We’re knee-deep into another gaming convention with no further clarification from Xbox about which games it plans to make multiformat. Arguably the biggest story coming out of Gamescom Opening Night Live was the unveiling of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle for PS5, which will launch just a few short months after its Xbox Series X|S and PC debut. The MachineGames adventure was previously planned as a console exclusive, after Microsoft renegotiated with Disney to make it so.
Xbox boss Phil Spencer continued to talk in circles when pushed on the subject as part of an appearance on an official livestream earlier this week. “I think as an industry right now, there’s a lot of pressure,” he said, perhaps in an attempt to make Microsoft’s issues seem universal. “[The industry has] been growing for a long time and now people are looking for new ways to grow. I think for us, as players and as fans, we just have to anticipate there’s going to be more change in how some of the ‘traditional’ ways games were built and distributed. That’s going to change for all of us.”

The outspoken executive did appear to admit that his division is facing pressure from the upper-echelons of Microsoft’s hierarchy. “It’s definitely true inside of Microsoft that the bar is high for us in terms of the delivery that we have to give back to the company,” he admitted. “We get a level of support from the company that’s just amazing in what we’re able to go and do.” Obviously the approximately $80 billion that Spencer and crew have spent on acquisitions couldn’t have happened without its parent company’s unprecedentedly deep pockets.
But the build-up to Gamescom was dominated by one subject we’re largely still none the wiser about: what’s next from Xbox for PS5, beyond Indiana Jones? The show was preceded by a bunch of speculation, spanning Forza Horizon 5 through Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. All seemed reasonable, and now with the announcement of more multiformat releases, it’s clear anything is on the table. But when do we find out exactly what? At what point does Xbox rip-off the Band Aid and align our expectations?
It’s been several months since the organisation’s much publicised business update, and frankly we’re none the wiser about the platform holder’s plans. We understand the firm is threading a delicate needle, trying to balance the demands of its enthusiast fans with a business model that’s clearly changing every day. But it’s just frustrating for everyone. Is Marvel’s Blade in development for PS5? What about the next Perfect Dark game? Fable? Life will go on either way, but at some point we’re going to need to know.

In our opinion, the speculation surrounding every single Xbox title is having a negative impact on the brand’s image, and that won’t be resolved until the organisation actually sets out its stall. During the abovementioned business update, the firm attempted to make it seem like only four titles will go multiformat. Since then, we’ve seen both DOOM: The Dark Ages and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle announced for PS5. There’s clearly more on the way, but we don’t know what or when. Until the company provides some kind of clarification, the speculation is only going to continue.
Would you like a roadmap from Xbox about which releases it’s bringing to PS5, or are you content with the cloak and daggers approach? Were you expecting more information at Gamescom this week? Let us know in the comments section below.
Do you want Xbox to share a roadmap of its multiformat releases? (1,342 votes)
- Yes, just let me know which games I can buy and where
- Meh, I don't care, I'll just wait for more information
- No, I'm not particularly interested in Xbox games

I'm quite content to just wait in fairness.
It'd be nice to have the info but If I was really that bothered about playing these games I'd just buy myself an Xbox
Personally I think it’s safe to assume any Activision Blizzard, and Bethesda game would most likely (like I’m 80% certain) will be multiplatform.
Blade will definitely come to PS5 for sure.
I'll just assume that everything new is eventually coming to PS5 and at some point they'll start porting games like Forza, Gears and Halo to it as well to reach new audiences.
“It’s definitely true inside of Microsoft that the bar is high for us in terms of the delivery that we have to give back to the company,” he admitted. “We get a level of support from the company that’s just amazing in what we’re able to go and do.”

"Yeah, no, they gave us a tonne of money and now we have got to get our sh*t together."
An OBLIVION remaster and Rare Replay are the only things I need from them
I will never understand the business ways. So, microsftware bought actvision and bedesda to release on msxbx and ps5?
@bowzoid looks like it.
This might be jumping the gun a bit but im confident at this point it’s just gonna be the entire slate. If they’re announcing their big holiday title by one of their best developers and an acclaimed IP is coming to PS5 before the Xbox version even launches, I don’t think anything is off limits, especially with how Xbox console sales are just gonna keep going down with this move. I don’t necessarily care a lot about most Xbox titles—except for Blade—so it’s not like I desperately want them, I just think that’s the reality.
Wouldn't have seen an article like this back in the PS3 or PS4 days. Nobody wanted Xbox games on PlayStation back then. PS5 is out selling the series X that much it's forced MS hand. On the other side Sony has not really delivered on exclusives this generation so people are looking to get access to more games.
Xbox doesn't owe any explanation to Playstation. Why would anyone on here think that they do.
Im really not struggling for games, more than i will ever need. Have an xbox already, ill just be content to wait on news and newer games to come over
@Deoxyr1bose Indians Jones is coming to PS5 AFTER Xbox. Xbox is getting the game first and then PS5.
I don’t think Xbox knows exactly right now. They are currently just sailing in the wind.
I’d wager whatever can give them more money. It’s all just about money.
Xbox doesn't know the road map, their playing it by ear. Indy was multiplat, then exclusive, then multiplat.
@Nexozi Microsoft should have taken the advantage of the drought Sony had this year and promote Indy and other games as an EXCLUSIVE. They could probably sell some more Xbox consoles that way.
But nooooo, they had to announce a PS5 release right before their holiday exclusive releases.
Why? I don't see how disclosing other titles would benefit them, if anything it could potentially harm their platform. Look at the reaction online from some of the fanbase at these announcements, or the comment sections on any article relating to this topic, and you'll see people stating they're done with the brand, questioning the worth of buying another Xbox console if this is the direction they're going in, ect.
I think it's in their best interest to keep quiet about what is or isn't making it's way over to PlayStation.
We don't know because they don't want Xbox fans to know. The end.
