As massive Vanillaware fanboys, we think September's PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium update is especially tasteful, but as always, we want to know what you think of the selection. Just to recap, this month's line-up is headlined by NieR Replicant, Star Ocean: The Divine Force, and 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. And then you've got a whole bunch of other Star Ocean titles, most of Vanillaware's back catalogue, and a handful of interesting indies, like Unpacking and Call of the Sea.
If you're subscribed to Premium for the retro content, though, September's update might seem like a bit of a con. It includes four remasters of technically 'retro' games, but you're not getting any PS1, PS2, or PSP classics this time around.
And so, what do you make of September's PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium offering? Vote in our polls, and then give us your honest opinion in the comments section below.

Im happy with quite a few games
Nier Replicant
Tails Noir (formally Backbone)
Unpacking
Sniper Ghost Warrior
Call of the Sea
Not exactly big into star Ocean tho and need shorter games for the backlog XD
I'm happy with the Extra additions. Looking forward to finally getting to play 13 Sentinels, Odin Sphere, Civilization 5 and Call of the Sea.
Whilst having a tea break from the excellent lies of p i filled out the survey but i have to say that nier replicant is probably the only one i'll bother with eventually. Lords of the fallen next month so my time is pretty much taken up but hey the winter months are looming so plenty of time then.
As a JRPG fan I think it’s a good selection.
13 sentinels is a great game. I know I'm a minority but I absolutely cannot stand Star Ocean. It is one of the series that turned me off of SE.
Besides the few indie games it's a crap selection. Premium is by far the worst selection since it started.
There’s some good games, just not justifying the price hike. By now, God of War or Gran Turismo should really be on there.
If this month's selection were an album, it would be a B-sides compilation. Get some hit singles on there Sony.
@Cashews But they're no SE games. That's just the publisher.
I remember Star Ocean The last hope being interesting. Not sure how well it holds up now.
Very excited to play NieR replicant and 13 sentinels. With the little ammount of time I have for gaming and an evergrowing backlog, I don't need more.
nier replicant and 13 sentinels, amazing month
Nier Replicant and 13 Sentinels are phenomenal masterpieces. Hands down two of the best games I have played in the last years. What a great selection for a change!
I have all the games already. Only reason i have the premium is for the hope of old games coming back, games already brought forward doesn’t count
@nessisonett I totally disagree. Gt7 is only a few months over a year old and it only just got the VR update. God of War, well that was already part of the game collection so most people already got it for free
Crap selection? This month is worth it for Nier alone. God tier game.
@ArmoredMore Ragnarok, not the original. And bear in mind that the price for Premium has risen to £120 with absolutely zero increase in worth. Do you seriously agree that they should increase the price while offering nothing in return?
The PS+ price rise combined with lackluster monthly updates really has convinced me just what poor value for money this service actually is.
Wait for a sale, buy the games you actually want for less. A thousand "free" games that you dont actually want is the same as having no games at all.
Good selection, I just don’t have time to play them rn.
That being said, I really seriously doubt I’ll be buying anything more than the basic Plus tier when my year runs out in November. I’ve streamed nothing
Anybody voting this as a crap selection has no clue what they're talking about. Ok, perhaps RPGs aren't your thing, but that still doesn't make it a crap selection if one can look beyond their POV.
I’m happy for those of you that haven’t played 13 Sentinels and get to start it with your sub now. Top shelf visual novel for people that aren’t necessarily huge on visual novels.
Also, Star Ocean fans are eating good right now. I think the series is ok. First Departure R was cool from what I’ve seen of it.
Nier Replicant is amazing. Won't be everyone's cup of tea but every new game plus cycle is worth it. The game's story, characters, charm and vibe is simply unmatched.
I'm kinda looking forward to trying unpacking. May try Nier
I'm happy I'll be able to play star ocean till the end of time one of my favourite ps2 games, and everyone should play 13 sentinels Aegis rim as it tells a fantastic story, one of the best in gaming. Although many people will probably disagree without playing it as its anime styled and people think (incorrectly) that anime can not tell good stories
@Lup ah. I still hate them. The Last Hope killed it for me.
I don’t really care for most of it, but I AM excited for Sid Meier’s Civilization VI! I want to try that so badly! My dad helped me understand the third game but it doesn’t play so well with my 1440p monitor on PC. It scales it too small, as it was meant for the average monitor resolution back in 2001. Which I wanna say was around 800x600? I don’t know for sure as I was born a year prior.
