So, I’ve been looking at DMCV longingly ..... mostly because I’m so bored with guaranteed-win open world games with so little action. But I’ve only played DmC (the remake), not any of the other games. Is it worth at this point playing 1-4 before 5? I watched a couple twitch streams briefly and they seemed really dated looking, and the combat nothing special .... I still don’t know why people hate DmC

(I’m gonna play Sekeiro first anyhow, so I’m happy to wait for sales/etc...)

They're definitely worth playing. 3&4 are ones you should definitely play. 3 is the stronger one of the two. Nobody cares about DMC2, and I think the first one is worth playing, but it's definitely an older game with some age. The 3rd one will be a bit harder though (unless you play on easy, though I never tried that). The combat is really good with lots of depth and if you like the newer ones you'll like the combat of 3&4 since they play quite similarly to 5. The story of 3 is also good and it's just delightful to see Dante do his thing. The opening scene of 3 in particular is legendary in my opinion.
The reboot, well we don't talk about that.

Thanks!

On the reboot, well, I think it is like Star Wars 1-3. Everyone hates it, but coming in to the series there I don’t understand the hate. It’s a pretty fun game. Literally the only 2 complaints I’ve heard about it are his hair, and a generic “the combat isn’t good”. I genuinely would like to understand what people don’t like about it.

@Mega-Gazz honestly DMC2 was fine but it is the weakest of the series and for the context of DMC5's story you don't really need to play it as it is very much a stand alone entry where as 1, 3, 4 and 5 is very much a continuing narrative

i would say you should still play it though

as for DmC: Devil May Cry it's fun to play but the characters are just terrible characters, Dante is an arse, Vergil is prat and Kat is inconsequential

@Mega-Gazz now the only thin you have to decide is if your going to play them in release order or story order because if your going to play them in story order you need to play them in this order
*Devil May Cry 3
*Devil May Cry
*Devil May Cry 2
*Devil May Cry 4
*Devil May Cry 5

and if you feel like it the Anime takes place between DMC1 and DMC2

"I pity you. You just don't get it at all...there's not a thing I don't cherish!"

@Mega-Gazz I would play them in order of releases. The gameplay evolution makes a lot more sense that way.

I beat DMC5. It was a fantastic game. The gameplay was so slick. Dante’s new weapons were fantastic. V was a great playable character soundtrack was rocking. Story was really good. I can’t wait for DMC6. The set-up with Dante and Vergil getting along in hell was fantastic and sets up an awesome campaign for DMC6, which I’m ready to pre-order. That ending made me smile more than an ending has made long time. Such a good pay-off.the final mission just being story and all but making fighting Vergil unlosable caught me off guard and did wonders for the story. I didn’t expect a final DMC fight to be so easy for the story. Bold decision too. Where’s DMC6!? I want it.

So just finished playing through DMC1-4. Haven’t played 5 yet. No doubt the series hit its stride with 3, finally getting their sense of humour.... but camera issues still plagued it. 4 was a huge step up in terms of things like graphics, framerate, etc, but honestly playing through once you fight each boss at least 3 times, that is kinda lazy. And the combat in those 4 certainly isn’t anything to write home about. Basically each weapon has the same key combinations that mean the same thing (e.g. r1+back+triangle is your air launch move). I mean its fun, but nothing so amazing that it is worth ragging on DmC for it.

I have to play through DmC again now to refresh my memory, but currently I think that overall:
DmC > DMC4 > DMC3 > DMC1 >>>> DMC2

I do agree that Dante is a totally different character and the story is more westernized, but who plays this for the story?

i think most people play for the game play

and to see Dante be badass

Yea, my point is mostly that the remake has the best gameplay (but I have to replay it to refresh my memory).

Also Trish and Lady are 2-dimensional male fantasies and I cringe every.single.time they appear on screen. Especially since Dante learns Lady’s actual name (Mary) but she continues to be called lady, like calling a dog “Dog”.

Mega-Gazz

FullbringIchigo

@Mega-Gazz well to be fair on that one she abandoned that name as it was the one her father (the baddie of DMC3) gave her and chose the name lady herself, it's what she wants to be called so he calls her that

and yeah DmC's gameplay is really fun but the Dante in that game is a bit of an arse