Ironically, after failing all generation, Xbox finally has a compelling lineup next year. Next year does in fact look like the “next year’s the year” year. Shame it’s too late now. The platform has damaged itself. Even if I’m planning to resub and play almost a dozen games on Xbox next year, it actually feels weird to say that, after four years of a patchy release schedule
I think Xbox needs to start telling Xbox customers what to expect and what's on the way before it needs to start telling PS customers. The random directions and lack of solid footing on their on platform needs to be addressed before addressing external platform's users.
Beautiful photoshopping, though!
@anoyonmus who are we to argue with microsftware, then?
business is bussines and if anyone knows how that works then it's bill gats
But why?
I mean. Sony knows that they are porting all their games to PC. Are they telling PC players which and when during announcement of said game? Nope. They are pretending that no PC port will be made and then 2 years later, they will announce it.
Also, this thing can change at a whim. They could notice dip in number of console users and decide to make some changes.
Silver lining is. If you want to be sure that you will be able to play all Xbox/Bethesda/ABK games, just buy and Xbox. Or PC. Or subscribe to GPU and play through cloud. If you are not willing to do that, then wait. And pray that this "particular game" that you want to play will be ported.
I'll be playing Xbox games on my PC so I can't say I care if and when they tell us they're going to be on PS5
Yeah I don't really care. What else do they have? Starfield? Nah. Keep it. Halo and Gears were good 20 years ago. The only MS exclusive I'd really like to see on PS5 is Quantum Break.
I think any live service and any big budget games will be coming to playstation. It's only a matter of time before Starfield comes over.
Also from Bethesda Indiana Jones, new Doom and Hi Fi Rush have made it over so id say any Bethesda game going forward has a big chance of it coming to playstation, if you like Bethesda games then there's no need to switch consoles for them.
The only thing I’d be interested in, maybe, is Fable. There was a time elder scrolls would be on there, but it’s gone down hill since Morrowind and Kingdom Come Deliverance has overtaken it for me.
It’s pretty telling that everything will eventually come, is there really a point to keep asking or even demanding to know which games will be ported?
It’s like demanding a release date when the studio still isn’t ready to share it but still knowing the game is coming.
@cburg everybody knows they don’t.
Doesn’t stop people wanting to know, because clarity is better.
There’s no way you can believe that all the rumours/uncertainty and so in is beneficial for MS or anyone else.
@Intr1n5ic the platform is harmed by not knowing. By not being clear. When has a business ever succeeded by flip flopping?
I own ps5/Series S. do I play on the series S or do I hold out and play a better version on PS5? (Because obv ps5 more powerful)
@cburg Did you even read the article? It's not saying the owe anybody anything. It's talking about the damage they are doing to their own brand with all the uncertainty.
Whilst the Xbox division pivoted from hardware console numbers over a generation ago,to "user engagement",Microsoft has seemingly gotten shy with sharing exacting Gamepass engagement to shareholders these days by trying to merge PC Windows & Xbox all under the same umbrella.
Whilst Satya might be aiming to assure shareholders the billions lent to Xbox is going well, you can bet internally they're looking closely at how the new multi-tiered Gamepass numbers are faring to dictate potential future multiplatform releases even if as potential "stealth drops" later
@anoyonmus I meant announcing the fact even before the Xbox version is out.
Theres definitely more games to come.im excited for doom the dark ages.word up son
@PsBoxSwitchOwner Perhaps, but I believe to a lesser degree. Put it this way, are you buying that Series S today if you have a road map of everything you can play on the PS5, would you even consider a more expensive X in that situation?
@PsBoxSwitchOwner There is also the library building, I haven't bought a SX game,(except FH4) at all in a year. If I can just keep most of my library in one place/ex Steam, why would I split it....
Rich take coming from fans who have to put up with Sony not saying a gotdamm word about a gotdamm thing for years.
What's so bad about Xbox ALSO keeping its cards closer to the chest, huh?
"Oh BuT wHeRe ShOuLd I bUy ThEiR gAmEs?!"
Well, do you have the patience to wait a bit to maybe play them on your PS5? Or do you need every newest game on day one?
What's the worst that could happen? If a big Xbox release interests you and you wanna play it, cool. Can you wait a little while? If anything, it'll save you money and headaches because like every modern game, waiting will give it time to iron out kinks via updates and likely save you money by way of sales.
So how important is it to you to pay the most money for the (almost always) worst version of the game?
Answer those questions for yourself and circle back, because that'll be your answer.
Correct, Microsoft MUST tell me NOW. I bought a PS5, it’s my f*cking right. Or maybe not.
Sorry, are you implying you want a straight answer from Phil Spencer....????
Mhaw hahahahhahahhahahhahahahahhahahahhahahhah!!!!
Ahhhhhhh........good one!
@Intr1n5ic nope I wouldn’t buy the X. (As a second console).
Because that’s £480 outlay (already 8 first party games at £60 a go) plus the cost of GPU which is now £180py (another 3 full price games)
Do I still get value from my S and GP?? Definitely. But going forward those waters get muddier. Because across a generation now, most games that hit PSplus hit GPU and vice versa. So needing both subs will become less.
I don’t believe Sony being the single manufacturer is a good thing either.
All I care about at this moment is if Blade is coming to PlayStation
It's time for Xbox to come up with a decent business strategy and stick to it
@Intr1n5ic I'm not any less likely to buy either Xbox model if I have no idea what their plans are. Given Phil's recent interview and the Indiana Jones announcement they are giving the impression that basically nothing is off the table. At least if I knew that games that meet a certain criteria may come to PS5 at a later date and then other games that don't meet the criteria will remain exclusive to Xbox on console then I may consider buying one if a game i want to play that will remain exclusive is announced. At the moment there's nothing to persuade me to buy an Xbox based off what they are currently saying.
Masterful thumbnail, I’ve nothing further to add. Great edit.
@Kevw2006 I get that but you wouldn't be the market I'm referring to. I'm specifically talking about those who are so brand focused that every announcement is met like it's a personal slight on them and their loyalty.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner "I don’t believe Sony being the single manufacturer is a good thing either."
