20. Fez (PS4)

Fez has been around longer than the PS4, but Phil Fish's puzzle platformer has stood the test of time. It remains a brilliantly unique game, with its dimension-flipping core mechanic leading to some astonishing twists and turns. As you run and jump through the (seemingly) 2D world, the game unfolds a grander mystery that's a joy to discover. It's a poster child for indie games for a reason.

19. Slay the Spire (PS4)

Slay the Spire is a roguelike deckbuilder, something that many might shy away from, but it's fantastic. Each character has their own pool of cards you may find on each run, and you can discover some amazing synergies that'll see you wiping the floor with enemies. With so many random elements and new strategies to find, the replay value is through the roof. Its art isn't the greatest, but it's a seriously smartly designed game from top to bottom.

18. Kena: Bridge of Spirits (PS4)

Kena: Bridge of Spirits is a blend of action and platforming that feels distinctly old school. If you enjoyed the likes of Jak & Daxter back on PS2, you'll find a lot to like in this charming adventure. You'll explore a lush world, collect adorable Rot creatures, solve environmental puzzles, and engage in surprisingly tough combat. A really enjoyable game from start to finish.

17. Death's Door (PS4)

Playing as a crow charged with reaping the souls of evil beings, Death's Door is a fantastic marriage of top-down adventure games and Souls-like action. Everything here is executed wonderfully — the combat is snappy and responsive, the world is an enticing place to explore, and its presentation is great throughout. The interconnected map slowly unfurls as you defeat bosses and probe for secrets, and exudes a winning charm despite its subject matter.

16. Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun (PS4)

15. Resogun (PS4)

Housemarque is a studio known for its arcade games, and Resogun remains one of its best. Like a modern day Defender, you're tasked with blasting away screens full of baddies while rescuing the last of humanity. It's a gorgeous shoot-'em-up with responsive gameplay, endless replayability, and supremely satisfying visuals. If you like a good old fashioned score-chaser, get Resogun played.

14. Stray (PS4)

Cat lovers agree: Stray is a delight. This game has you playing as a little cat who winds up lost in a mysterious walled-in city inhabited by robots. You're lured in by the novelty of playing as a nimble feline, jumping across rooftops and knocking things to the floor, but you'll also be hooked by a surprisingly intriguing sci-fi narrative. Featuring lovely presentation some dense places to explore, this short but sweet game is a treat.

13. Hotline Miami (PS4)

The pulsating soundtrack, the acid trip visuals, the unapologetic gore — Hotline Miami is a game that's been copied but never truly replicated. A modern classic, this top-down mobster murder-'em-up is brutal in more ways than one. It's a thrill ride from the word go, and a must-play for anyone who considers themselves an adrenaline junkie.

12. Outer Wilds (PS4)

Outer Wilds is a fascinating indie puzzle game. The universe is trapped in a time loop right before disaster strikes, and it's up to you to figure out what's going on and how to put a stop to it. The mind-boggling bit is that the miniature star system is simulated with physics, meaning the planets are following their orbits, and all have varying gravity depending on their mass. You're tasked with traveling (seamlessly) to each place, finding their secrets, and putting all the pieces together to uncover one big mystery. It's great.

11. Dead Cells (PS4)

If roguelikes are more your thing, you can’t do much better than Dead Cells. Its pixel art visuals could turn one or two parties off, but they’d be missing out on some of the best customisation and unlocks in a game that refuses to stay dead. Spectacular boss fights are a highlight, while the dynamic levels that change upon every run offer up a challenge no matter what’s put in front of you.
