Sucks. No Metal Gear, no Legacy of Kain, no Mortal Kombat, all in one place.
Yes, you might be able to find a still working PS2 and PS3 second-handed, but for how long?
All those titles will soon be lost.
PS4's are easy to find. So I honestly would've cared more about legacy BC than PS4 BC.
I can't say I'm surprised. RE2 classic was essentially 4 different games into one, REmake2 was barely 1,5. They claimed they wanted to simplify the storylines to help make things more canon, but the new storyline clashes between the two characters even more.
They also changed Jill's actress, breaking canonicity with REmake for no reason.
@pushf I'm not really disregarding any of that. Furthermore: "1. Sony enjoys reselling PS1 and PS2 games on their store." Yes, and if I would be able to rebuy my Legacy of Kain, Metal Gear Solid and Mortal Kombat collection, that'd be fine. But I can't. /flawed "2. If Sony added BC for PS1 and PS2, it would be through emulation which is flawed" Perhaps, but oftentimes it even better. Easier to add higher resolutions, higher framerates, and whatnot. ePSXe is really not bad these days. It also circumvents licensing issues for music. "3. PS3 BC would be way too difficult to implement." They made it, they should be able to find some sort of solution. PS3 emulation is getting better and that's created by people who didn't have the blueprints. 4. You forgot PSNOW =P Which is also a flawed solution because streaming isn't ideal, it doesn't have every game and surely Sony's PS3farm is prone to die out at one point
As for PS4 compatibility; there I don't agree. People who don't care about PSX, PS2 and PS3 because 'I don't buy a new console to play old games" fail to see that as soon as the PS5 is here, PS4 will be regarded as old as well. And the fact that at this late point in the development cycle full 4BC out of the box isn't guaranteed, certainly points to it not being easy either.
Yes, Sony, I understand making consoles isn't an easy endeavour, but your actions, halfway solutions and failure to communicate about it certainly point to the fact that it isn't a priority for you. And to my kind of gamer, that is wrong.
@pushf I understand they have a similar architecture which would make it more easy. But Sony making awkward decisions in the past isn't really my concern, that's on them. I'm talking about user experience and business models.
Like do you actually want to give the consumer what they obviously crave (even though certain statistics might claim BC isn't that often used, it's obviously an issue for a lot players), or do you just not care? The presentation not adressing 1-3 BC at all certainly points to the latter. If they really wanted to, they'd find a way to overcome the technical difficulties.
The point I was trying to make is that I don't understand why people fuss over the PS4 BC and not the other consoles. Disregarding your personal, individual experience (I want to play this or that game etc), every argument you make for PS4 compatibility, holds up for the entire catalog.
I don't understand why BC with PS4 is important. The moment PS5 games are dropping, no one is going to bother with the PS4.
Except for all those who like to play an entire series in a row, play retrogames, are collectors, or just people who would like to see their entire library carried over and sorted in neat little folders so they know all their previous purchases aren't essentially worthless. But those people, like me, were hoping for 1-5 BC.
That would've made sense. BC for just the one generation, not so much. So collectors are supposed to keep the PSX, PS2, PS3 but starting from the PS4, you can sell the consoles? Wouldn't the opposite have made more sense? Sell the oldest consoles and keep the more recent generations?
I'm fine with the graphics as they are. I'm mostly annoyed that between the updated ps3 version that is only semi hd with some questionable lights here and there and the ps4 edition which is the old ps2 version in 4/3 with bad pal frame rate, there's no 'ultimate' version. Wouldn't it be easier to just take the ps3 version, tweak the lights, make it hd and release that to ps4/ps5?

Re: Sony Backtracks PS3, PS Vita Online Store Closures
I might move on from a console, because it's slow, has a small hard drive, confusing store and ridiculously slow wifi.
But not the games. I don't care about PS3 that much, but I do want to be able to play the games I (digitally) bought.

Legacy of Kain collection remastered.

@Haywire
I'll still get it though, obviously =D

Re: Sony's Poor PS5 Backwards Compatibility Clarity Prompts Damning Headlines
@Haywire
PSNOW, partial PS4BC, remakes and emulated remasters are really all conflicting streams of the same business model.
Choose one Sony, and do it right.

Re: Sony Will Launch PS5 Pro Alongside PS5 in 2020, Says Rumour, But We're Not Convinced
I'd rather they release a legacy console, one that plays PS1, PS2, PS3 and Vita. With a new OS, decent Wifi and no more silly regions.