For the record, neither do I.
I dont really think THEY have a clue what they are doing, and even if a PS5 version of game x or y is in development they dont want to say in case MS changes their mind and lets XBOX keep their exclusive.
Thats the root of the issue imo - MS is forcing XBOX actions, and their wants and needs are just not aligned.
'Be careful what you wish for' has never been truer.
It's Time for Sony to Tell Us Which Games It's Bringing to PS5 surely?
Port the XBOX ONE games such as Disney Rush, Disneyland Adventures, Zoo Tycoon, Scream Ride, Re:Core to PS5 and I will be happy.
Honestly,. At least folks from the Xbox platform actually engage journalists and the fan base. Even if it's not always as forthcoming as it could be.
We hear literally nothing from the Sony side.
If they bring Forza over I'd probably never touch my Xbox again lol. On a serious note I agree, just rip the bandaid off and be transparent and move forward from there.
Why would they? Playing coy gives them all the power. They can make a big publicity stunt out of a port announcement. Play up a game's timed exclusivity as though it is an exclusive. Or even what I would imagine happened with Indiana Jones — unless it was direct interference from Disney — where they test market interest when it is an exclusive, and find out just doesn't conquer enough interest to stay exclusive.
Whatever the case, there's still no incentive for them to be transparent about it. This request is also going off the assumption that they internally have this set in stone, which is unlikely.
Lost odyssey and gears
@Godot25 Well the difference is that the PlayStation PC ports are all of games that were never going to ship on Xbox. But the Activision/Blizzard/Bethesda games have released on both PlayStation and Xbox since basically the PS3/360 generation, and now because Xbox decided to purchase these two large publishers outright, there is an air of uncertainty around games that before, would've been assumed to be multiplatform.
@Member_the_game I'm more curious to see what's off-limits than anything else. We already know Activision really can't afford to be Xbox-exclusive (33% of Q1 profits for Xbox this year came from Activision). Zenimax was bought under the (directly-stated) claim that it would be pushing out only Xbox games, but of the 5 major games that have come out for them, only Starfield has yet to come (also somewhat ironic that the first 2 big games to come out after the buyout were PS5 exclusive at launch). Indiana was a game very much announced as a Microsoft exclusive (Phil himself said as recently as February that it was the case), yet that is now not the case. Considering the rumours with weight behind them also have big titles coming (Forza, Halo MCC, Flight Simulator), it's going to be interesting to see if the line's ever going to be drawn.
Makes sense for them to keep the mystery of which games they choose. I expect them to be vague about it going forward.
Sony does the same thing with pc. Until they get to all games day 1 on pc, they will remain cagey about it.
You could say the exact same thing about Sony and their PC releases. It'd be nice to know if games like Astro-Bot, Demons' Souls, etc. are going over, but it's in Sony's interest not to be clear about it until they decide to, since some people, sans news about upcoming releases, will buy Playstation consoles for exclusives they want to play.
@Intr1n5ic I think Xbox's market problem (beyond marketing) is that they have failed, completely, to establish a marketable identity for the product. Right now it's basically "It's just like a Playstation but with Game Pass". Then they keep changing the GP price, the GP terms, the GP messaging, then saying you don't need a console for GP streaming is the future, and then they announce you can also play an increasing number of its exclusive games on Playstation too." And while PS may (or may not?) have a Pro, Xbox has mostly said they won't. They had shaky ground to start with without a differentiating aspect that's marketable beyond GP, but they've undermined all the attributes they did have into a marketing jumble few grasp. Fans "in the know" know why they do or don't like it but the masses? There's no identity. I was a happy XB customer with a firm policy of "3rd party on Xbox, exclusives/VR on PS", after I tired of Sony's restrictive BS. With Xbox's ever changing direction these past 2 years I'm moving back to PC. Sony and MS are exhausting. And offensive.
@Futureshark Sometimes you can't even see the strings dangling above poor whipped Phil's head. "About straigHt commEnts, what I can say is that last year I said some things, and this is really an extension of that same idea, which is, it's amazing what we can do, we have realLy great teams and it enables us to get out there and do so much with our tremendous engagement, and what's most imPortant is that our players out there everywhere, on console and the cloud and Playstation and Nintendo, and that X-thing, all of theM can get access to play whEre they want!"
@NEStalgia I agree with the market identity issue. At the start of the generation it was clear to me that Xbox had a goal of selling more consoles with an emphasis on gamepass being attached, basically automatically because it’s such a good deal. This would drive console sales and subscription numbers. However, the narrative has changed so much due to their mixed messaging that any person looking to invest in an ecosystem would really need to question the point of Xbox. PS offers extra (which has a ton of good games), PS exclusives (which take years to appear on PC), and now… Xbox exclusives within six months?
The lack of clarity on strategy is really what’s sinking the ship. What I thought they were doing at the beginning of the generation is not at all what they are doing now!
Among the “core gamers” I predict lots of people moving mostly to PC before the next generation. Among the casual audience I expect Nintendo and PS to control with a very small Xbox niche market going forward. It’s too bad… the OG Xbox was so exciting back in the day I wish it was still like that!
Why Microsoft would do that? Indiana will launch on Xbox, Game Pass and Steam. When those platforms are explored it's financially profitable to bring it to other platforms
Better still Sony could release some first party games instead of waiting to see what scraps xbox throw their way
As much as we may think that Xbox as a hardware provider is dead, Xbox still has a large playerbase that they need to support, at least for this console generation. If Xbox were to open the flood gates and port everything over, including tent-pole franchises like Halo, Gears of War, Forza and Flight Simulator, they'd be slapping their console owners in the face, as the exclusives available on their (and any other) console is a large part of the reason for purchase. If they give the exclusives to a competitor, why did people buy the console in the first place?
