Octopath Traveler II is here, bringing some traditional, turn-based RPG adventuring to PS5 and PS4. Of course, the first Octopath Traveler is nowhere to be seen on PlayStation platforms — which makes the arrival of this sequel a bit weird — but the good news is that the two titles boast separate stories and characters.
It also helps that this follow-up is a very, very good game. We awarded the gorgeous release an 'excellent' 9/10 in our Octopath Traveler II PS5 review — and regular readers will know that score doesn't come around often. We called it "a breath-taking work of art, filled to the brim with story and adventure, bolstered by a cast of incredible characters who will leave you wanting more at every turn."
So, with our excitable recommendation out of the way, we need to know: are you playing Octopath Traveler II? Vote in our polls, and then gather your party in the comments section below.

Im playing hogwarts, then will be onto Yakuza, followed by RE4. Too much out atm. I'll pick this up on sale later in the year i hope
I definitely want to play this as a throwback to yesteryear and I like the art style. I was going to wait on it.
However, After the real poor showing of the lo Wong demo out today, I'm considering it. Because even as a die hard souls like fan, Wo Long is absolutely not worth full price.
I like to play genres in order so I first have to beat Dragon Quest
I really want to play it; but I never played the first one, and I am not going to go play it on a different platform; so I wait for a port of it before I dive into this.
I really want it. It’s bad that I’m tempted to buy it, even though I know I won’t get to it for a while. I’m playing Like a Dragon: Ishin! right now, then Atomic Heart after that. I still have to play Persona 4 Golden, which I bought on release and have played for maybe about 20 minutes.
@thedevilsjester It’s a stand alone sequel. You can play it without playing the first game.
After being disappointed by Hogwarts Legacy, I returned it and bought Octopath, excited to start it this weekend.
Playing Hogwarts Legacy right now. Playing a jRPG at the same time is a bit to time intensive for me.
On the list, will play it down the line. Between my PC and PS5 simply swimming in games, some need to fall by the side.
No, I should play octopath traveler 1 first
I’m loving Hogwarts Legacy now so I’m going to continue with that for a long time.
Got around 18 hours into the first one & decided that I'd probably never get to a point where I gave a crap about any of the characters or the plot. Music & mechanics were decent but it was fairly grindy. There were so many people who loved it when it first came out & I really wanted to like it more than I did.. maybe I'll get this one when it's on sale.
Eventually on sale and for the switch. I just feel this game is a perfect portable game. Very much enjoyed the demo!
FYI, for those stating they should play the first one... It's not a sequel. And this is supposed to improve on the first in notable ways, so it's probably recommended to just go straight to this.
Eventually yea like almost every new release. There just isn't enough time and money to get around to all these
But idk how I feel about it basically being almost exactly like the 1st one. I love me JRPGs but not the ones that are very mundane like the 1st one or those Tokyo RPG Factory games that Square used to pump out
Already have the first game sitting in my backlog so won't be touching the second until I've played the first. Too busy with Hogwarts to even have the time for it
@Mauzuri I really liked the first one but didn't finish it because the boss battles towards the final couple of chapters were too difficult, and just an absolute slog. I'd also like to learn more about the difficulty before committing to this.
Not sure yet, if the Audience Score is good too and the story is better than the first one, then probably later on sale. But in any case that would be on my Switch because as @EquiinoxGII mentioned, this kind of JRPGs are better as portables when available.
Aside from the game very pretty, there wasn't a whole lot for me to really latch on to and motivate me to continue playing the first game.
Got bored, and dropped it on Switch after a few hours, so I'm not really at all interested in the sequel.
Downloaded the demo today. Hopefully I get into it enough to want to buy
For whatever reason, I can't generate much excitement for the Octopath games.
LOVED Triangle Strategy, and bought Live-A-Live on sale earlier in the year, so it's not like I don't gel with HD2D games. I just... I dunno.
I'd probably have bought it if I wasn't busy with so much other stuff. Deep into Fire Emblem Engage, Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom, and Xenoblade DE. Just started Grim Guardians: Demon Purge. Fatal Frame 4 comes out soon. My nephew wants to play the new Kirby game with me, so I grabbed that. Advance Wars in April, Tears of the Kingdom in May, Rain Code in June, and Pikmin 4 in July. Plan on platinuming Gravity Rush Remastered soon. Soul Hackers 2 is hitting Game Pass soon.
