@Old-Red may I ask what makes you think mental illness is a factor here? I help people with neurological disorders; autism, Asperger's, schizophrenia, etc. But none of them would utter death threats as they know it's wrong (well, the schizophrenia might be a little different, but that's entirely another matter). Could it be that these people are just c***ts? Claiming to have a disorder sounds like an easy way out.
