10. Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition (PS4)
Developer Drinkbox Studios struck gold with Guacamelee, a side-scrolling Metroidvania with a comical Mexican wrapper. The Super Turbo Championship Edition is that same great game along with all its DLC bundled in and some extra content for good measure. Playing as Juan, you explore a vibrant, interconnected world that slowly opens up as you earn new abilities. These luchador powers double up as combat and traversal mechanics, with the game leaning into fights and exploration equally. It's great fun solo, but you can also play with up to three friends in co-op, which adds to the colourful chaos.
9. What Remains of Edith Finch (PS4)
Giant Sparrow scoffs at the idea of the “walking simulator” with What Remains of Edith Finch - a bona fide indie masterpiece. As you explore the confines of an abandoned family home, you’ll come across scenes that transport you to all manner of different worlds. From the bathtub to the fishing cannery, it’s a special experience unlike any other.
8. Celeste (PS4)
From the makers of TowerFall Ascension, Celeste is a pure platformer that provides a stern challenge. Using a straightforward set of moves, it does a lot with very little, but it's not just gameplay where it impresses. Madeline's climb up Celeste Mountain is both literal and metaphorical as she struggles to overcome her inner demons. Wonderfully pairing a touching story with rock solid platforming, this is one indie adventure that'll stay with you.
7. Undertale (PS4)
Undertale might not look like much, but it tells one of PS4's most memorable stories. You've fallen into the sealed-off land of monsters, and embark on a quest to get home, but you also hold the key to breaking the barrier between worlds. The story is carried by a brilliant supporting cast of characters that help and hinder you on your journey, and the unique combat turns the RPG formula on its head. Subversive, ingenious, and dripping with personality, Undertale is not to be missed.
6. Shovel Knight (PS4)
A retro style platformer, Shovel Knight exceeds the genre's usual expectations with its imaginative characters and cool story moments. It's a colourful, rock solid adventure, and is now enormous thanks to multiple free updates. These have brought co-op play, a VS mode, and new playable heroes with their own campaigns, making Shovel Knight an easy recommendation if you're looking for an old school adventure with modern sensibilities.
5. Journey (PS4)
There's nothing quite like Journey. A game that everyone should experience at least once, thegamecompany's emotional tale is shockingly cohesive, and is destined to provoke a different response from everyone that plays it. Its simplicity is its real strength, and it's a perfect example of how several brilliant ideas can fuse to form an uncompromising, definitive whole. Flawless visual and audio work help make the release feel effortlessly elegant, while its accessible controls mean that anyone can enjoy it.
4. Hollow Knight: Voidheart Edition (PS4)
At first glance it's easy to pin down Hollow Knight as just another 2D metroidvania that boasts a steep challenge, but it's much more than that. There's a fantastic sense of wonder to Hollow Knight — everything that you see and do in this meticulously crafted title is brilliantly contextualised, resulting in an adventure that oozes charm, character, and memorable moments.
3. Hades (PS4)
PlayStation users had to wait a little while to play Hades, but it was certainly worth the patience. Supergiant Games' rogue-like dungeon crawler is every bit as good as you've heard. It effortlessly weaves an intriguing storyline into the looping structure, ingeniously building a character-driven plot that evolves as you delve deeper into the Underworld. Gameplay is responsive and fast, with each weapon and upgrade providing you with all kinds of fun opportunities. Rogue-like games aren't for everyone, but Hades is up there with the absolute best the genre has to offer.
2. Inside (PS4)
Inside is 2D platforming perfection, but it’s the ending that we all remember it for. After two or so hours of impressive puzzle-solving and hints that something isn’t quite right, the game goes off the rails with a 20-minute sequence that is perhaps one of the most memorable of the PS4 generation. An incredible game that has cemented Playdead’s position among the gaming greats.
1. Stardew Valley (PS4)
If you're in the market for some peace and relaxation, Stardew Valley is well worth a look. A pixelated sandbox that lets you play at your own pace, you're left to revitalise the family farm, interact with a cast of cheery characters, and explore your new home. It's a laid back life sim that's perfect for some stress-free PS4 sessions. A dedicated multiplayer update even allows you to sow the seeds of friendship and farm it up together.

Streets of rage 4 and darkest dungeon is the 2 best indie games ever.word up son
No man's sky a worthy shout out.
My choice in year 2022.
I rated 8/10.
Lol no Cuphead?
Best Indie game of all time is Outer Wilds and it's on PS4... Not in the top 20?
Also Disco Elysium didn't make the top 20? Ouch.
Where's Subnautica? Again not in the top 20, seriously my tastes must be so niche.
I can see why Stardew Valley is tippy top, love that game but not my favourite.
Both "Guacamelee: Super Turbo Championship Edition" and "Guacamelee 2" failed to make this list. How is that possible? Is Drinkbox Studios not Indie enough?
Darkest dungeon ancestral edition and streets of rage 4 is the best indie games ever made.word up son
20 is not enough for all the shoutouts I'd want to give for this list.
Why do people love Journey so much? It’s not a proper game. It requires no thought or reflexes and can be completed in a couple of hours
For me:

7. Shovel Knight
8. Cuphead
9. Firewatch
10. The Messenger
11. Kingdom: Two Crowns
12. Stray

20. Crosscode
Love indies. I’ve got a log of indie titles in a spreadsheet that I’ve been updating the last decade or so… because I am very clearly a nerd. Always happy to share a list though!
any top list without cuphead on it is criminal. perhaps it was never reviewed for this site and omitted. fix that.
Is Cuphead indie tho?
@mohilrai Actually, #14 is the OG Guac! I would be bummed if they left both off as well. Maybe this needs to be a top 50, too many good games out there! I also want to see Transistor, Streets of Rage 4 and Tower Fall Ascension!
I would rate Hollow Knight as #1 and The Witness as #2.
And Journey is garbage. Critics' love for that game always makes me think of The Emperor's New Clothes. You can't admit to being the person who didn't "get it." Inside is sort of similar, although that game is at least more interesting to play. Just my opinion, of course.
@PVTHudson Outer Wilds is #14 on the list. That game is quite an experience! My kids watched me play through it and we were all glued to it for a week as I tried to figure everything out.
@sketchturner looks like it's been climbing since I commented, it's now up to 12. It should keep going up the more people dip in. If it went to PS Plus I bet it would breach the top 5.
As for Journey it was fine. Best thing about it was a skit done by Critical Miss at the time...

Well I've played more than half of them and have a few more currently installed so pretty happy with that.
Less happy that Enter the Gungeon doesn't get the love I clearly think it deserves, but that's just me.
half of these are not even as good as ender lilies
new 2d metroidvania soulslike ttailer always been compared to blasphemous by commenters on yt
This is inherently a very subjective subject. A lot of my favorites didn't make the list, and many overrated titles of course were on there. But I'm fine with it.
I enjoyed The Talos Principle, but my God it's long. After solving 90+ puzzles I had my fill and just wanted to see the end credits.