I have a LOT of gaming on my plate as it is.
Not yet.but im definitely going to buy it.the demo and oswald story and gameplay is excellent.i already knew octopath traveler 2 was going to be a amazing game.the graphics is cool also.word up son
I was expecting my Steelbook version today but just had an an email saying it's unavailable.Loved the first game so will definitely be playing it soon!
@Ralizah How is Grim Guardians? I’m firmly on the fence with it. I love a good Castlevia-like and Inti Creates, but I dunno…
For Octopath 2, I echo the sentiments that the first one was solid, but also a grindy slog that was more interesting in concept than execution. Meanwhile, Triangle Strategy was #3 in my top games of 2022. I just don’t know if I’ll have the time and motivation to play through the second one with the release schedule being thick as it is currently.
I probably won't get it. I haven't bought the first one yet, and that is low down on my wishlist. There's lots of great RPGs out there, and the Octopath Traveller games don't seem particularly special as far as I know.
I'd love to buy it but I got Like A Dragon Ishin and The Legend of Dragoon to play right now, as well as Trails of Zero that still needs finishing with Trails to Azure coming in March. So trying to hold it back a few months
@somnambulance It's fun. Basically Curse of the Moon 3, but with more exploratory levels and a Mega Man X-esque structure where you can use power-ups obtained later in the game to go back to earlier levels and explore alternate level routes and optional side areas. It's a little easy by default, but apparently a harder difficulty setting unlocks after you beat the game.
I've wanted something like CotM, but without the 8-bit flair for a while now, so I'm happy with it.
I was attempting to but it's the only game that shuts down my ps5 entirely. I chalked it up to it only happening on the demo at first but nope, it's happening on the main game as well. It's clean and not even hot to the touch. I'll probably just dl and play the ps4 version on the ps5 and see if it's happening there too.
Why hasn't the world's governments gone after Sony for this. This is obviously not fair to Xbox owners at all.
Got it but was too busy to start it yet.
Really looking forward to getting to it tomorrow.
Skipped the first one, but downloaded and played part of the demo for OT2 using Temenos.
I like the HD-2D graphics, but typical mediocre JRPG dialog and voice acting is unappealing. Plus, after having played many JRPGs over the years, pretty much done with random battles.
Maybe on a deep sale down the road. Looking forward to Sea of Stars.
I'm gonna have to get this on Switch. Ill never play this if i get it on PS5.
The demo looked and felt a lot better on PS5 with higher resolution and haptic feedback so I’ll gladly pass on the portability and play it at its best. When Theathrythm stops enslaving me, that is. Can’t put the game down.
Not yet, but plan to in the not too distant future....and still hoping for the first one.
Amazon haven't shipped mine yet, but that's okay. I'm still playing Hogwarts and 4 VR2 games.
I'll definitely play this at some point in the next month or two though.
@OnceaThief It doesn't matter to me if there is, or isn't. If a game is a numbered game in a series, I wont play it unless I have played the previous numbered titles. I know I am not alone in this; but I also know that it doesn't matter to everyone. It does mean that I occasionally miss out on an amazing title; however there are more great games already released than I could finish in a lifetime, so its not a void that's empty long.
Not being a troll but I honestly don't know why people love this art style. I personally think this series are two of the ugliest games I've ever seen (and Im a 90s RPG fanatic). Its dark and muddy and blurry and just doesn't look good at all imo.
I tried the demos too and thought the storys were really shallow and boring too.
I'm sure I'm the only one that thinks that...but does anyone else?
Ye
Playing it on Switch though, it's one of those games that i'll actively alternate between playing on TV and playing on free time at work. It's also where I played the first game and every other HD-2D release.
Bought it on PS5 yesterday, but will not receive it until monday. It will have to wait though, since I'm currently in full play of Hogwarts Legacy.
@Neonix Its a good game to me, but its definitely not GREAT. I feel its a bit overrated myself.
@invictus4000 I agree with your assessment of the art style; but I think (at least for me) that while I don't like the style specifically, it still evokes the feeling of an earlier more classic time in the genre.
I haven't bought or played either game yet. Waiting for the first game to be ported over to PS4/PS5 first.
Yes I know you don't need to play thru the 1st game to understand what's going on in the 2nd game, but my OCD compels me to play in release order.
