Re: Poll: Did You Get a PS5?

@thefourfoldroot They are in the activity cards. If you click on the activity card for an area there are videos for each puzzle piece/artifact. But it only shows the ones you need so if you already have them all....

Re: Sony Unsure if PS Plus Collection Will Expand with More Games

evan23

@Hoodie718 I don't know if all the games in the collection use it but doesn't "Game Boost" just mean they aren't locking the clocks back to PS4 levels?

They sell it like some revolutionary technology but it seems more like marketing to me. The games with "Game Boost" run faster because they are running on faster hardware while the games without game boost are locked to slower clocks.

I can't guarantee that is true but, if it is, it would explain why some bc titles load faster on xbox. It is because those titles are getting the benefit of the faster cpu's ability to decompress the textures on xbox but are locked to slower clock speeds on ps5 so only benefit from the ssd.

PS. In no way is this me saying one console is better than another. Please don't take it that way.

Re: Poll: Did You Get a PS5?

evan23

@Ashkorsair I had the same feeling with the controller for the first few hours but after the adjustment I really like it. It fits me ergonomically better than any other controller I have tried but it does feel odd at first.

@zupertramp As someone who had a preorder canceled a week after placing it, I think having a backup order isn't a terrible plan.

Re: Amazon UK Responds to Stolen PS5 Delivery Claims

evan23

@NEStalgia "if I were spending that kind of money on a gaming device I'd get a monster PC....and not have to deal with backorders and scalpers."

Except for the fact the all the high-end GPUs you would need for a monster gaming PC are also in high-demand and being grabbed up by the scalpers

Err...when I was comparing last week to this week I was trying to compare the PS5 launch in some parts of the world to the PS5 launch in other parts of the world. I wasn't trying to compare the PS5 to the series X/S. Although, it is funnier the second way.

Re: Poll: Did You Get a PS5?

evan23

I have one and I am enjoying it. That being said, there are quite a few software related issues at least some of which probably should have been fixed pre-launch.

I would describe it as imperfect but full of potential.

As for the acquisition itself. I was lucky to be online and watching when the pre-orders dropped by surprise. I still spent hours going through checkout multiple times before I managed to secure one.

Re: 10 Things PS5 Needs to Improve

evan23

@Zeke68 I was curious so I did a little more research and it seems like you are right, some TVs do have issues with VRR+HDR. Yet one more difficult to find information on spec about modern TVs. sigh

Re: 10 Things PS5 Needs to Improve

evan23

@nessisonett To be clear, I am not saying that Sony should not add support or that nobody uses 1440p.

I was just clarifying that the number is probably quite a lot smaller than 6.7% of users. I would be shocked if it wasn't less than 1%.

That being said, it is probably still a lot of people in absolute terms.

Re: 10 Things PS5 Needs to Improve

evan23

@nessisonett That is true but 6.7% of steam users using 1440p doesn't mean 6.7% of Playstation users do.

1440p is a great resolution for a gaming monitor. But most PS5's are hooked up to a TV so we are talking about a small fraction of that 6.7%.

Re: 10 Things PS5 Needs to Improve

evan23

@Slippship Well, I think once you do get it you will find you have a console with a ton of potential and cool features but also a console in which the UI severely lacks polish and has some obvious missing features.

It is not something I would describe as a failure, it just feels.....unfinished.

Re: 10 Things PS5 Needs to Improve

evan23

So many things:

  • ALLM - This is super convenient and it should be able to be implemented
  • VRR - A must have in my opinion
  • Better library handling for disc-based games - The behavior of browsing your library and disc-based games is quite odd. It adds the games to your library even if they aren't installed if you own any DLC. When the games are installed, if you try to launch them, it doesn't really know what to do so it tries to get you to buy the game instead of just asking you to insert the disc.
  • Better library handling for games available on both ps4 and ps5 - This is just a mess.
  • The ability to remove "Explore" - I hate this with a furious passion.
  • The ability to reorganize the section at the top - At least provide the ability to pin things in place and remove things that aren't needed.
  • Offload storage of PS5 games to external storage - It is absurd that you can't do this.
  • More control over HDMI-CEC - It is basically on or off. I would love to be able to control apps over CEC without having the console turn-on when I switch to it's input.

