@nessisonett this is what has kept me from preordering. I haven’t gotten a 4 yet, but remoting to my Vita is viable to me. If 5 could, I’d put down for that, but should 4 get that price cut I’ve been itching for the last few years, it’s a better option for me. I play portably nearly 100% of the time.
I’m from the west, and I think this was a stupid change, since the beginning. Culturally, in Japan (And other places), where Playstation originated, the circle (maru) symbol is used as a yes/confirm/correct/good signifier. Whereas the cross (X, batsu) symbol is used as a no/cancel/incorrect/bad symbol.
Look at the Sanrio character Badtz-Maru for example. That penguin guy is always shown with X’s and O’s. Or any Japanese test or signage informing you of what is correct and what is incorrect. This page explains how Japanese teachers mark answers and gives some insight into JP vs US usage:
Based on those ideas, and probably wanting to differentiate the button placement with Nintendo, Sony US changed the meaning of the buttons (and the pronunciation of X (cross to “ecks”, it’s in the naming conventions).
Now that Playstation is barely Japanese anymore (and I argue are more Western focused [where’s Japan Studio?]), they’ve gone all in. Things have been shifting this way behind the scenes since the PS2 era.
But really, why not have full button mapping? I think it has to do with ensuring it remains functional. It can be a pain to test and ensure it works in all regards. The designers need to consider that from the start. The text writers need to change the way button prompt messages are used. We used to have so many issues trying to stick to naming conventions when localizing from JP to EN, with people wanting to say press the (name the button) button message that usually ended up like:
It used to be a huge mess. Now they are trying to avoid that, but are taking the easy way out. With the Playstation brand now being more Western than Japanese (ads, sales, player base, dev base), they’s have a harder time switching western players on the configuration.
But they could (and should) be using button mapping already.
However big the consoles are, don’t stick them IN your cramped entertainment cabinet. It might have been ~okay~ pre PS3 era, but most people haven’t learned that since PS3/360, our consoles need room to breath. Especially now.
So what the hell did they submit to certification? Last year’s game? Just to hit the street date that can’t be missed? And then add in the new stuff after?
It’s a check box on a submission form. There are actually many error like this all over the psn store. Check your download list on psp and vita, you might find some ps3 games Or dlc that say you can Download them to your portable. Don’t do it though. You might need to format your memory stick after.
@Oh_fiddlesticks there’s definitely some tension about it. But I think the sentiments of the developers are in the right spot. And the guy at E3 playing the shakuhachi, Cornelius Boots, is a master at the instrument. https://www.komuso.com/people/people.pl?person=1849
At first sight, obviously the question would be why is this white person representing this game/music/culture? However, most people end it there without looking into why.
I think the developers and the musician grew up loving these experiences and have poured there life into them to share with others. Not taking for their own. Retweeting, in a way.
Ok... so what are the numbers? If Bravely Second got... uhhh... second place due to a clearance sale from Argos, how many copies could have been sold there? On top of that, how many copies of all games is the public buying overall? Is this why GTAV, FIFA, and COD are always up there?
Wow, if they are being truthful with the timing, that’s cutting it close on the operations/production schedule. If it didn’t go gold now, it either would have been a delay or to keep schedule they would have gone forward with manufacturing with a required day-1 patch. The chance of getting a day-1 patch is still up there though, as far as we know.
@RedShirtRod I’m in this camp too. I don’t typically watch the charts, but have noticed the single player games drop out quicker and the longstanding GTA/COD/FIFA show up again. I’m curious to see the numbers for this over the next few weeks. No doubt well deserved, but how many people still wanting it that haven’t gotten it?
It was an OK showing. Some really cool stuff and a lot of fluff. Some of those trailers were far too long and just didn’t get to the point. There’s still a lot we don’t know and a lot of that presentation told me 2021 is the year to check out the PS5, not 2020. Did the presentation meet my expectations? It was about what I expected from Sony.
12/15 hardest were the original vs sequel. It was easy enough to cross out the once that weren’t the franchise, but knowing the differences between first game and second game could be a crapshoot unless there was a distinct element that would prove one way or the other.
I just hope it isn’t a blank slate... Also, I hope they reveal stuff that has a tangible release date, and isn’t a “here’s something that will release on this platform (3 years from now...)“
So, what should next-gen gameplay look like? Or does it even look like something? What is being expected? Or what are we being told we should expect?
We aren’t going to see a major leap in graphics this gen, at least not at first. But that isn’t gameplay anyway. All last gens didn’t jump right away. And even when it it did improve, did that make the gameplay that much better?
We’re at a point where console gaming is PC gaming (with some caveats). But instead of buy the next best graphics card, we will buy the next console because that’s where the new games will be releasing.
Graphics can continue to improve (with diminishing returns), and they’ll take longer to develop for and cost more, so we’ll see fewer big games, farther between, and from fewer devs. Indies have really filled in that spot that the bigger studios have ignored. You’ll notice that those indies aren’t the fanciest graphics, but they get the job done to deliver the gameplay. Many of them play so smooth and are very satisfying and don’t make you sit through a 20 minute movie so you can learn to press a button.
What can take gameplay to the next level? Triple-jumps? Shooting 5 bullets in multiple directions at the same time? Tracking an encumbrance stat?
Also I wanted to add, let’s stop pretending Playstation (and parent Sony) is still a Japanese company. It’s been at least a decade since US/UK brand marketing/publishing and dev mindset took over. Square is holding on, and Kojima still has a foot in the door, but kinda took a step back this gen. Not saying that there aren’t any, just that they’ve been overshadowed quite a bit. Name Sony’s next Japanese game, and don’t you even start it with Ghosts and end it Tsushima (game looks good though, and I like that they got one of the masters of the Shakuhachi to perform for the reveal of the game, even though that whole presentation was super weird).
