10. Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition (PS4)

Developer Drinkbox Studios struck gold with Guacamelee, a side-scrolling Metroidvania with a comical Mexican wrapper. The Super Turbo Championship Edition is that same great game along with all its DLC bundled in and some extra content for good measure. Playing as Juan, you explore a vibrant, interconnected world that slowly opens up as you earn new abilities. These luchador powers double up as combat and traversal mechanics, with the game leaning into fights and exploration equally. It's great fun solo, but you can also play with up to three friends in co-op, which adds to the colourful chaos.

9. What Remains of Edith Finch (PS4)

From the makers of TowerFall Ascension, Celeste is a pure platformer that provides a stern challenge. Using a straightforward set of moves, it does a lot with very little, but it's not just gameplay where it impresses. Madeline's climb up Celeste Mountain is both literal and metaphorical as she struggles to overcome her inner demons. Wonderfully pairing a touching story with rock solid platforming, this is one indie adventure that'll stay with you.

7. Undertale (PS4)

Undertale might not look like much, but it tells one of PS4's most memorable stories. You've fallen into the sealed-off land of monsters, and embark on a quest to get home, but you also hold the key to breaking the barrier between worlds. The story is carried by a brilliant supporting cast of characters that help and hinder you on your journey, and the unique combat turns the RPG formula on its head. Subversive, ingenious, and dripping with personality, Undertale is not to be missed.

6. Shovel Knight (PS4)

A retro style platformer, Shovel Knight exceeds the genre's usual expectations with its imaginative characters and cool story moments. Flawless visual and audio work help make the release feel effortlessly elegant, while its accessible controls mean that anyone can enjoy it.

4. Hollow Knight: Voidheart Edition (PS4)

At first glance it's easy to pin down Hollow Knight as just another 2D metroidvania that boasts a steep challenge, but it's much more than that. There's a fantastic sense of wonder to Hollow Knight — everything that you see and do in this meticulously crafted title is brilliantly contextualised, resulting in an adventure that oozes charm, character, and memorable moments.

3. Hades (PS4)

PlayStation users had to wait a little while to play Hades, but it was certainly worth the patience. Supergiant Games' rogue-like dungeon crawler is every bit as good as you've heard. It effortlessly weaves an intriguing storyline into the looping structure, ingeniously building a character-driven plot that evolves as you delve deeper into the Underworld. Gameplay is responsive and fast, with each weapon and upgrade providing you with all kinds of fun opportunities. Rogue-like games aren't for everyone, but Hades is up there with the absolute best the genre has to offer.

2. Inside (PS4)

Inside is 2D platforming perfection, but it’s the ending that we all remember it for. After two or so hours of impressive puzzle-solving and hints that something isn’t quite right, the game goes off the rails with a 20-minute sequence that is perhaps one of the most memorable of the PS4 generation. An incredible game that has cemented Playdead’s position among the gaming greats.

1. Stardew Valley (PS4)

If you're in the market for some peace and relaxation, Stardew Valley is well worth a look. A pixelated sandbox that lets you play at your own pace, you're left to revitalise the family farm, interact with a cast of cheery characters, and explore your new home.