While this is certainly a bit of complaining, it is likely that all of these could be implemented in software.

Re: Publisher of Poor XIII Remake Seems to Miss the Point with Apology Post

evan23

First, I think the new art style completely destroys what made this game interesting in the first place. It has been turned into a sub-par look-alike.

That being said, the expectation that they would issue an update re-doing the entire art-style of the game seems somewhat unrealistic at this point. They would have to remake the game again.

So, all they really can do at this point is fix the technical issues.

On the other hand, blaming the pandemic for a poor quality product is totally unacceptable from my perspective. They chose to release a game knowing it was full of bugs. They could have delayed the release until it was of sufficient quality.

Issues like this are why I never criticize a video game for delays. I would much rather see a delay than a crap product released.

Re: Hands On: Best Uses of PS5 DualSense Controller So Far

evan23

Even if you put aside all the amazing things this controller can do, it is still a fantastic controller. While I found it a bit alien at first now that I have some time with it I don't want to go back to other controllers. It feels great in the hand, the weight is in all the right places. Really well done.

As a side note, I have a pro-tip for those who haven't played Astro's Playroom yet. If you mute the mic, you don't have to blow on the controller.

If I never have to blow on another controller again I will be happier for it. You would think that they would have learned the lesson from Nintendo that people don't want to blow on their device/controller.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 350

evan23

@Wazeddie22 I would wait on FFXV for a week if you have other things to play. That speedup is worth it.

To all those whose PS5 launch date is next week, I hope you are able to secure one on Thursday. Over here, a lot of people who pre-ordered are still waiting on delivery.

Good luck to all!

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 350

evan23

I finished the main playthrough of Astro's last night. I am not usually a trophy hunter but I think I am going to try to get the Platinum for Astro's this weekend.

I have also started playing Spider-Man remastered. I made it quite far in the original but never actually finished it.

I started playing AC:Valhalla earlier in the week but I think I am going to put that on hold for a bit. I like it so far, but I feel like this game is going to take a big block of dedicated time and there are a bunch of things I want to play right now. Also, maybe that will give them a little time to fix some of the worst bugs.

Re: Talking Point: What Are Your First Impressions of PS5?

evan23

@deathaxe Those USB adapters/enclosures are very hit and miss. I was originally planning to go that route but I couldn't find anything that really was reliable. I ended up returning them and just using a prebuilt external SSD.

That being said, I just disconnected my drive on the PS5. I will wait and see if they patch the issue for a few days.

I am with you on Cyberpunk. I will be waiting for the next-gen updates.

Re: Talking Point: What Are Your First Impressions of PS5?

evan23

@madcow78 As for the database thing, it is something that is happening to some people intermittently. It doesn't happen every time and hasn't happened to me yet. That being said, reports of the issue are fairly widespread. I am thinking of disconnecting my external storage for now. Honestly, I have enough to play without it in the short-term.

Re: Talking Point: What Are Your First Impressions of PS5?

evan23

It arrived!!! Amazon actually did deliver it on launch day.

Some early impressions:

  • It is freaking huge
  • The interface is a radical change and I don't know how to use it yet
  • The interface looks really appealing and makes it feel like it really is a new system unlike the xbox
  • The Game Library is much much improved. The ability filter by source is something I have been wanting on the PS4 forever
  • There are some other oddities like I can't figure out how to play Hozizon Zero Dawn. Because it groups it together with the "Art of Horizon Zero Dawn" it always launches that instead of the game.
  • I can't figure out how to install DLC or see what DLC is already installed

Re: Talking Point: What Are Your First Impressions of PS5?

evan23

Mine has been marked as "Shipped" since this morning and it claims it will arrive today but I am pretty skeptical at this point since it isn't out for delivery. It is Amazon and they are delivering until 11 PM now in my area so it is theoretically possible which means I will be checking that tracking number every 10 minutes until 11 PM only to be disappointed.

I would say at least I know I am getting one but until I have it my hands I won't be convinced.

@jmac1686 Did you figure out how to fix that or are you stuck with the PS4 versions still?