Secondly, and I think more importantly, they just announced the mid-cycle refresh with a white discless Series X and 1TB Series S. To announce now that they're bringing all tent-pole franchises to PlayStation would obliterate any reason people would have to buy in to those consoles, as they could just buy a PS5, get all of the Xbox games + PlayStation games. It just doesn't make sense to do right now.
I’d like Gears collection and the horizon games. That’ll do nicely
@Deoxyr1bose Got ya. My bad
@pyrrhic_victory But author of article is also talking about Xbox Game Studios. And majority of them never released their game on PlayStation. So your argument is kinda...invalid?
Also, it literally doesn't matter if they previously released their games on PlayStation. They are currently owned by Microsoft. They decide what strategy is best for Xbox as a platform. And what's best today, doesn't need to be best tomorrow. So giving some kind of blanket policy is pretty dumb.
So for example, if releasing Indy and Doom on PlayStation will give them some kind of undesirable metric, they can pivot The Elder Scrolls VI to be only on Xbox and PC. But if they already announced TES VI as multiplat game, they kinda backed themselves into the corner. If they don't announce platform unless it's absolutely necessary, it gives them freedom to do whatever they want, whenever they want.
It's pretty simple. You know that every XGS/Bethesda/Activision game will be on Xbox and PC. Case-by-case basis on other consoles. So if you are unwilling to invest into Xbox console, then you can portbeg and hope that game you want will be ported.
It's same as if you are PC player and want to play Demon's Souls remake and other PS Studios game. You can beg that Sony will finally port DS remake to PC. But if you want to be 100% certain that you will be able to play it, you need to buy PS5.
Project Latitude (program for creating ports of Xbox games to other platforms) currently for example doesn't include games like Fable, Gears of War E-Day, South of Midnight, Perfect Dark and Hellblade 2. But Microsoft can tomorrow decide, that Hellblade II has been squeezed up and PS5 port work can begin. So how exactly you want to cover every game with blanket policy announced to the public?
@anoyonmus It's probably a great game but why would you invest in a Xbox if you could get it on a PC?
I’d be surprised if Disney didn’t have something to do with Indy going multi- plat. They want ROI on their IP, and the gamepass users aren’t going to generate that.
I don't expect Microsoft to make an Xbox on PlayStation roadmap. The Xbox team clearly isn't thrilled they even have to do this. The fact Sea of Theives sold 1m copies already on PS5 illustrates they don't need a long marketing runway.
It's honestly no different than PlayStation Studios on PC.
I guess I don't care much because I'm not interested in most of their first party stuff right now. Frankly, I'm surprised they announced Indy before it even hits Xbox. But it's a game that makes sense since it isn't an Xbox franchise.
@cburg you’re absolutely right that Xbox don’t owe PlayStation an explanation, it’s just their actions and lack of info is confusing both sets of fans and doing damage to their brand. Imo.
@IamJT That's excactly it! The strategy in 2020 was clear, and seemed sound. Cheap hardware, the price of a Switch but for a powerful(ish) home console, and $15/mo for a gaming buffet. A GREAT strategy. For some reason the market wasn't interested. The strategy failed.
Since then they seem to have meandered to at least 3 different strategies, changing with the winds and latest data with no actual direction in sight, and that's what's killing them the most. When the 2020 value strategy failed they didn't just pivot to a new strategy, they spent 3 years and counting shopping for one. That can't succeed.
I definitely also see the future as PC for the enthusiasts/core gamers, Playstation for the casual player looking for shinier Fortnite, and Nintendo for the "family/nostalgic old gamers/non-PC otaku/trendy rooftop party/Mac crowd." And Xbox for its niche.
The only games I care Microsoft to port to PS5 is Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey. If they release them to PS5 I will be happy.
"Reaction: It's Time for Xbox to Tell Us Which Games It's Bringing to PS5, and Which Games It Isn't"
Entitled much?
Wanting a road map from Xbox on games they intend to realise on PS5? Lmao, back in your box.
@NEStalgia I don't blame you, I plan on building a rig myself at some point next year. I think you're spot on with everything else.
"For some reason the market wasn't interested"
I believe that reason was them not having a marquee launch title ready, and not releasing anything for the first 12 months. Sony had Demon's Souls, Miles Morales, Ratchet and Clank, and Returnal out the door before Microsoft released yet another Forza. From that point on they found themselves playing catch up again.
The other point I wanted to make is Xbox is still in the hardware business, whether they like it or not. Announcing their full slate of PS5 ports will crater any demand for a physical Xbox that remains.
@bowzoid yes because now they will get 100% of those sales on Xbox and 70% rip every time someone buys those games on PS. Whereas if they kept them exclusive someone might buy an Xbox and only ever play that one exclusive they are interested in and then go right back to PS.
@Intr1n5ic That's a good point on the launch lineup. The old WiiU trick. Although it doesn't always work out like that. PS4's launch year was bleak and X1 actually had some interesting, if divisive, games in the launch window. But the optics on X1 were just so bad, it didn't matter and everyone flocked to the PS4. I think one fundamental problem the "value" proposition of cheap console, cheap subs had is, the value market isn't the early adopter market. So all things being equal the enthusiasts were more interested in PS5 launch, and then the continued game droughts on Series already created a desert by the time the value market started looking in. Plus so much of the value market was already on PS4 with a digital library by then.
It's a shame, it wasn't actually a bad strategy at all on paper. If I were the betting type, I'd have bet on it being a big win. The market is seldom predictable in gaming, though.
@anoyonmus nobody is spending 500 on a console to play Indiana jones
@NEStalgia XB1 had a Wii U situation in a different way, it took too long for the system sellers to arrive. For example with Wii U you had Skyward Sword release on Wii the year before meanwhile with XB1 you had Halo 4 release on 360 the year before which meant it took longer for the new systems to get entries.
Granted, Halo 4 being a XB1 launch title and Gears being a Fall/Holiday 2014 release wouldn't have helped much given how much damage Don Mattrick caused with the console reveal.
