Topic: Thinking of Getting a PS4 - Questions!

I thought Push Square was more appropriate for this question than NLife, so this marks my first post on this site as well.

I've been thinking of getting a PS4 sooner or later. Now The Last Guardian is coming, and with Horizon Zero Dawn announced, it's getting very tempting. Tearaway Unfolded also released a couple of days ago if I'm not mistaken and Rime has got my attention as well. Anyway, I haven't been following Sony news as much, so I've got a couple of questions regarding the PS4.

I know the PS4 requires you to register to the PSN [PS Plus] in order to play online, but since I'm probably not planning to do that anyway, how much will I be missing out? Is the online shop still accessible?

I can get the 1TB model for €379, it is and 20 bucks cheaper than the 500GB model, but is it worth waiting for a price drop? Do these happen often? Since a lot of games I'm looking forward to aren't even out yet, I can easily wait for couple of months; There's no hurry.

And while we're at it, any recommendations? Games that might've slipped under my radar? I'm a big fan of adventure games and platformers, but I enjoy plenty of other genres as well.

Welcome! I'm a pretty new member myself and have to say this community is pretty great, everyone is really nice and helpful so definitely post more often! As to your question, I think it's worth registering on PSN as it won't cost you anything and I'm pretty sure you do need to register to access the shop, basically it needs an account so they know who to send the game to, your account would then hold all your digital games if you will. You might be confusing PSN with a PS Plus subscription which is separate and does require a fee. This is required to play online, it gives you discounts in the store which stack with store sales and you get a number of games which you can add to your library (these are digital games) each month without paying the store price for them (This can been viewed as "free games" each month depending on how you see it). I'm not fully sure but I think it may be mandatory to create a PSN account on ps4 but don't quote me, either way it's worth doing as it's free and allows you access to the store

@Hego: Whoops, that's what I meant, PS Plus. I understand now. But thanks, that's what I wanted to know, the online store and the online play are separate. I can't see myself paying for something that I probably won't use that much anyway, but I'm glad the online shop is accessible without PS Plus.

Welcome to Pushsquare. As already said. PS Plus isn't require for anything but playing online. There are a couple more things to note about that though. Free to play games will still be playable online without Plus, so that might be a small plus if you want to try something online out. The free games also aren't accessible if your subscription expires, but you regain acess immediately if you subscribe again. For price drops, I've never heard of the PS4 getting one. I might have heard of a store doing its own sale once, but that was a long time ago, so it's anyone's guess if it'll get one anytime soon (at least in NA anyway).

For recommendations. inFamous: Second Son is a great open-world adventure game I highly recommend you get. You play as an original superhero, and can choose to be either good or evil in the game. Samurai Warriors 4 is also a great game. It's kinda similar to Hyrule Warriors, but in fuedal Japan. Since I assume you never had a PS3, so the Uncharted Collection will be a must-have if you like adventure games (it comes out next month I believe). This is also a somewhat less popular opinion I warn to, but anyway, Assassin's Creed Unity is a fantastic open-world adventure stealth game. You play as an (good) assassin in the French Revolution. Batman: Arkham Knight is also great game if you don't mind on having missed out on the previous games' stories. Though City and Origins would be on the Wii U if you have that.

Welcome!

For me, PS+ is worth it for the discounts alone on smaller releases. Not so much any discounts on larger AAA releases as you can usually get the retail version cheaper anyway.

At the end of the day you don't have to jump into a subscription from day 1 but I'd recommend a short stint at some point to see what kind of value you get out of it.

Since I play games like Destiny, online access is kinda compulsory, too.

Enjoy Tearaway, I'm off to pick a copy up today. Going to trade in Pokemon X, such a let down that game

@Octane: In terms of recommendations it would help if you could tell us what consoles you have or had. In terms of games only available this gen, The Witcher 3 is arguably the best open-world, fantasy RPG on ps4, Bloodbourne is a great PS4 exclusive but it can be very difficult until it "clicks" with you, its an action-RPG set in a dark Victorian setting with Lovecraft-esque Monsters to beat. Theres a number of good indie action- platformers available on the console for under €20 such as Spelunky, Mega-Man legacy collection etc. A good idea might be to just check out the Store itself online from a PC, you'll get a flavour of the games available from that.

I'd say get the the 1tb PS4. Don't bother with PS Plus. Buy Bloodborne, and keep your eye out for Infamous Second Son for a cheap price

I suggest getting a PS+ for the free games a month if nothing else. I know some will disagree but honestly for 50 dollars a year you get at least 2 free games a month and get to keep them as long as you stay a PS+ member. There have been some great games that they have given as + games, stuff like Strider, Resogun, Rocket League (and you can get Drive Club PS+ edition) just to name a few. Alot of people will say that it's bad cause they won't give AAA games out for free on PS+ but IMO those people are just being greedy. The PS+ games are a great way to build up a library cheaply and quick.

