When does the Fallout 4 Next Gen Update come out? When can you play the new version of Fallout 4 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S? With excitement surrounding the Fallout IP at record fever pitch following its well-received TV adaptation on Amazon Prime, publisher Bethesda is bringing back Fallout 4 with a next-gen update. In this Fallout 4 guide, we're going to reveal the Next Gen Update Release Times and answer the question: when can you play the new version?
What Are the Fallout 4 Next-Gen Update Release Times?
The Next-Gen Update for Fallout 4 is out now. For more information, please refer to the following article:
What Download Size Is the Fallout 4 Next-Gen Update?
On PS5, the Next Gen Update for Fallout 4 weighs in at 65.5GB.
What Upgrades Does the Fallout 4 Next-Gen Update Have?
Bethesda has confirmed the Fallout 4 version being made available for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S will support up to 60fps and increased resolutions across Performance Mode and Quality Mode. It'll also have stability improvements and extra fixes. Prior to release, it's impossible to confirm what those resolutions are, but the hope is Fallout 4 will run at 60fps in as close to 4K as possible.
How Do You Upgrade Fallout 4 from PS4 to PS5?
How you upgrade Fallout 4 from a PS4 version to PS5 depends on how you own the game. If you have a digital copy bought from the PS Store, you'll be able to simply head back into the digital marketplace and search for Fallout 4. Once the PS5 version is released and surfaced, button through to where you're offered the Download option. Replacing where the price normally is, you shouldn't encounter any issues upgrading.
If you own a physical copy of Fallout 4 on a disc, you need to first insert the PS4 disc into your PS5 console. Then, go to the Game Hub on the system's main menu screen and click on the three horizontal dots. Click the View Product option and then you should be taken to a new screen where you're offered the Free PS5 Upgrade. This will download Fallout 4 for PS5, but you'll need to keep the PS4 disc inside your PS5 console whenever you want to play the PS5 version because it acts as an activation key.

I wonder if it will have it's own trophy list or share the ps4 versions.
@Lyedecker It's a new native PS5 version so it'll have its own separate Trophy list.
@LiamCroft Awesome, thank you!
Carry over your save?
Will it be like an upgrade to the ps4 version, or will have to install it seperately and uninstall the ps4 version?
@Fill3rup_ My guess is, as it's a native PS5 game now you'll have to download the app separately.
One hell of an article when you don’t have facts for most of it.
I know that’s not your fault and it’s an impending release which is pretty dominant in the news but yeah, not much known 😂
@Splat yeah this is the big one for me, my save files are very far into the game with lots of settlement building, so if they don't carry over I won't be playing the PS5 version and will just have to hope they fix the PS4 version.
@carlos82 I think they will, that's often the case with 1:1 PS5 updates.
If Sony decides to continue with backwards compatibility with PS6, I really hope it sorts out the backend side of things to be an automatic process with any cross-gen upgrades.
The fact upgrading requires instructions is just such an archaic design. I am sure Save file transfer won't be automatic, either. Having a bunch of Trophy dings pop-off when you start the upgrade is also annoying because you have to have a new, but identical Trophy list for the same game simply because it's the new console's version.
Take notes from PC and Xbox on this aspect, Sony.
Have they announced whether the DLC is getting the next gen treatment? Can't see anything about it anywhere.
I've always meant to go back to Fallout 4 as I never finished it - didn't like the base building aspects or constantly having to go back and protect settlements. Whereas I loved the freedom of 3 and New Vegas. However I've since learned you can pretty much ignore most of that so this may be perfect for me... If only I didn't have a never ending backlog!
@sorteddan You really don't HAVE to do the settlement stuff or protect the bases. I've played through the game a couple of times and really only utilized already-built workbenches and power armor stations.
Always appreciate the timezone assortment you provide. Quite helpful for us in the US.
Do we have it confirmed or not if the free ps plus or ps plus extra versions will include a free upgrade?
@Smash41 Bethesda hasn't said anything but the DLC will get the same treatment too — it's all included.
@LiamCroft are the trophy lists the same for the ps5 version? The trophy for those nuka cola drinks was a real pain in the posterior 😁
It's been a while since I last played Fallout 4 so I'm looking forward to this update.
@carlos82 what is there to fix for PS4 version? That game is old, and long time ago finished.
@REALAIS somehow it's been broken recently on Playstation 5 and installing one of the dlc's makes it crash on startup and plenty of textures linked to Nuka World are now purple

I wouldn't ever call a Bethesda game finished.
@Mikey856 We won't know until tomorrow, but I expect it'll be the same Trophy requirements as the PS4 version.
Ok does anyone know if owning the PlayStation Plus copy will let me download the PS5 version tomorrow? Trying to determine if I buy the season pass AND the base game or just the season pass.
@carlos82 Yep, the Automatron and Wastelander Workshop DLCs are broken. Classic Bethesda. Hopefully, that will be fixed with the PS5 version, but it's Bethesda. They refuse to give up on their leaky, broken game engine. So who knows?
