Welcome! I'm late to the party but I thought I'd throw my hat in.
Like everyone else is saying, just get the 1TB model. It'll save you a few headaches. If you're into adventure and platforming games then the following are worth a shout:
Witcher 3
Bloodborne
Last of Us remastered (as you said you haven't owned a PS console before I thought I'd throw it in as it's an incredible game!)
Shovel Knight
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter
If you enjoy the likes of Shadow of the Colossus then there's some great games that are more about the overall atmosphere and resonate on a more emotional wavelength:
Life is Strange (seriously, I can't recommend this enough)
Valiant Hearts
Never Alone
Journey
And just for good measure, if you like platformers and haven't played Rayman Legends, pick it up. Both new Rayman games are some of the best platformers around. Hope that helps!
@Churchy: I already have Shovel Knight and I'm definitely picking up Journey. I think I'll get the collector's edition that comes with Flower and flOw. Bloodborne as well. Still not sure about the Witcher, if I can find it for a decent price I'll get it.
@Octane: That's great! Actually, the set of the three is fantastic. And if you like those titles that are a bit more left field then The Unfinished Swan is also worth a punt. Personally I would put Bloodborne over Witcher but that's just my personal preference. The Witcher 3 is still a great game though (however, I wish they'd re-release the first two for console players!)
Just a quick question. Amazon.de has the 1TB model up for just €299.00. I don't know how long that offer is going to last, so a quick reply would be really welcome!
I assume that all European PS4 systems are the same [in terms of UI, language options, etc.). I know that a lot of games in Germany are translated to German and don't always include English language options, but I'd imagine that this wouldn't be the case for consoles, am I correct?
@Octane: I am sure the language options would be the same for all EU models. I would be concerned about the power supply though as I believe Germany (like most EU countries) use a 2 pin plug where as we use a 3 pin. you could probably buy an adapter or even a uk power lead too. I would have concerns about warranty and/or any complications should anything go wrong.
A pessimist is just an optimist with experience!
Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??
Feel free to add me but please send a message so I know where you know me from...
@BAMozzy: Thanks for the reply! It seems that all European models are the same, so that shouldn't be a problem. Don't worry about the plugs, I'm not from the UK, Dutch plugs and sockets are the same as in Germany, both countries use the CEE 7/7 and CEE 7/16 type plugs.
I am also thinking about a PS4 due to I think the Wii u is a short term and Xbox I do not like.I like a console that will last for 10+ years due to 400 is a lot of money I also need to know it has no issues with hardware. Also I am waiting on ratchet to come out PS vr and no man's sky.I also want to know is 500gb plenty or need to upgrade the memory right away.Tearaway is also one reason I loved it on the vita.
@Tasuki: Hah, thanks. I hope so too. It should arrive next week, I'll probably post an update of what I think by then.
@andrew20: In terms of support you mean? I don't think any of the consoles will be supported for 10+ years. Wii U will probably get replaced in 2017, a replacement for the PS4 and One in 2018 or 2019 wouldn't be too far-off either.
@andrew20: Oh yeah, online and game support will last a little longer of course. Still, I can't see this generation lasting as long as last generation. We'll see...
@andrew20: You could be dead in 10 years live for the moment or your not living at all.
£279 for a ps4 with mgs v as a gamer and member of a ps website is not a lot of money. Go and wash cars for a week.

So, after three days of fiddling around and playing the system; I have to say; it's an amazing system. Love the UI, it's quick, the device makes little noise and the games look great. Some parts of Journey were absolutely stunning. I played some other indie games; Fez (absolutely love that game, just brilliant), played a bit of Xeodrifter and currently playing Grow Home as well. Tearaway has been a little bit of a letdown, the game wants to you explore and collect stuff, but I haven't found a way to effectively view the progress I've made. I'll play some more tomorrow and see if I overlooked something. Anyway, I can't wait for the bigger games; still need to pick up some games that are already out, but I've spent enough for the coming weeks.
