I’m a PS5 owner who has just finished Silent Hill 2 remake. Needless to say, it was absolutely brilliant. Before that was Alan Wake 2 (also brilliant) and before that I completed, and loved, Days Gone. My favourite game ever is Control. I hope that gives an overview of my tastes. So my question is, what next? I normally have a pretty good idea of what I want to tackle next but I’m struggling this time. Your suggestions would be very much appreciated.
@Barraiya I really enjoyed Silent Hill 2 as well recently. There are so many great single player experiences out there but based off of your examples, Returnal springs to mind. High challenge bar but also rewarding. Any genres you don’t care for?

@Barraiya more recent titles that you may enjoy but are yet to play could be Space Marine 2, Baldur’s Gate 3 or maybe even Astrobot (regardless of how different it seems from your usual fare).

@Barraiya If your favorite game ever is Control... allow me to recommend 'Returnal'. Some similarities between the 2, albeit Returnal is far more fast paced 'run and gun'. Exhilariting moment-to-moment gameplay, and a real poster-child of a game - in respect to what the PS5 is capable of.
Returnal can be challenging, but definitely not impenetrable.
@Barraiya Resident Evil 2 and 4 Remake and even Village in 3rd person view.
Batman Arkham Knight is my personal favorite, not a shooter but great VA cast, world and atmosphere and visually still amazing.
also, you can play Metal Gear V like an action game, no need to play hide and seek.
@Barraiya As luck would have it, Control is also one of my very favorite games, so I can relate.
The Returnal recommendation by others is a good one. I adored Returnal, and its fast paced shooting action, as well as the mild exploration and weird story — all components of Control as well. It also has a slight horror/thriller vibe with eldritch creatures and an ever so slight spookiness to it also.
Speaking of, you seem to like third person action / survival horror, so if you’ve not played the other two games from the SH2, RE4, Dead Space ‘Horror Remake Holy Trinity’ - then you should look there. I’ve not played SH2 or DS yet, but currently playing RE4 and absolutely loving it.
Obviously the two TLoU games are third person action horror staples, so I’m sure you’ve played those, but if not, absolutely highly recommended.
A random game you might look at is Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice. The combat isn’t on the level of GoW, Control, or Retunal, but it has that psychological horror adventure element that it seems you like. It’s an under-appreciated gem in my opinion. For some reason the sequel got middling reviews, but I’ll still play it when/if it ever comes to PlayStation because I loved the first game so much.
Also, there’s Bloodborne out there. You didn’t mention any Soulslike preferences, so I assume you aren’t into them, but if you want some creepy psycho-horror action-adventure, it checks all those boxes, certainly. It’s just got the whole Souls vibe and its associated elements, so you would need to like that. If you’ve not ever tried the Soulslike genre, it would be a good jumping in point though. Bloodborne was my first foray into the genre and got me hooked, and so I’ve subsequently enjoyed making my way through the Dark Souls series afterwards.
One last shot in the dark — Death Stranding. I would say this only because your taste seems to align with mine and along with Control, Returnal, GoW, and TLoU2, it’s in my top 10 games from the late PS4/early PS5 time frame. You’re not going to get the kinetic combat you have in Control, but since you mention Days Gone, you might like another open world to get lost in. The gameplay part is unlike anything you’ve ever played, but it does have a psychedelic creepy storyline. I think it’s excellent, personally.

@Barraiya had a quick scroll of your game list and it seems to be lacking some big RPG's with Cyberpunk as the only proper RPG on the list.
So it's now easy to recommend:
The Witcher 3
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 1/2
Baldur's Gate 3
You would 100% enjoy Max Payne based on the fact you love Remedy games, but might as well wait for the Max Payne 1 & 2 remakes in a few years.
Obviously: The Last of Us games seem perfect for you, being top level cinematic and horror themed, but as Sol says, maybe you played them already but haven't added to your game list.
The Uncharted series for lighter stuff but with that cinematic movie type element.
Red Dead Redemption 1 & 2 but 2 is an absolute must play for any gamer this generation.
In summary I'd pick in order for your tastes:
TLoU, if you haven't played it. For a raw, gritty, enotional, cinematic affair.
RDR2 for a cinematic, realist, immersive western with emotional storytelling and a finely crafted living world.
KCD2 if you want something brand spanking new right now (4th feb) that has a lot of the same qualities as a Red Dead Redemption, but alongside being super serious, is also charming and fun, and a lot more based on RPG and player choice with its design.
TW3 if you want an all time game with fantasy and swords and a similar RPG focus as KCD, with dialogue choices (like Cyberpunk but bigger and better)
BG3 if you want to try a more classic style RPG based on DnD and a real fantasy focus, similar in a way to cyberpunk, Witcher, KCD, in terms of dialogue choices and player choice, but that is it's main focus so it is even deeper in that regard.
@breakneck Hey. I’ll definitely wrap up GOW with the Valhalla DLC. Returnal was superb but I found it just a touch too demanding. I haven’t played Last Of Us 2 because I made the mistake of reading the reviews! I loved part 1 so much and I didn’t want to spoil it.
@Th3solution Thank you so much for the comprehensive reply. Bloodborne is an intriguing idea. I haven’t gone down the Souls Like route but maybe it’s time. Would you suggest ‘Bloodborne’ over something like ‘Lies of P,’ which seems to be regarded as a good entry into the genre also?
Death Stranding is another good idea. The walking sim thing put me off but I know it’s much more than that.
Nice to meet another Control fan. It’s the pinnacle of gaming for me but I know I’m unusual in that opinion.
@Ravix Thanks so much for the suggestions. I have played LOU part 1 but I avoided part 2 due to the story direction and reviews about the tone. Maybe that was a mistake.
The Witcher 3 and RDR2 are glaring omissions from my list, you’re right. I’ve never tried the fantasy, Dungeons and Dragons thing so haven’t really considered BG3. Again, I think perhaps I should.
@Barraiya
Try this game, Yonder The Cloud Catcher Chronicles.
I played this game on PS4 version but played on my PS5 machine.
The cozy cartoonish 60 fps Open World adventure game with 100% NO Violence, 100% SAFE for kids.
Also, I only play kids games even on PS5 and I'm 40 years old dude.
@Barraiya I hadn't tried a great number of different genres until I ran out of good games to play in my limited genre catchment so had to branch out into things I'd not tried before. I'm very happy to have done so though, as there are incredible experiences out there, and all of the best ones tend to still have a great narrative at their core 😃
I think Uncharted 4 and Red Dead Redemption 2 changed how I viewed games and what they can achieve, considering how I felt GTA 5 was quite a big drop off from GTA 4 in substance, and I would have been happy to not bother with many games beyond casual stuff and sequels at that point, but since those two I've found so many great experiences away from the casual sport and crime genres by seeking out the best of the best regardless of type.
Going with TLoUp2 or RDR2 is surely going to be a near guaranteed success for you, I reckon.
When it seems you're out of luck.
