Re: Sony Boss Says It's 'Learned a Lot' from PC Player Pushback

@LogicStrikesAgain

Still find it a minor inconvencience when all this can be circumvented by a 2 min sign up though. Sorry, dont have strong feelings about all these proprietary things at all. I once had to sign up for playing a Ubisoft game on Playstation. While a minor inconvenience, took me no less than 2 mins.

It isn't about the time it takes to sign up. On PC, it is something you need to deal with every time you launch the game.

Re: Sony Boss Says It's 'Learned a Lot' from PC Player Pushback

evan23

@LogicStrikesAgain Yes. The situation on PC is different. The issue for me is not that I need an account. I already have a PSN account. I don't care that much about that.

The issue on PC is that every time you run the game, you have to have that account validated. So once the servers that do that validation go offline, the game becomes unplayable. Again, for an online game, I think that is fair. But for an offline single player game, it destroys long-term game preservation. Also, I hope you weren't planning to play the game offline, like an on airplane.... Preservation is my primary concern.

For other people, there is also a privacy concern. They don't need/want Sony knowing when and how they play their offline games.

Re: Sony Boss Says It's 'Learned a Lot' from PC Player Pushback

@Athrum Even if you make a copy of the physical disc, in most cases it won't be very useful in the long run. What is on the disc for most modern is games is a prerelease copy of the code which is typically in a pretty poor state. There are exceptions but most console game discs do little for preservation.

PC is the only real legal preservation platform these days.

Re: Sony Boss Says It's 'Learned a Lot' from PC Player Pushback

evan23

@Athrum Consoles don't last forever. We are already starting to see availability issues on the used market with some of the older consoles. Also, you are assuming those consoles will even still function in the future without their online component. Since the physical drives themselves require online activation, trusting that you will still be able to read those discs in the future is flawed to begin with.

PC is only platform where you have real game preservation so it is critical we push back on these online requirements for offline single player games.

Re: Sony Boss Says It's 'Learned a Lot' from PC Player Pushback

evan23

@get2sammyb I think blowing this off as "a storm in a teacup" deeply minimizes the real issue here.

For offline single player games, forcing an online connection and login is a huge blow to long-term game preservation. That means those games become unplayable if those servers ever go away.

For online multiplayer games, it is what it is. There is a cost to maintaining that infrastructure so the expectation should be that those games won't stay around forever.

For offline single player games, that should never be the case. They are hamstringing the future of those games so they can harvest data from their userbase.

I still play games from 20-30 years ago on PC. If those games had online logins, many of them would no longer be playable.

Re: Poll: Did You Buy a PS5 Pro?

evan23

The lack of a physical drive is the primary reason I did not get one. From a preservation perspective, that is a real problem given the need for online activation.

Re: Talking Point: Is PS5 Pro Way Too Expensive?

evan23

I am hardcore enthusiast. I buy basically every console. I am the sucker that buys the console at release and the upgraded model every time. switch/oled, ps4/ps4 pro, xone/xonex. I bought at least 5 different 3DS handhelds.

I am squarely in the target demographic for this machine and I was prepared to buy it even though I don't use my PS5 enough to make it worth it.

However, I can't buy this and feel OK about it. A $200 price increase over the base model plus an extra $100 for the accessories. It just doesn't make sense to spend that much on a console unless $800 is an irrelevant amount of money for you.

At what point does it make more sense just to buy a gaming PC?

Even if the PC cost a bit more than $800, you wouldn't have to pay for online gaming and you would have access to a bigger library of games. If you wait for a sale, you can get a gaming PC that will outperform the PS5 Pro in the $900-$1000 range.

Re: Poll: What Was Your Favourite Game from State of Play?

evan23

Astrobot for me as well.

The only other game that even looked interesting was Infinity Nikki even though I am probably outside the target demographic for that game. Seems to have strangely high production values for that type of game. I am curious to see what it is actually like when it launches.

Re: PS Plus Essential, Extra, Premium Price Increases Announced by Sony

evan23

I am glad I converted all plus and still have almost 9 years left.

This seems like a pretty steep increase to me. Especially for essential. It is 33-35% at all tiers. Extra and premium are being brought in-line with the GP price increases so I can kind of understand those.

It seems like people who don't care about online will drop essential altogether.

Re: PS5 Fans Divided on PlayStation Portal Handheld

evan23

If you happen to have a need for the limited ways this can be used, the next concern is performance.

