I’m expecting the system to launch at £400 though.

Depends what it does/how impressive it seems. I spend quite a lot on gaming so my "max" would be a lot higher than what the average person would pay. If it did absolutely everything I'd want, I'd probably stretch to about £800 but like I say it'd have to be perfect for me.
That said, I don't think I've ever bought a console at launch so I'd likely wait at least 6 months, although I feel like I might be tempted to jump in day one this time for some reason.
Realistically, I'd possibly be in for £500. I'd be surprised if that's what it sold for though. It has to be lower, surely?
I do wonder if those that have a 'set' figure in mind - like £400 for example - would be put off from buying if Sony's console is much more? Especially if it 'justifies' its costs with the specs, games etc. Would they not buy until the price drops - which maybe 'years' later, miss out on games etc - at least until they do upgrade.
If you look at the specs and price of an Xbox X for example, look at the price of GPU's and CPU's, £400 would seem a 'difficult' price to hit to offer a 'leap' up. Maybe if they go for similar RAM, slightly better GPU and a big jump in CPU, they may hit £400 - if they don't have a Media player, keep storage to a minimum (no more than 1TB) etc - of course the release date may affect the price and specs but to make a console, controller, cables and packaging (all of which adds up), distribute it across the world to sell for £400 and be 'profitable' for them and retailers (although Sony may well be happy to break even and make money from Software and subscriptions), I think is pushing it - especially if you are expecting 12Tflops (double the X) with a Zen/Zen 2 CPU, 16GB RAM at least GDDR5x, 4k HDR Bluray with Dolby Atmos, maybe Dolby Vision support, VRR, HDMI 2.1, a big internal HDD, vapour cooled and a upgraded 'DS5' controller, HDMI 2.1 cable (plus the usual power cable, usb charging cable, booklets and packaging) for £400 - let alone any built in VR box, I do think is pushing it - even if it doesn't release for 2yrs from now.

Can imagine it'll be $500 (£450) and will be BC with PS4 only, would think PS3 PS2 and PS1 will be for PS Now.
If there's a good line up of exclusives I'd pay £450 to £500 but if I can get them on ps4 as well then I may hold as I don't have a 4k tv and not bothered about downgraded graphics
Really, as long as a “killer app” game I want comes out within the first year, I’ll get it day one for $500. The next gen was ushered in for me with Second Son, but in the meantime, I was able to have the launch hype and enjoy some smaller indie games and such for it. Same price, but I had it for longer.
$200. I'll get it near the end of it's life. Since mid life hardware revisions are a thing now I am no longer buying a Sony or MS box day one. (or year one for that matter) I'll buy games and build my library and then pick up the system when they are cheap.
Same here tbh, that's exactly what I did with both the PS4 and XB1. I started buying PS4 games long before I even had a PS4 lol XD.
I'm sure my growing PS4 backlog alone will keep me busy/happy until the PS5 has dropped down to $300 or cheaper.
@seanobi You don’t need to upgrade though? I have a launch PS4 that works great and I have no regrets from getting it or do I have plans to buy a PS4 Pro.
@seanobi The way 8k TV's are looking, Upscaling may well be better handled by the TV anyway. These are utilising AI to upscale and the more upscaling they do, the better they can predict and fill in the missing gaps. I would expect the next generation of consoles to be 8k capable by having HDMI2.1 ports. That doesn't mean I expect games to be 8k but certainly some could be. When you consider Fifa 17 runs at a Native 4k and 60fps on a PS4, there is no where to go with HDMI 2.0. If the PS5 is that much more powerful, Fifa will still be 4k/60 and the system would barely be running and have so much overhead. HDMI 2.1 could offer 8k/60 or maybe 4k/120. With VRR, games could run at 50fps, 113fps, 76fps etc with out any screen tear or 'judder' - even if the frame rate is unlocked and running between 60 and 100fps.
As for the Pro being a waste of money or becoming 'obsolete' after a few years, that is ridiculous. Its been a great 'half step' and delivers the 'best' Playstation gaming experience and has done for the past 26months. It will be the 'best' PS4 console for years after the PS5 launches - all Sony consoles have continued to be supported, continued to be made and sold for years after the next gen comes on the market. There are people that don't buy 'next' gen consoles for at least a year after they launch so are still benefiting from all the advantages that the Pro offers over the PS4 - its not JUST resolution either. The RE2 demo for example runs at 60fps with the odd frame rate drops here and there on the Pro yet on a PS4, its mostly between 40 and 50fps. Some games offer 60fps modes too so not only do you get better visuals, you also get a better, smoother gaming experience with more 60fps games. That may not be important to some people, but for others, frame rates and consistency can make a difference between a playable game and an unplayable mess...

I'd be happy throwing £400 at one. Which is actually £800 cause me and my fiancee have our living room set up with two consoles and two televisions so that's gonna be a rough Christmas.
I would really, really, really like it if they could keep the 400$/€ price point. Of course it was still "high", but this was one of the big reason PS4 did so well IMHO.