I don't play much (almost none) with monthly games. But I do like trying games from PS extra.
Civilization VI is definitely on my list for a while.
£5 is almost nothing for the game anyway.
I can't wait to see this game.
@thefourfoldroot1 as a jrpg fan I have all these games already😲
@PaulCapp
As a JRPG fan, with limited game time, I don’t get through that many 100-250hr JRPGs in a year, so lots in my backlog!
I already own 13 Sentinels and Nier Replicant, both of which I picked up on a steep sale at some point. I have played about 6-8 hours of 13 Sentinels and I was liking it fine but I dropped off and need to go back. It’s a very unique game, I’ll definitely give it that. It’s a mix of visual novel, adventure game, and real time strategy combat. If you don’t like anime or Japan styled storytelling where the protagonists are invariably composed of high school students, then you might find it difficult to get into. But I give it points for doing some things I’ve never seen done before in a game.
Nier Replicant is one I definitely need to get to eventually. Automata is one of my favorites from last gen.
A lot of excellent games... That I already own. Oh well, I still gave it a good rating anyway since quality is quality.
@Cashews You're not in a minority, it's always been a niche series and post-3 has widely been regarded as bad, with the more recent one turning it around but not exactly setting the world on fire. I really like the series, even have some fond memories of 4 and 5, but SO fans are quite rare. There's a special Japanese kind of jank that you have to have a taste for to enjoy 4 onward, even 3 onwards really, compared to how good the first two are - especially 2.
A word on the Sniper Ghost games and my interest in Sniper Ghost Contracts 2…
I played Sniper Ghost Warrior 2 through PS+ and played it for a few hours. It was fine, but, let’s face it, it’s a PS3 game and I wanted to play something more current, so I switched to playing something else.
So, I went out and bought Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 for the PS4, and I initially was underwhelmed…it was just ok, I thought. I was hoping it’d be more like a Sniper Elite 4 or 5 game, but it’s not. Ultimately, whether you like that one comes down to expectations. Ultimately, SGW 3 is pretty good for what it is: A Frostbite-engine Far Cry FPS clone with a slightly more than budget/bargain bin feel; emphasis is on drone flying and sniper fire mechanics (wind speed, distance, bullet drop) until the enemy spots you, at which point it becomes a more typical shooter.
I then bought Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts for PS4, and I liked it. I thought it needed more polish, but the contracts were cool. Problem is, I bought it on disc for PS4, and about 2 weeks later I got a PS5. So, I only spent about 3-4 hours playing it before putting it down for games I could play on PS5.
Now comes Sniper Ghost Contracts 2, and I can play it on the PS5 through PS+. I’m actually a little excited! I feel like I now know what to expect from the game. I’m just hoping for a Sniper Ghost Contracts game with a bit more polish. If that’s what it is, it’ll be a good month!
Pile of ***** for me, don't take offence because I realise others mat like them but for me this month is dog****
As a jrpg's fan I'm loving that all the star ocean games except 2 are there and the vanillaware titles and nier as well haven't tried the new one but I liked the original 😊
@nessisonett they should definitely always offer the best possible games. I just think two first party titles that are barely a year old is a bit optimistic. It’s not game pass
@ArmoredMore Forbidden West was added almost exactly a year after release, with the older exclusives all going on it after the service updated. Ratchet and Clank went on the service just under two years after launch. Gran Turismo 7 being 18 months old puts it directly between those two situations.
@nessisonett true about forbidden west, ragnarok will probably come to plus soon. Gran Turismo gets constant big updates, has just had an amazing vr update AND the movie just came out so I honestly wouldn’t expect it be a plus game anytime soon
Plus GT Sport never came to any of these services.
Its a super month for Rpg and action games for sure. One of the best months in a long time but the premium is lacking. And if this was what Sony was about like it was during the PS and PS2 cycle we wouldnt have lost so many to Nintendo. Which I bet had more viewers on their showcase over Sony. But we are kind of a broken community and its a bunch of Xbox shooter looters always being vocal and hating on PS but never game on the console hardly, they really just want it to fail. I dont know why because it would hurt the game market but Im guessing they just not really happy with their selection either so come here to fake gripe.
£10 for that selection? Yes please. Or we could buy three Costa coffees.... Make your choice and buy what you buy, but I'll never understand people who wish to paint this as a bad deal!
Not that Ive got time to play many ( so much to play) , but I like having the choice... 😁
I'm really happy that I don't use PS Plus or any subscription.
I think it's a great month.
Same with the Xbox Indies.