Historically, Remote Play has not been very good even on a local network. If that is the same system being used with the portal, I think people are going to be disappointed unless their expectations are suitably low.

I definitely wouldn't recommend pre-ordering this until there is solid information on real world performance.

Re: PlayStation Portal Is Sony's PS5 Remote Play Handheld, Priced at $200 / £200

evan23

The price seems reasonable given it is a first party product. Certainly cheaper than I expected.

However, it has a pretty limited market I think.

  • You need to have a PS5
  • You have to be a person who wants to game on a mobile device while at home
  • It needs to be in a situation where the heat and noise from the PS5 will not be an issue

I can see some use cases:

  • Someone who wants to play games while still engaging with others(I couldn't do this)
  • A situation where there is contention for the TV but not the PS5
  • Gaming in a different room. i.e. Playing some games in bed
  • A need to play without disturbing someone else

That being said, since I don't have any of those needs, I will probably pass.

Re: Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Is Being Ported Backwards to Decade-Old PS4

evan23

@haoie It did sell well actually.

As for the performance, don't forget one of the big reasons for the low internal resolutions on the PS5/XSX was due to the fact that it had baked in RT. Hopefully they will make it at least playable.

On the PS4, that obviously won't be there so that should help with getting it to run on the lesser hardware. It also probably be a fixed 30fps.

Re: Reaction: What Happens to PlayStation if Microsoft Buys Activision Blizzard?

evan23

I think the biggest change is that it will put Sony and Microsoft on a more even footing in the console space. If that is good or bad will depend on perspective.

The days of all the good exclusives being on PS are probably over but this is hardly the first time in the history of consoles where that has been the case.

Personally, I don't think this will result in any drastic changes. My hope is it will force Sony into a spot where it feels pressured to start making more consumer-friendly decisions to compete.

Re: New PS Store Essential Picks Sale Has 1,400 PS5, PS4 Game Discounts

evan23

@Wheatly

What is my previously held belief that I am confirming with my reading of the available data?

I think the idea is that you went in believing that "they seem to want to only discount the really expensive versions of games while the normal version remains full price."

If you verified this by checking some games and seeing this to be the case, that could be confirmation bias depending on the method used.

To be clear, I am not claiming that is what happened in this case because I have no idea how you verified it. I do think that confirmation bias is possible in this situation though.

Re: Indiana Jones Game Deal Amended to Exclude PS5, PS4

evan23

@number1024

but what Microsoft has done, games that were planned for multi play release and then they lock that away...yeah, that's just morally wrong.

You and a few others have stated this but I don't really follow this logic.

If a company uses money to buy exclusivity it makes no practical difference when they do so. Ultimately, it is all the same. The difference is purely an emotional one.

Re: Indiana Jones Game Deal Amended to Exclude PS5, PS4

evan23

@number1024 I don't really understand this line of thinking.

Both companies pay for both timed and permanent exclusives.

Both companies buy studios to gain exclusivity.

Both companies have their own self interests in mind when doing these things.

Other people have stated this above multiple times but neither of these companies are angels acting on behalf of the community.

Speaking logically, exclusivity is bad. It is anti-consumer behavior no matter how you look at it. People are splitting hairs based on the mechanism to achieve it but it all comes down to the same thing. Without exclusives, all that would matter is who could put together the most compelling hardware solution at the best cost. It would also create competition between the stores. All things that benefit consumers.

Thinking emotionally, I like the idea of exclusives. It makes the platform and the hardware matter and makes the market a more interesting place. It also brings back fond memories of the days when a much greater percentage of the games were exclusive. Of course, as with most emotional arguments, it is logically flawed.

Re: Indiana Jones Game Deal Amended to Exclude PS5, PS4

evan23

@Cutmastavictory Unfortunately, one of the flaws with this platform is I don't know which of my comments you are responding to.

If you are referring to the original one at the top, it was a joke.

If you are referring to the one about competition, I think it is better for the exclusives to be spread more evenly between the big 3 competitors than to be heavily focused on just two of them as has recently been the case.

Re: Indiana Jones Game Deal Amended to Exclude PS5, PS4

evan23

@thefourfoldroot1 I suppose one reason would be that after years of being locked out of great games they would finally have some decent exclusives coming their way.

Personally, I am a multi-platform gamer so I have no stake in the console wars but even as someone who is console agnostic, it is clear that Sony in recent years has been killing Microsoft on the exclusives front. Things were bound to equalize eventually.

We are now moving towards a situation where all 3 major platforms have numerous exclusives and I think that actually helps competition overall.
