@Bleachedsmiles No, it's subscription based model either way. For Halo they get more money out of making it free to play rather than locking it behind GP but the same style of monetization is used for either model. Like Spencer has said the end goal is to make money from the back end. If you think giving up $60 for a smaller amount of money each month is going to get you the same quality and type of games then you're delusional. Even if games are still available at full price as well as subscription if the majority don't buy the game and the developers know this it still IMPACTS the games development style. Get it?
There's Youtube video where someordinarygamers literally goes through his Ps4 games and shows how the majority of them can be played offline with the disc without a day one patch. Something you actually cannot do with a new Xbox console and BC games.
What's the value in owning games? Because you can play them at any time in your life, sell, or trade. And please dude how did Sony brute force their way into the top position? Getting a year of timed exclusivity on a handful of brand new IP's isn't it. They became the top dog by being the platform that had the widest variety of great games. They certainly didn't do it by buying every 3rd party developer and publisher they can and locking massive multiplatform IP's to their platform like someone else is doing. Why do you even come to a PS site when you're clearly an Xbox fan and do nothing but play Xbox defense force in every article?
@Bleachedsmiles So Halo going from a full price game packaged with tons of multiplayer content to a free 2 play game that launched with 4 maps and barely any modes but plenty of cash shop items isn't indicative of their push to subscription based content? Spencer has been saying for months now that the plan is to make money off the backend of games rather than upfront costs. Your argument for hardware makes no sense. You still need some hardware whether you're streaming from a phone or TV. Most games actually do not require day one patches to actually play them and patch servers will be up for a long time. It's hilarious that xbox fanboys are so into the kool-aid they're now talking bad about OWNING something. And don't give me the full price bs. Most people buy a handful of games at most at full price since they go on sale so quick nowadays.
Either way the reality is Sony has dominated gaming by putting out quality content and gamers have chosen their platform. MS is just trying to brute force control by using conglomerate money to buy up everything. No console maker is perfect, but only MS is trying to Spotify the industry and doesn't care what happens to it as long as they're in control. When even ex Xbox executives are questioning what they're doing its a problem.
So far none of the digital stores has an answer for this. Steam, Eshop, PSN, etc. all have these shovelware asset flip games constantly being thrown onto them and unless they break any rules there's really no reason to shut them down. Unless you have something like that GoW ripoff that got taken down off Xbox It could be worse, at least the PS store doesn't have dozens of crappy porn games hogging up the new releases chart every week like Steam does.
Either most of these games are really going to be delayed until 2024 or these companies are setting themselves up for failure. There is just TOO much releasing in 2023 at this point. There are going to be some major games overshadowed by others leading to disappointing sales.
@Constable_What That is just complete nonsense. They do even worse crap like Forza Motorsport 7, a game that was only released at the end of 2017, was pulled from the digital store and Gamepass not even 4 full years after release. At the end of the day I don't blame either company. If no one is playing the game why waste resources on servers? I feel like this is another thing people complain about yet no one here has played any of these games in years.
@Northern_munkey I agree with you. However the interesting thing is the ones mostly bringing PC up are the doom and gloom PS "fans" that can't accept PC is like a side market now. There are quite a few obvious Xbox fanboys that troll here like Bleached, Ion, Marts, and a few others because they're so upset over MS putting their games on PC they have to rub it in when Sony does the same. Just let them be cringey and don't take the bait though.
@Milktastrophe This. These people make no sense. If you want a high end PC buy it and play the games. If you want a cheaper console to play games then buy that. The whining that Sony is diluting their brand is so idiotic considering most PC gamers only PC game and were never going to buy a console in the first place. Why they care someone else on another platform can play the same game as you is so petty. It's like looking at a dude driving a Lamborghini and whining that there's no point in driving anymore because you have Prius, even though they both get the job done. The other annoying thing is Sammy purposely posts these pointless articles just to rile the same people up. Wow Sony updated a website, incredible.
The crazy thing is the sites that have tested the PC version on high end PCs with everything maxed don't look that much better than the Ps5 version. So for a $500 console the Ps5 port is great and you're not missing out much on graphical fidelity.
@Bleachedsmiles And do you know why it was a PS2 exclusive? Because MS chose not to help fund it and Sony did. They actually went to MS first but they didn't believe Rockstar could go from 2d to 3d. So no its not as simple as Sony just paid for exclusivity.
@Bleachedsmiles Ps1 had barely any timed exclusives and none were already proven massive franchises. The major one being RE1 and that got ported to Saturn a year later. It's funny how the Xbox fanboys always bring up Sega when there's very little to no info of Sony paying developers to keep games off other platforms. The reality is Playstation was far more popular than the Saturn so they chose to not make those games on that platform. Games like Resident Evil 2 never got a Saturn release because the console was weak and they saw no money in porting it.
Also yes MS did start the timed exclusivity war. The GTA4 DLC fiasco opened the floodgates for what we have now. Then came CoD DLC, Mass Effect, Titanfall, ROTR, etc. and the plethora of "console launch exclusives" they showed at their e3 event. Because an exclusive mode is so much worse than tons of maps, either way that option wasn't on the table when MS was paying them otherwise they would have done it. Yes those games sold better when Ps3 was vastly outsold by 360, but it wasn't 80% like FF15. The last gen was completely lopsided in Ps4 sales. Either way they both indulge in it, but one thing Sony hasn't done yet is buy up a major 3rd party publisher and keep major multiplatform games off other platforms. Until they do that one is far worse than the other.
