its not the most viable way playing PlayStation games since you need a Internet connection.
Playstation brand is much stronger than Microsoft and Nintendo in the home market space , but its viable for Microsoft to try to get a foothold in the digital store space since Nintendo has the handheld marketplace on lock down .
as long as all 3 companies are healthy and still pumping out amazing content I am happy. Competition pushes quality games.
Last of us only gets the praise it gets because of how well the voice acting was and its cut-scenes. If we judge a videogame by its core , its gameplay then Last of us does not warrant a game of the decade . LOU aiming was fairly mediocre and the A.I was broken. my biggest issue playing it was there was no variety having to constantly grab a ladder or crate to get across a water section . If someone favourite genre are cinematic story driven games then I can understand LOU being peoples GOTD.
I think Backwards compatibility will be a driving factor for Microsoft and Sony Digital Services for Game Pass and PS Now. If a very small user base only used the feature it doesn't really matter that much because having a very good brand image to the public eye is much more beneficial to the companies as it puts them in a positive light , But more than that it drives new demands to Dormant Ips people have been crying out for for years for either a sequel or a remake ie , Dino Crisis , Legends of Dragoon , MegaMan Legends etc..
Remember also as Technology increases and devs are pressured to create bigger and more realistic worlds , development time increases and we already have to wait up to 3-5 years for the next big installment of the most anticipated games , we need the likes of Indies and BC to fill in those gaps .