Also with PS+ you can get discounts on games from the PSN store so that's nice too. I hardly play online with others but it's nice to have PS+ for the reasons I stated above and I think it's worth it.

@Jaz007: I think I'll wait for a good holiday price then. I've been enjoying Hyrule Warriors, don't know if it was because of the Zelda characters, or the game itself, but I was already planning on getting at least another game in the series to see if those are just as good. AC and Batman haven't sold me yet, I tried out AC once (AC3 iirc), but it's not for me I guess.

@Hego: I own all Nintendo home consoles since the N64, also have the handhelds, apart from 3DS. Since I play games mostly at home though, I'm not that big of a handheld gamer. Most of my friends had a PlayStation 1 or 2 when those came out, so I played a fair share of those consoles as well. Shadow of the Colossus is still one of the best games made in my opinion. Never had my own PlayStation, since money was limited, and there were too much Nintendo franchises I cared for to skip one of their consoles.

Both The Witcher 3 and Bloodborne are games I've been keeping an eye out for, I've been enjoying Bayonetta 1 and 2 on the Wii U, I think that's somewhat comparable to Bloodborne, I just hope the game isn't too repetetive. I'll check out the online store, thanks for the suggestion!

@Tasuki: Hm, I see. Might try PS+ out for a month or two, just to get a grasp of what it is all about.

@Octane: Bloodborne isn't a character action game. It's an action RPG. If you like games like Bayonetta, I'd recommend DmC: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition.

@Octane: AC: Unity plays much differently to previous ACs and is a lot closer and purer to the actual concepts of the series. If the general concept of AC appeals to you, I'd recommend giving Unity a look anyhow.

@Octane: Had my PS4 exactly a year, got delivered on the 12th of September last year and had The Last of us, Watchdogs, Hotline Miami and Killzone from the get go.
I'm gonna be honest - I was blown away. I stayed away from psplus until the Christmas, that was a huge error.

The pad, variety and graphics are second to none and have set the high standard this gen. PS Plus is amazing, this month I have 4 games.... 4!!! My favourites so far - Super time force, Rogue Legacy, Infamous, Sound Shapes, Geometry wars 3, Pix the cat, Guacamelee, Valiant Hearts, Never Alone, all these games off the top of my head cost £85-£100 individually and I'm not counting the other games which I cant recall. So yes its great value.

Seriously the Last of us, GTA V, MGS V and Resogun are must plays and best on the ps4.

If you are a gamer - PS4 really is the best console.

Broken Age is an excellent point and click game, and the PS4 is amazing for platformers: Oddworld New N Tasty, N++, Sound Shapes and Rogue Legacy are all great. If you're looking for other genres, Mad Max is a great game that deserves better reviews, Killzone Shadow Fall has a good singleplayer, Rocket League is insane fun, and the Witcher 3 is really fun to run around in

Welcome!!!!

I recommend the ps+. In one year you get your money back in terms of games and discounts, plus especislly if you come from Nintendo world, in the plus offer there are often platformers, shooters and action games with the retro feeling in them.

About bayonetta and bloodborne, they are both fast pace games, but bayonetta is more action oriented and forgiving, bloodborne is a very hard game, rewarding and extremely fun, but don t expect an easy walk in it.it is more a action rpg. If you liked bayonetta get the devil may cry series, which are both good on ps4. A great platformer on ps4 is sound shapes, which comes with an editor of levels, you create your own music/levels in it. It s amazing. Other games to look for are diablo 3, pirate warrior 3 and all the musou games, the last of us remastered. If you want to try one of the best coop game in ages, look at helldivers, one of the best exclusive on the console.

If you like Hyrule Warriors and have even a passing interest in Japanese History, or just colorful people with ridiculous hair hitting each other with swords...get Samurai Warriors 4. In my opinion, it's the best Warriors game to come out in years, it's beautiful, packed with content, and just fun.

Also, I think you should definitely go with the 1TB PS4. Hard drive space fills up quickly with installs, with some games clocking in at about 50GB. I mean, you can just delete them from the PS4 and it only takes a few seconds for them to reinstall when you want to play them again, but if you have to download updates, it can be problematic, so you really want that extra space.

500 GB's is nothing this gen. If you don't plan on upgrading the HD yourself I highly recommend getting the 1 TB model.

This is so true. I have the following games on my harddrive right now and it's 500 gb

Diablo III
GTA V
Tomb Raider
FIFA 14
Mega Man Legacy Collection
Rocket League
Drive Club PSN+ Edition
Pinball Arcade
Shantae
Injustice God's Among Us
Sleeping Dogs

And some indy games that I got free with PS+ and I am out of room. I am always deleting and redownloading stuff.

@Unashamed_116: @Splat: I always buy my games physical when I can, so I doubt I'll run out of space that soon. Even my 32GB Wii U hasn't ran out of space after several years. Hard drive space isn't really one of my concerns. I'll probably get the 1TB since it's cheaper, but I'll wait to see if there are any interesting holiday sales coming up in a couple of months.