I love Japanese made games more than Western games by a mile, but man their dialogue can be cringe. Thank god FF7 already has a great script to build off of.
@Tharsman Lol you don't even know what you're talking about. The original reboot of Tomb Raider came out in 2013 for PC, PS3, and 360. The next gen consoles weren't even out yet and even so the definitive version came out for both Ps4 and Xbox One the same time. Rise of the Tomb Raider was the only temporary exclusive because MS paid $100 million for one year of exclusivity. And MS started this temporary exclusive nonsense during the 360 generation with the GTA4 timed exclusive DLC, CoD DLC, and plenty others.
@Richnj The big difference is Sony mostly does timed exclusivity where MS is now full throttle into complete exclusivity with their publisher buyouts. One is obviously far worse than the other. Also full exclusive games like Final Fantasy 7 are series that are overwhelmingly bought on Playstation consoles. Even when MS was dominating with the 360 FF13 sold 80%+ of its copies on Ps3 and that has stayed consistent throughout the years. Games like Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Doom, etc. will now be fully exclusive to a platform where they were the least selling platform previously. Sony is arguing they can't make good first party content to compete so they just buy up great 3rd party content to combat this which is completely true.
Microsoft does the same thing even worse in most cases because of their publisher buyouts. They also pay publishers money to keep Gamepass versions the only cloud streaming version of said game. Also notice all those "console launch exclusive" games from their e3 conference? Those all have the same legal jargon that keep them off other platforms/services. And to those bringing up Sega and Playstation, what are you even talking about? The Saturn and Dreamcast failed not because Sony was paying publishers to keep games off their platforms, but because no one bought their consoles so they saw no reason to put games on their platforms.
@IonMagi So you're paying 800+ for worse performance than a Ps5. Good move. Like FindMe said it has a gimpy i5, half the RAM, and less storage. Even if you upgrade the RAM the CPU will bottleneck it. Imagine paying that much money for 1080p only gaming.
@IonMagi Want to list the site? You're either full of it or don't understand the specs. A TUF F15 with a 3050ti is $1200 so there is 0 chance a 3070 is cheaper. Keep digging yourself deeper though.
@IonMagi There is no place on the planet you can buy an 3070 laptop for $825 which would be the USD equivalent. You are just talking nonsense at this point.
@IonMagi Go and try to find a RTX 2080 laptop for less than $1300. You can't, 2080 mobile version came out in 2019 and either way it's high end and still extremely good. Also it's a GPU, do you even know what you're talking about?
@IonMagi I checked before posting it's 52 on the GB store. Also you said a laptop with a 3060 earlier and now you change to a 2080 which is much more expensive and gonna come well over twice the cost of a PS5. And lastly you seriously trying to argue 3rd party sellers against official stores and the PS store lol? Good lord you are reaching so hard. Might as well pirate if you're going to use gray market sites. At least now we know you're just a troll that isn't even here for PlayStation news.
@IonMagi You are seriously the most obnoxiously negative person on this site. Miles Morales Ultimate Edition is 52 euro from the PS store right now. Also a 800 euro laptop with a gimpy mobile 3060 isn't even going to outperform a Ps5 so you're paying more money for no reason. And I can tell you don't even PC game because no PC game sales are not as great as you claim. Horizon Zero Dawn has never gone below $25 on Steam yet it's been $10 on PS and given away for free on PS+. It's just funny how some of you act like your PS5 version is inferior because some of us spend an insane amount of money on a PC. If Sony put out a super powerful more expensive Ps5 you wouldn't even pay for it so it's complete hypocrisy. You want $2000 PC performance from a $500 PS5 which is just something impossible to do.
This is a problem on every single store front. Steam, Nintendo, Xbox etc. are all flooded with these trash games. So far none of them have figured out a solution. Nintendo Eshop and Steam are especially bad.
@WallyWest You couldn't be more wrong. Those things are all prevalent because people will pay for them. Me being someone who doesn't indulge in any of those things, but doesn't care if other people do has no effect. It's like saying I'm adding to the dug epidemic for not caring if my neighbor blows all their money up their nose even if I don't do or sell drugs. If you need everything regulated for you there's a problem.
Interesting you bring up horse armor considering it was Microsoft who told Bethesda to price the horse armor $2.50 when they originally were going to price it much lower and got the ball rolling for the predatory tactics we have today.
@UltimateOtaku91 I'm with you, I don't understand the ridiculous hate either and I bet most people are just following the overreaction trend. How is it any worse than someone buying a stupid skin in a video game that is only going to be around for a few years at most? If people want to waste their money it's not my problem.
@WallyWest Absolutely false. Spencer lied like usual back in 2021 where he tried to play good guy, but then this April MS told Bloomberg they're looking into NFT's, cryptocurrency, and other "emerging technologies". That's a direct quote. They rejected NFT games in Minecraft because they wouldn't make money from them and it would deter from the money they make from user generated content. Every major corporation is looking into NFT's.
