Not sure if this counts, but "Preacher" (graphic novel) is really excellent. Published from 1995 to 2000 by Vertigo, an imprint of DC Comics.... Written by Garth Ennis, who also penned "The Boys".

IMO, although the TV show "The Boys" is much stronger than "Preacher" - I would argue the opposite for the Graphic Novels. I think "Preacher" is GE's finest Graphic Novel work - really great

@CJD87 Absolutely no idea what happened to the "Preacher" TV series or why they felt the need to deviate so massively from the original storyline- the only positive thing about it was the casting which I thought was excellent - Pip Torrens as Herr Starr in particular. I remember in '98 or thereabouts there was talk of a Kevin Smith directed movie with Johnny Depp, Cameron Diaz and Robert Carlisle in the leads. It probably would've been neutered to the point of being unrecognisable - the religious stuff is pretty strong sauce even today.

@LN78 I was ultimately disappointed with the Preacher conversion -> TV, but I'd agree that the casting was pretty stellar.... especially Ruth Negga as Tulip (which I was originally dubious about).

I do think though that Preacher's transition really paved the way for "The Boys", with Preacher being a prototype testing ground for audience appetites - alongside how far a TV show could 'envelope push'. With slightly better marketing, some tighter narrative changes + maybe a couple of casting changes - I think it could have fared better!

RE. Kevin Smith... had no idea that he had intended to helm an adaptation. I wonder if that was pre-Dogma or post-Dogma? I actually really really like Dogma, and think that is still his best work by a landslide (although Mallrats holds a special place in my heart)

@CJD87 I'd imagine post "Dogma" (which was supposed to be the end of the "Askewniverse") when Smith was immersed in all sorts of comics related shenanigans - runs on "Daredevil" and "Green Arrow" and of course his ill fated attempt at a "Superman" screenplay. I'm afraid I'm not much of a fan of "The Boys" comic- I bought the first few issues on the strength of the Ennis name and just wasn't impressed at all - I'm told the show is a significant improvement, though. I just wish I wasn't so superhero'd out - I found "Deadpool 3" an absolute chore to get through recently, for example - or I'd give it a watch. I'll probably binge it when it wraps up after the next season.
PS "Clerks" is still my favourite Smith movie!