@bowzoid
Good grief, you know that 'bill gats' hasn't been Microsoft CEO since 2014?
@ecurb7 my dood, you are getting mixed up with bill gates
They’ll bring them all eventually because the user base is so much bigger.
@Intr1n5ic i agree, cause if they say everything or in my case Gears of War, then i don’t really need a Xbox. I would still have one cause i like the controller better, but I wouldn’t need it cause i would know my favorite titles from them are headed to other platforms. I do think the Disney licensing had some to do with Indiana Jones but likely not the only factor. But i think case by case would be the smarter choice. As the industry continues to figure out how to make money on the software and where games are headed.
@Intr1n5ic I think the lack of launch titles does have something to do with it. I also think GamePass is actually not that good of a deal. The largest subset of gamers play one or two games exclusively. Very few jump from game to game. Unless you are one of the people who like to jump game to game... I think its unlikely you will really get your money's worth from the subscription model. It just appeals to too few people.
I think most of them are coming at this point. I don't understand the point of holding them back anymore.
Don’t really care, I have a Series S I’ve purchased all the Xbox & 360 titles I want. If things I want to play eventually come to PlayStation, win for us. If not, won’t bug me.
Don't really care. Whole reason I never got an Xbox this generation because there wasn't a single game I felt like I was missing out on as a PC/PS5/Switch owner.
You're asking for a list - who says Microsoft has such a list?
This presumes that Microsoft has a master plan already written that they're just waiting to tell us about when they feel like it. Business rarely works like that.
They tried something with a few former exclusives, and watched how that worked out. If they'd bombed, or caused enough backlash to scare them, that would have been the end of it. Now, they're trying some more. They can afford to try a variety of different things to figure out what seems to give them the best chance to make the most money. THAT is what they'll do.
I think it's absurd to argue that this hurts Microsoft's brand. Look at all the conversation, all the speculation about which game SHOULD go next or MIGHT go next! This is free PR for Microsoft, and it only helps them. Every game people mention as a possibility is an advertisement reminding everyone they could go play that game on XBox, and every actual announcement is an invitation to a new market to pay full price for an old game. It's a win-win.
Would I like to know the full extent of their plans? Absolutely. However, that just isn't going to happen unless they fully embrace the route of Sega and just become fully 3rd party. They still need to keep some stuff only on Xbox to try to give the box something to entice people with. GP simply isn't enough.
As it stands, I'm fine with the case-by-case situation. We can sort of read between the lines a bit anyway in that Bethesda and Activision stuff seem to be almost for sure not exclusives for the most part. Starfield is only a matter of time I'd bet. And I'd be willing to bet Elder Scrolls 6 will be multiplat as well.
They are too corrupt and greed to ever do that.
Sony doesn't share a list of games it plans to bring to PC...
Hell, they don't even make one for their own PS Studios titles that they plan to release on PS5 in the next 1-2 years....
So why would MS and Xbox make one for the games it plans to bring to PS5?
And on the other hand, why does it matter? I mean a list would be maybe a "nice to have" but I, for one, don't really care if they'll make one or not. One doesn't primarily buy a PS to play Xbox games...
How should they know ? They have a business to run.
Agreed, as someone that primarily is on PC and Xbox but has started to play more PS5 this year its time for Xbox, PS, and Switch gamers to know.
If it's everything first party old and new then just say it they are coming with variable delays and stop beating around the bush (and stop lying). Say you still plan to support the Xbox console too long-term even if nothing is console exclusive anymore.
It's not hard to appease everyone, be truthful and let people make decisions now if keeping and/or buying an Xbox console is worth it anymore. For many it will be but for some let them know it's okay to just wait for games to come over time without wasting time and money on another console.
Hell Xbox might get some praise and even more game sales for telling it like it is going to be.
@GeeForce it can be a simple blanket statement. They don't have to list any games by name, just say something like:
"Any game built by Xbox in the past, present, or future can eventually come to other video games platforms like Switch or PlayStation 5. With that said we will continue to keep Xbox consoles the home of GamePass to build upon for generations to come with new console hardware".
See it's not hard I can create a Phill Spencer speech just thinking about the way he's worded them in the past. Answered everything we all want to know about games where and dedication to Xbox consoles ongoing.
It depends on how well the games sell on PS5. The better they sell the more pressure Nadella and Hood put on Spencer.
people did not buy their ps5 for xbox games, so why do we suddenly care about this topic? whatever happens, happens i guess... there is absolutely no urgency for any of it.
All I want is Stalker 2, really. But will just wait to see if that 3 month exclusive leak holds any weight.
Seems odd to announce everything for PS when they finally, finally have a games lineup that's decent. They've had nothing but 2 Bethesda flops in the past 4 years, and hellblade 2 I guess, although I don't know anyone who cares about hellblade
To be fair Sony also refuses to announce what games are coming to PS5.
For real though I’d play Starfield, Flight Sim and Senua .
Doubt they know either
They need playstation base to generate money because gamepass isn't making enough for them. So eventually there will be more games to come to ps and I assume games that have always been multiplatform like The elder scrolls, doom, eg and gaas will be there as also the new timed exclusives like blade and Indiana
@kuu_nousee But that's just ***** statement. Because it's just plainly not true. Even people who knows (like Tom Warren from The Verge) and who informed public about Project Latitude (program to port games to other consoles) are saying that it still be "select games" going to other consoles and not "all games"
Of course, that can change in future, but currently statement you created "for Spencer" is just lies.
And that's primary reason why statements like this can't be provided in a first place. Because it's highly dynamic situation that can change in a whim. Promising "all games will eventually come" is a dumb way to put yourself in a corner.
And mainly. Why on earth would they do such a thing. They have no obligation towards PlayStation users. They are just throwing them a bone after their main audience (PC a Xbox players) are done with those games to increase margins of Xbox division. Nothing more, nothing less.
