Topic: Game of the Year Predictions

Yes, I know no games have come out, but that’s the point. I’m curious to see what predictions we have before have gene played any of the games this year. I know there are still games to be announced too, but we can keep updating our predictions as games are announced.
For me, I think the main top contenders are Kingdom Hearts 3 and Sekiro. KH3 is more personal to me, but could have a decent chance at some game of the yea awards, while Sekriko could be the main personal combatant for me for GOTY, as well one I feel is more likely to grab game of the year award. KH3 looks to have some great gameplay and an amazing finish to a story that’s been going on for 16 years now, but Sekriko looks to have FromSoftware’s sublime touch and is also fresh enough with new ideas that haven’t been explored very much lately in gaming.
So, what are all of your predictions?

Last year was fairly easy to predict, although God of War did come out much stronger than I think we would have anticipated in January. But RDR2 was a no-brainer to be in the running even before any of us played a single minute of the game. Spider-Man also was fairly predictable to be up there.
But.... 2019 is much harder to predict I think. I like the Sekiro prediction as a dark horse, but I just don’t see it having a wide enough appeal, but I could be wrong. KH3 has the mass appeal, but for some reason I feel a let down coming with that one. (Hard for me to be objective though because I’m not a KH fan).
Honestly, I think it’s The Last of Us Part 2’s award to lose. If that comes out this year, then it’s no contest — TLoU2 will win GOTY.
If TLoU2 doesn’t come out then I’d like to see another Sony exclusive like Dreams, Days Gone, or Concrete Genie get the accolade, but I don’t see any of those impressing that much, but I do think Dreams will be nominated for a lot of achievement awards.
As for multi platform, CyberPunk 2077 is in the same boat as TLoU2 in that _if_it somehow releases (slim to none chance though), then it’s a slam dunk for GOTY. However, the biggest mulitplats on schedule that I can think of seem to be RE2, DMC5, The Division 2, and Anthem. Of those, I think The Division 2 seems most impressive... but GOTY? I don’t know.
I’ll have to make my official prediction be The Last of Us Part 2 and then cross my fingers that it makes it out by the years end.

@Th3solution Uncharted 4 didn’t get a lot of GotYs though right? I think it’s important to remember that those developers don’t get them every time. And with Cyberpunk, I haven’t payed a huge amount of attention to the game, but from what I can tell, it’s gonna need to change so much from the Witcher and do so many new things, that I actually don’t have as much confidence as everyone else it’ll be game of the year, or super close. They said they wanted RDR2 quality, but the dynamic open world and detail found in Red Dead is nowhere to be seen the Witcher 3. The developer has no real experience doing some of their goals here. I’m not saying it won’t deliver, but there is some reason to think it it won’t be another Red Dead 2.
The strength of the Witcher 3 was in the narrative and that the gameplay, even though not amazing, made you feel like a Witcher to complement the narrative. The strength was not in the open world in the same sense as RDR2 at all.
Also, don’t forget about Resi 2 for third-party games.
I also feel that Sekriko will have enough mass appeal, just because Souls has become mainstream even if it’s not for everyone. I think it’ll be mainstream enough even if it’s too tough for some people.

@Jaz007 I’m not sure how many GOTY awards Uncharted 4 received, but the original The Last of Us dominated a lot of the awards back in its day. I think critics love the edgier games in general, and the more casual video-gamey style of game is probably not going to attaract enough attention unless it innovates gameplay in a significant way, or has a powerful narrative, or both.
I can see your point with the “Naughty Dog formula” and it not being a shoe-in for the highest awards. However, in addition to the potential for more mature and serious content in TLoU2, the gameplay footage looks like they are really stretching themselves and doing things different, similar to what From software is doing with Sekiro — the game definitely has qualities of its predecessors, but appears to push the genre forward impressively. At least from the little bits we’ve seen.
As for Cyberpunk, it’s probably a moot point because it has nearly a zero chance to make it out this year. It’ll probably be cross-platform in 2020. But I can see what you’re saying that CD Project Red hasn’t previously done the interactive open world to the degree they are shooting for, but I have a feeling they will come through.
RE 2 is getting a lot of attention, but I don’t think we usually see a remake be awarded a GOTY. But I guess there’s a first time for everything.

At Game Award?
Death Stranding of course!
My Goty?
Days Gone of course!

The crowd, accepting this immediately, assumed the anti-Eurasian posters and banners everywhere were the result of acts of sabotage by agents of Goldstein and ripped them from the walls.

@Th3solution @Frigate The Resi 2 Remake is unprecendt though. It’s all new. Yes, it is technically a remake, but perspective, controls, some writing, etc, is all new. This is more than your average remake and I don’t think it should be lumped with other remakes when it comes to the idea of GotY awards. It’s like when a movie is remade, or “rebooted,” it’s not disqualified from any awards because it’s an all new production effectively.

Cyberpunk will probably take it.

Ace Combat 7 for my vote.

Cyberpunk 2077 has no release date yet....

@Frigate Yep me too. I rarely pre-order anything and when I do it is usually a week or so before it releases. But for Cyberpunk I feel the need to pre-order it as soon as the release date is announced.

I'd like to think that Ghosts of Tsushima is dropping this year and it would be my personal G.O.T.Y.. But I'd put money on Death Stranding being the overall of most popular pick for 2019 G.O.T.Y.

It's a guess about what games the mainstream will like the most.

Stuff like Days Gone, Metro, Rage 2 and Far Cry are too niche. Their franchises or sub-genres have a sizeable following, but not on the scale as God of War, Red Dead 2 and Spider-Man.

If either the Last of Us 2 or Cyberpunk get released this year, one of them will win.

If not, that leaves games like Anthem, Devil May Cry 5, The Division 2, and Sekiro.

The Outer Worlds is a serious wildcard, if Cyberpunk does not release this year this could be in it for the win. Same with Ghosts of Tsushima .

Concrete Genie and Dreams will probably get some honorable mentions, but I can't see them having much mainstream appeal.

My personal GOTY though? probably Assetto Corsa Competizione or GTR 3. Maybe Days Gone, but I'm not sure I will buy it this year.

What's happening with Nioh 2? Is that this year?

Good job, Parappa. You can go on to the next stage now.

@Gremio108 We don't know yet, apparently more deets will be revealed early this year.

As a huge Soulsborne fan I’m guessing my personal GOTY will be Sekiro, but realistically I’m guessing Death Stranding or Cyberpunk (if released this year) will take the official awards.

@KALofKRYPTON I’ll toss in a vote for Ace Combat 7 in your honor.

Gee, I’d say this year is still wide open. Since Cyberpunk is coming next year, along with TLoU2 apparently, then I see no clear GOTY yet. Death Stranding? We still have no idea how well that is going to be received critically and commercially. If the other big releases that I can think of coming this year: Control, Code Vein, Borderlands 3, Jedi: Fallen Order, Shenmue 3, Outer Worlds, Doom Eternal .... none jump out at me as GOTY material.
Sekiro and RE2 Remake are still in the discussion, I guess, but seem too niche to win the overall GOTY. We’re over half-way through the year and there is nothing on the level of GoW or Red Dead 2. Am I forgetting a dominant 2019 game?

@Th3solution They were talking about this on the Game Scoop podcast from IGN, and no games have been given a 10 but more games have been give a 9 or higher.

I've only played Sekiro from this year and will probably only play RE2 Remake going forward. So my contribution will not be substantial for GOTY. 😂
