Re: Square Enix Layoffs Underway in US and Europe as Restructure Begins

@Rmg0731 "Purge japan developers of western toxins" tbh Japanese devs needed to learn as well, look what happened to them during the PS3/360 era and they actually bounced back starting the PS4/xbone, however, I think Chinese devs with the likes of Genshin, Star Rail and all their upcoming games beat them to it. Still not a doom and gloom as both can enjoy successes, even Korean devs had a nice start aside from their usual MMOs, Stellar Blade leading the charge.

and since no journo would ever report it as they really want to slant the Sony SE relationship, even though Nintendo had more exclusive deals to SE than Sony:

"In the HD (High-Definition) sub-segment, consolidated net sales increased compared with the previous fiscal year due to the release of titles including “FINAL FANTASY XVI,” “FINAL FANTASY PIXEL REMASTER,” “DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince,” and “FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH.”

On the sales front it was actually "YoY decline in MMO and Games for Smart Devices/PC Browser sub-segment sales", plus "weak performances by existing titles" that brought things down, NOT the big new HD titles.

Final Fantasy 14 in particular, saw a "notable decline in MMO revenues, which were down -11% year over year".

Overall FY results:

  • Net Sales: +3.8%
  • Operating income: -26.6%

Important to note that whilst operating income is down, SE's still profitable. The way some talk is as if they're not making profit at all.

Again, SE attributes the decline in operating income to;

  • Decline in MMO
  • Decline in Mobile
  • Decline in PC
  • "Higher development cost amortization" (development costs carried over from prior months or years)
  • "Content production account valuation losses."
  • "Advertising expenses"

So despite the sales of the bigger new titles being enough to meet SE's "expectations" and marginally increase YoY sales, the decline in sales elsewhere, plus higher associated costs across all production inc the big titles, still contributed to a decline in overall operating income.

Next is the -70% profit number some are touting. This is net profit or "profit attributable to owners", which includes additional costs.

The biggest reason net profit is down so much is predominantly as SE cancelled a bunch of projects, leading to a unique "extraordinary loss".

"Profit attributable to owners of the parent amounted to ¥14,912 million, ($95.5m) a decrease of 69.7% from the prior fiscal year, partly due to the recognition of ¥22,087 million ($141.4m) in losses on disposal of content as an extraordinary loss."

Had it not been for these project cancellations, the net profit would have been ¥37,000 million ($237m), making for a YoY decline of -10% instead of this big -70% number, which was mostly project cancellations.

So what's the takeaway?

It's that overall sales are up and SE is still profitable, in part due to the big new titles."

@Radekbejbl1 "get Sakaguchi back because it's very clear things went downhill when he left." I respect the man but when he made FF The Spirits Within, a movie I liked but tanked at the box office that almost caused Squaresoft to go bankrupt which is why they merged with Enix(also thanks to the success of KH1 and I think it was FFX at that time)

And Sakaguchi is happy with where he is now why ask him to come back? Still waiting for that Terra Battle console port which reached the milestone on his kickstarter btw, o wait, he took the money and ran lol

I think there is NO ISSUE to those who played on Steam and PSN is available in their countries.. however I feel for those in some parts of the world in Asia for example where the only PSN accounts are only HK, SG, JPN (I think Indonesia has it as well) however for those in the Philippines they sell PlayStation products there but creating accounts on the PS4/5 automatically puts one in the HK region.

@TruestoryYep really? so Persona 3 Reload had a smaller marketing budget? Didn't ATLUS plastered that game everywhere same goes for that New Yakuza game? Also since I never mentioned it, I am glad those that sold 1M, that's great. Any title that gets released nowadays would be glad to reach those numbers. Even Unicorn Overlord celebrated selling over 500K