It's going to be everything, in time. The logic of releasing any one game multi-platform applies equally to all of their 'exclusives'. You've got to imagine that if they released Halo: MCC on PS5 they'd sell 10m copies in the first week easily. Same for the original Gears trilogy. That's money they won't want to leave on the table forever.
I'd wager that they just don't want to blow their load and announce that all at once because of the effect it would have on brand image. Plus their games would be competing with themselves on PlayStation if they ported them all at once.
It suits Xbox to be as vague as possible on this so I'm not expecting clarity any time soon. Why tell the truth knowing that it could sway a potential buyer into buying a PlayStation rather than an Xbox when you can muddy the water and maybe sell a few more boxes?
There's also a good chance that they don't even know what they're doing yet. I mean, that's evident. Xbox is a mess. But I mean, it seems like there's an internal power struggle going on there with Phil Spencer and Co. wanting to win the console war and Microsoft upper management recognising that it ain't happening and just wanting to make money.
Eventually, presumably, Microsoft will win and everything will be on PlayStation. But for now there's probably still of i's that need dotting and t's that need crossing.
@IamJT What I've come to believe watching Microsoft for the last 10 years (as a 3 console gamer, laptop too for games like civ, age of empires) is this.
About halfway through last generation they decided their future was not in the console space. It was as a comprehensive platform. Ironic seeing as their pc store is an absolute disgrace.
I believe their goal is to become a cloud gaming juggernaut. Via the TV, tablet, mobile, console, pc and if they have their way even on other consoles (epic games store Vs apple and android set a precedent).
In doing so the console is only a small piece of the pie. If you buy a 3rd party game via msft you can play it anywhere. It's simply very early for them to be aiming for such a thing. But msft always have jumped the gun. remember consoles as entertainment systems lol
I think they do need to provie clarity on this, but not for out benefit. Whenever I see bits of the Xbox fan community talking- they need to know because their morale is so low right now. At this point Microsoft need to tell them how it's going to be. Then they need to explain how the new status quo is going to be good for Xbox fans and Series S/X owners.
That is, they don't need to tell us what's coming to PS5, they need to explain it to their own users in such a way as to give them something to be happy about.
I know this might come across as me gloating about "Xbot tears", but I do genuinely mean this. Every platform's users and fans (i.e. every gamer) should be looking at what's happening on their platform and thinking "this is good!" and I don't get the impression Series S/X owners feel that way right now.
I’m gagging to know if Gears Of War will come to PlayStation, I think it will.
It looks like they are kind of winging it tbh. Messaging is too unclear for Xbox gamers already. I also think, Xbox only gamers are anxious to know when they are going to see PS first party titles on their Xbox at this point.
Don't think they are going to see any answers until the last minute, if it even happens.
It's kind of a big ask to know which games will come to PS5. On the other hand, I don't get MS strategy at the moment, they are all over the place.
I truly think they haven't got a clue what to do next or what games to move over next. There is some backlash, but do they care? If it's all about Game Pass, move them all over but your paying customers will vanish like snow in the sun!
Of course, if I only had a PS5, I would like to know what games I was going to get.
Daddy Satiya decided that all are coming but gave Phil day1 gamepass.🎉
In the end it doesn't matter what Phil Spencer is saying as it's never said in stone and they can change their direction a minute later. One thing is clear, Xbox did cost about 100 trillion and MS and their investors demand a return on investment and they want is quick.
I think they'll use other platform holder events to announce legacy ports meanwhile their own events and Geoff's events to announce ports for upcoming releases. So like Starfield being announced at the PS5 Pro reveal (maybe due to the power of PS5 Pro the game can run at 4K 60fps), FH5 announced at the Switch 2 reveal, Avowed announced at the Game Awards (the game releases on Xbox in February), etc.
@Intr1n5ic @NEStalgia I agree with the marketing blunders. But i think it’s cause they lost to the PS4 so badly that they knew this console would not fly off shelves. To Intr1’s point no killer launch title and a 12 month gap of major releases doesn’t help. I think i have finally came to my own opinion of Xbox. They can’t market the future cause no one knows what that is, but MS wants in on Cloud, PC and console and mobile trying to be a catch all and have that user base and titles ready for when a shift happens. They said it themselves they can’t out console Sony. That user base is to big and loyal world wide. So they are trying to be in that “new” sweet spot of where gamers are heading while being in all places now so they can move more software units. It’s a marketing mess. Thats not wide a net to tell someone in a short ad what the plan is. I have said and taken my insults on this site that i trust and like and even understand Sony’s business practices with PS more and the only reason i don’t go with PS more is cause i don’t love the controller and Ui. With Xbox i am starting to wonder how much longer they do the hardware game and that will push my purchases more to PS5, unless i pull the. Trigger on a PC, which is something i am still on the fence with. The industry has become so odd this gen. I am dating a girl with a 11 year old, and he has a $4K gaming PC and won’t touch his consoles anymore. Maybe the future of PC and handheld PC’s really will eat into console sales more and more. I don’t know. For now i am sticking to the consoles and looking forward to PS5 Pro. But MS really needs to be more clear with what they are doing on their console side cause it’s wild how many mood swings the brand takes. They were on a high after a amazing June Showcase, now it’s filled with Xbox is dead cause Indiana Jones is coming to PS.
@Godot25 I think your right on the front Xbox doesn't owe anything to PlayStation users, the reality is they/we/us are just here if someone decides to make a game on the PS platform (where the majority of console gamers are).
About a statement like the one I created - Yeah it isn't true per se, right now....publicly. But it could very much be true internally at Xbox and more dire than we know. They just spent billions of dollars and haven't seen that return. Scraping away to find that return is in full force right now with new internal games on Xbox/PC (just on time), refreshes to Xbox hardware (which are not needed), and the price/tier increases/changes to GamePass (unneeded and stated not happening). There is a reason for all of this happening and it's because the division has to get out of the financial hole Microsoft allowed them get in just for the Call of Duty IP and King mobile. I'm sure there will be ramifications if they cannot show on time sale expectations vs what Microsoft is expecting in the next few years. They are putting out gargantuan bets out to stop extreme changes from happening but we have no idea if it pay off yet. This is the most 'do or die' for Xbox situation then they have ever been in.