Re: PS5 Doesn't Have a Web Browser

evan23

I know some people make use of the browser but if I am being honest I would prefer my gaming console didn't come with a browser.

I am way more concerned with the inability to transfer games saves and ps5 games to external devices. It sounds like they are investigating add those things on in future updates though.

There are some other things I am disappointed in but are hardly deal breakers for me like the loss of themes and the somewhat disappointing implementation of backwards compatibility. Honestly, if Microsoft hadn't done such an amazing job with backwards compatability, I probably would have been happy with what Sony has done.

Compared to those things, the loss of the browser seems pretty inconsequential. Especially since I see it as a benefit, personally.

Re: PS5's Limited SSD Storage Space Cannot Be Upgraded at Launch

evan23

@Shinnok789 I don't understand how anyone thought that the entire amount of the hard drive was going to be available for use. That wasn't a reasonable expectation to begin with. Some is lost in the GB<->GiB conversion and some is needed for the operating system and cache. This was pretty much always going to be the case.

Re: The Best 4K TVs for PS5

evan23

@oldpeculiar That link doesn't talk about VRR at all unless I am missing it. It talks about high fps.

VRR isn't about high fps. It is about the display dynamically matching the refresh rate. Where it helps the most is with lower, inconsistent frame rates.

One of the digital foundry videos talks about VRR and how impressive it is. I think it is the one on gears 5 towards the end.

Re: The Best 4K TVs for PS5

evan23

@edulanza10 I am not sure about the phones but for the TVs, I am pretty sure both Sony and Vizio are getting the panels from LG.

@Tchunga you could make that same argument about buying next generation consoles. To me, buying a set right now to connect to a PS5 and not getting something that supports VRR/4K/HDR would be crazy. VRR is the feature I think people are seriously overlooking. It will basically offer tear free gaming even when frame rates dip.

Again, not saying you should upgrade just to get those features, that is a whole different story.

Re: The Best 4K TVs for PS5

evan23

@Tchunga HDMI 2.1 isn't only about 4K@120. It also adds things like VRR, ALLM and eARC. Those add value in their own right.

Not saying you should upgrade just to get those things but if you are buying now I would definitely make sure the TV has HDMI 2.1 or wait until you can get a TV that does.

Re: The Best 4K TVs for PS5

evan23

@edulanza10 Samsung doesn't make OLED TVs because LG owns the patents and Samsung won't buy panels from LG. In fact, they sued them over it trying to invalidate LG's patents so they could compete.

That being said, is OLED better than QLED? That is not an answerable question. It depends what you priorities are. There are pros and cons between LED TVs and OLED TVs.

My primary point was stating the QLED is Samsung's take on OLED is simply not true.

Re: The Best 4K TVs for PS5

evan23

@AdamNovice Unless you literally don't have anything to play it on right now I would wait until you can get a monitor with HDMI 2.1 for reasonable money.

Re: The Best 4K TVs for PS5

evan23

@TheFrenchiestFry If we are talking about TVs, you are most likely either going to get 4K+HDR or 1080p without HDR. 1080p TVs with HDR are not very common.

If I was buying a TV for gaming I would 100% be looking at a set that could, at minimum, do 4K+HDR.

More than that, I think VRR is one of the biggest game changers from a gaming perspective and I doubt you will find a 1080p TV with VRR.

You might find some gaming monitors with those specs but most of them will rely on DP to deliver them which will be a problem for these consoles which need HDMI 2.1.

Of course, that assumes you are buying a new TV to begin with. If you are using an existing TV, it certainly isn't essential you run out and get a 4K model for your new console.

Re: The Best 4K TVs for PS5

evan23

"QLED is Samsung's take on OLED"

Uhh...no. This is totally not true. Samsung QLED is some creative marketing for Samsung's upper-end LED TVs that have a filter applied to them. Samsung QLED is nothing like OLED or really even competitive too it except in the broadest sense that all TVs share. Arguably, Samsung's QLED TVs aren't even really QLED.

That being said, I am not saying you shouldn't buy a Samsung QLED if that is your preference but calling it Samsung's version of OLED is completely silly. It is just an LED-LCD TV with most of the same pros and cons that come with other LED TVs on the market.