Phil just said "there will even more changes coming" at Gamescom. That statement could also be referring a backtrack on Sarah's statement this year on "building the most powerful Xbox console" in the works. NO ONE has asked any questions since Phil's new generic statements at Gamescom about if that is related to next gen hardware. Is it still planned even? Who knows until officially announced.
This is the only thing we have to go by their "we are continuing to learn" statements over 2024. For who Satia? Their income deficit every quarter? Internal business is always super messy with buyouts so don't count out strange or outright more backtracking statements to come imo. If the income doesn't happen for Xbox the more aggressive changes will come. Like Phil said "we are a business", so don't think this is not this like any other big business in any other sector outside the video games industry. The best way you could describe Xbox as a brand right now is 'volatile'.
@kuu_nousee "But it could very much be true internally at Xbox and more dire than we know" - that's just your assumption to fit your "statement"
People who predicted PS5/Switch ports of Xbox games (NateTheHate, Tom Warren etc.) are specifically talking about "some" games, not "all" games. So if I had to choose if I want to believe your assumption or guys who proved that they know more than regular Joe, you know what I would choose.
They are not in financial hole, lol. It's Microsoft for God's sake. They have more money than God. Reason why they are porting games is simple as stated by CFO of Microsoft - they want to increase profitability of Xbox division to the range of other Microsoft's division. Which is 20+%. Just to illustrate, PlayStation division had under 10% profit margins last two quarters. And since they can't grow console userbase (which also Sony can't do because console audience is stagnating for last two generations), their only options was to bet on cloud (which is currently not growing as much as they would like), or increase sales of software on other platforms. Which they are doing.
"We are continuing to learn" is pretty obvious statement. They are figuring out a way how to keep Xbox console userbase stable, while also extracting as much money as possible from other sources (like PlayStation sales). And they are currently happy, because as Phil said, they have most monthly console users in history of Xbox. But if they will find negative trends as a direct result of porting games, they can pivot their strategy. Which they can't do if they states that every game will eventually come to PlayStation. It's the reason why you will never hear blanket statement. Same as you never see blanket statements from Sony regarding porting of their games on PC. Because strategy is shifting thanks to data you receive by every game you port.
@HonestHick That's the problem with Nadella's MS. They're always trying to hedge their bets for whatever the future is. 90's MS built the future (even if nobody wanted it.) He's fixated on chasing trends after the fact. Problem with that strategy is a product trying to be everything for everyone ends up being best for no one. They'd have done much better picking a market and a strategy and driving it hard. They had the resources. Windows works as a catch-all because it's been there forever and catches everything. Xbox doesn't have that.
LOL an 11 year old with a $4k PC? How did that even come up to $4k? Even 4090's are "only" $1600-$1800 in that build, WTF did the other 2200-2400 come from? That's some bad shopping there is what that is lol. I was a spoiled brat for asking for a Nintendo at that age lol.
But yeah Xbox's biggest problem is they do not actually have a product identity or strategy. They want to be poised so they're in every place so that they can capture the future when it happens, but forgot they have to actually be in the present to get to that future at all. They give no concrete plans because they have none, they'll figure it out on the fly, and can't figure out why consumers won't buy their platform. And it's really sad because it's actually a very solid platform that does a lot of things better than PS. But they actively sabotage every good PR they have with bad. That June showcase was top of class industry leading. They could have ridden that showcase into the holidays and 2025 hard and made their platforms, including GP and PC front and center. Instead they go straight back to porting to competitors.
But it's not Phil, it's Nadella. His hoofmarks are all over this. He's doing the same thing to Windows. TPM! Ads! Removing ways to set up with local account one by one! He's doing it to AI You'd think he'd have figured it out when OpenAI called MS "their IT department", and then went and signed a deal with Tim Cook after Nadella bet MS on OpenAI.
PlayStation only gamer here. I don’t need a roadmap for XB coming, I need a roadmap for what Sony is doing! Why aren’t the media outlets hammering Sony for not sharing what’s happening??
@Godot25 Jason Schreier -
[Bloomberg - Game On] Xbox’s ‘Exclusive’ Video Game Strategy Leaves Everyone Confused
https://t.co/AYsfH33YLf
Same for Kinda Funny. Greg, Mike, and Parris all saying similar to what I'm saying TODAY. What you brought up has been true but I think the conversation has moved on to other problems for Xbox.
"they can pivot their strategy"
This is the problem. Publicly they keep doing this (altering statements/lying however you want to see it) and it looks like they don't know what the f*** they are even doing anymore.
@kuu_nousee No. Because you are blabbing about blanket statement. Fact that Schreier wants one doesn't mean that Microsoft should provide one.
I will repeat. It's dumb as hell giving public blanket statements about "where you can play our games" when even Xbox currently isn't sure how extensive their port work will be.
I'm sure it would be perceived nicely if Spencer said that "every game will eventually come to PS5" and then he just pivoted away from that strategy. We saw how PlayStation peeps took nicely Starfield's exclusivity.
And mainly, general public doesn't care about any of this *****. College Football 25 came out with huge surge of new Xbox consoles sold despite fact that Microsoft started porting their games on competing platforms. So, what exactly would be the point addressing fact that Schreier and some other journos are confused?
@Godot25 Seems you don't see what other companies are doing in the similar space. PlayStation.
Sony just did an an investor presentation and stated when their 1st party games are coming to PC. So this isn't unheard of by companies to announce release or delayed release cadence to other platforms.
Investors ABSOLUTELY care about this and they are part of the general public fyi. College Football 25 came out to only to current generation consoles, Series S being the cheapest current gen console. So they bought that because price. If Sony has the cheapest console more sales would have been there. Not relevant to the conversation just a newer console exclusive game that fit the situation that price wins for the masses.
You stated you trust the insiders option more any "average joe" me I guess. Yet Jason is one of the top of not top journalists and leakers/if information is has multiple confirmations. 🤷
Hard to keep up with how many backtracks your doing now too. Anyways I'm gonna bow out of this conversation as you just ignore newer facts/things happening inside and outside the gaming industry.
The best Xbox can do, and im playing most of my games on Xbox BTW. They should do timed exclusives, release just like Indy first on Xbox and after 6/12 months on other platforms. People that are really excited to play it first hands on will buy in on the Xbox platform.
@NEStalgia lmao same your comment we t to see what Photoshop was deffo my putting that as my Xbox pic now 🤣
@NEStalgia Nadella is a huge issue at MS, they aren’t not nearly as innovative under him. They just put all their products on all devices. Even the Mac now is one of the best windows laptop cause of all the support Nadella has given to Apple. Xbox tried to have a console with a purpose and it was the Xbox One. Which was not the right marketing move and a little ahead of its time cause right now the PS5 and Series X is more and more like what the Xbox One was trying to do. I think MS is going to go even further into play all games every where heading into Next Gen. which i am just not sure is going to gain them all that much more audience. Time will tell, but the machine would have to play all those games really really well. I just don’t want to see an unchecked Sony. I think that is bad for the industry.
Relax. The examples you used, Fable, Perfect Dark and Blade do not even have release dates for Xbox yet. Not even an ingame hud lol. And those 3 games will likely get delayed to 2026 because this is Phil Slimey Spencer's Xbox reign after all y'all.
Xbox fans have been waiting for Indiana Jones since Jan 2021, 3 and a half years...... and when it finally got a release date, then came the PS5 announcement simultaneously.
They still have yet to confirm what other older games they are currently porting to PlayStation right now and since earlier in 2024. Xbox didn't buy those thousand PS4/PS5 dev kits for nothing.
The new game announcements can come whenever. It's still quite baffling why they wouldn't even wait until January to announce Indie for PS5 though. They must have a lot more game announcements for PlayStation coming soon and wanted Indie out of the way now.
@HonestHick Nope, nope NOPE.
Why do people always say this? We need an Internet Historian breakdown of how May 21st to late June 2013 really went down.
Did you know that right before the giant 180, Xbox threw it out there that you would be able to "re-sell" your digital games HOWEVER it would be up to the separate publishers? How would that even work lol? They were in pure meltdown mode and had no idea what they were doing, like Xbox right now.
When publishers like EA were asked to comment they shrugged their shoulders like they didn't want to be involved in this 4 week long train wreck.
Where has THAT come to fruition today? Where has an always online console come into effect today?
Where has the soldered in TV port gone on consoles, especially Xbox consoles?
Where is the Kinect gone? Series s and x don't even support any Kinect camera and so those consoles can't even play 100% of the previous games consoles games from Xbone.
"what the Xbone was trying to do". Yeah, right, in a revisionist's mind.
The consoles now use online to check for DRM. Sure the Kinect cameras and are no longer a part of modern consoles. But lots of under the hood stuff is there. However i am happy for whats not cause the Xbox one was a dumb idea in more than a few areas. They are still paying for it, as they should. Take your PS5 offline completely and see how much of it you loose. You can’t even play games cause it can’t tell if you own the game.
@HonestHick When he first started he seemed like he was going to be great, but yeah he cancelled half their products, lost control of most of their platforms, then started trying to strongarm their products like the worst of the mid-90s. I still wonder how much is him and how much is Gates. I thought Gates was long gone until a recent article about Gates' influence still being huge there, including an interview with Nadella admitting Gates advises him on almost everything and that the AI push came from Gates' obsession with it as the future starting in 2017 or 2018. If Gates is acting as MS' shadow CEO and Nadella himself is merely a puppet, that would explain a LOT about why modern MS seems as much in a nosedive as 90's MS.
I really don't think MS knows what it wants with Xbox. Right now corp is drunk on money, just maximizing the revenue from "gaming" as much as possible and looking over their shoulder to see what other companies are making. They don't seem to be making their own positioning on where they want to be as a platform, they just want to liquidate all assets for the largest, fastest ROI possible. Which is great for shareholders today. Terrible for their long term positioning. It's not just an Xbox problem, though, it's a broad Microsoft problem in general under Nadella (Gates?)
But yeah, an unchecked Sony would be so catastrophically ugly. PC's so expensive, but I'm not sure unchecked Sony would be any cheaper over a 10 year period.
@NEStalgia i was never a Bill Gates fan and never will be.i too have seen where it has been publicly stated that Gates has influence over MS. I would like to get into PC but right now i don’t have the money i would want to throw at it. If i did i would go Steam for my store and get a Steam deck. For now i still support all 3 consoles of course. But i was playing some PS5 last night and man that controller still annoys me and my left thumb. Sony has never had a controller i thought to myself this is super comfy and i love playing with it. NEVER!
@HonestHick Yeah, I keep thinking of our "you have to live The whole hobby" aspect of PC conversation whenever I get random odd things to troubleshoot out of nowhere! Plus suspend never (ever) working without having to end task the game or reboot lol.
Only nice thing about Sony controllers is on PC they have the built in mouse track pad 😂 I still think adjustable tension on the sticks would solve most of the discomfort. The lack of stick tension options even for $20 a piece on the edge says a lot about Sonys thought given to their peripherals.....
@NEStalgia the stick tension is a tad high for sure. But the width of the controller is a bit rude also. It’s just not comfy to me at all. Like i can use it of course, but i game way less on it and since i have a Xbox i just turn it off and go to the Xbox controller. Same thing if i owned a PC, i would just play on PC with a Xbox controller over my PS5. I will play Astro Bot and finish it and then not play much on it until 2025.
Yeah troubleshooting PC don’t sound like fun for sure. Even my work PC act’s a fool from time to time. Haha