@theSpectre I'm just confused as to how it worked for so long and only now it seems to be broken and only on Playstation. I wonder if Sony's back end has contributed, as it treats even the disc version as a different game to the digital and save files aren't compatible across them and perhaps patches and dlc have been swapped around
@carlos82 I think it's a PS5 issue. We've seen a few games behave strangely on PS5. I don't think the DLC breaks on PS4. Bethesda should create a fix, but, being owned by MS, I'm guessing it's not a priority. I guess, on PS5, just stream the DLCs for the PS4 version?
@REALAIS
Tbf, the xbox one version is getting an update so maybe ps4 also.
Don't know about fixes though.
@LiamCroft thanks very muchly
@theSpectre well if its only an issue on PS5 then it probably won't matter tomorrow anyway as we'll all be playing the PS5 version instead
I never actually "finished" FO4 and I've always wanted to Platinum it. Since its pretty cheap on the PS Store and with this upgrade, seems like a perfect time to hop back in.
@LiamCroft looking forward to this but do we know exactly what improvements have been done for the new versions? Is it more than just getting 60fps?
Looking forward to it as I want to beat the game on my PS5 because the PS4 version WITH Far Harbor is crashing on launch and is unplayable for me.
@Zuljaras I’m sure a patch will be incoming
Wasn't this one of the ones we got as part of PS+ back in the day when we upgraded to a PS5? Will this upgrade work for us?
@KundaliniRising333 Unfortunately not, but 60fps and a 4K resolution are assumed. The only official info out of Bethesda has come from the single blog post.
@sorteddan yeah, ditto! The base building always sounded great on paper but I always found it a bit unwieldy and more faff than it was worth. Still, fired it up again the other day to get a head start with a fresh save, and to better appreciate the (hopefully) upgrade in graphics and performance!
Hopefully it fixes the crashing problem on ps5 cuz the ps4 version crashes with the dlc installed
Well it's 8pm and it's still chugging along so no update yet
I tried Fallout 4 back in the day but didn't get into it, the tv series is decent so may give it another look now.
@LiamCroft I love upgrading to the PS5 version and watching a bunch of trophies pop when I fire it up.
I bought it last week and got to the minutemen/ power armour part then as soon as the Deathclaw comes out of the ground it crashed! Then trying to go to the Raiders hangout and got slaughtered then crashed. Went to the Ghoul station (not sure the exact name) and all my clothing disappeared.
Still wanna power through though. Great game but bugs! Agghhhhhhhhhh
@Onearmbandit my deathclaw got trapped in a small hole in the tarmac, so it didn't pose much of a challenge. Kinda felt sorry for it.
@Andee
Haha yeah approaching a stuck deathclaw is a predicament. I’d just swear at it then move on or could annihilate it for the XP.
@Onearmbandit I was hoping I could feed it and, over time, domesticate it. Dogmeat 2.0
@Andee
Yes, very clever.
I'm excited for what is essentially a 'Free Upgrade' on PS5...
But we should remember, this is Bethesda.
I'm expecting this thing to only half work or look just like the PS4 version.
I played this on Series S with FPS boost a while back. It looked crisp and was super smooth, even in downtown Boston with many vertibirds exploding out of the sky.
Hopefully some stuff will be fixed that has kept me from doing a replay of Fallout 4 on my PRO. That is: horrible frames in some downtown locations, poor frames in Far Harbor, raining inside some buildings, and sniper rifle sway and useless scope reticles.
The sniper rifle sways even with full upgrades, max gun skills, and arm braces on each arm, braces that are suppose to negate sway. The bug is that sway only temporarily goes completely away, only to return permanently with no way to remove the sway. Even with no sway the scope reticles are the worst in any game I have played for lining up distant shots.
Mods for the PS4 helps with some issues like removing haze and godrays to improve the colors, the always sunny weather removes the rain in buildings, improves the graphics, and ditches the general over abundance of rain. A scrapping mod allows more clearing of stuff in settlements. However no sniper sway or scope mods to improve sniper rifle use.
Oh well I will see. If not a replay I can still visit an old save file and see how the settlements I built-up are doing.
@LiamCroft gotcha. Thanks.
Also if you already have the ps4 version downloaded do you assume this is likely a completely seperate download rather than an update to the existing ps4 edition?
@zhoont Was wondering this too. I have it through PS Plus, but the UI won't even let me buy the actual game. I tried to click on purchase when it was 4.99, but a menu came up saying I already own the game even though I never bought it
@pyrrhic_victory it let me buy it for $4.99 on the store, so I just bought it & the season pass so I don't have a headache tomorrow when it prompts me to buy the PS5 copy for $20 or some *****
@Loamy cool. Thanks
@LiamCroft it’s a new trophy list, but will the earned PS4 trophies transfer to the PS5 list as happened with Spider-man Remastered?
@KundaliniRising333 I had Skyrim PS4 installed on my PS5. When the new-gen update was released it installed a separate PS5 version. For a while I had both a PS4 and PS5 version installed! The PS5 version did not carry over my trophies.
I can’t see them giving the free upgrade to the PS plus extra version but maybe I will be proven wrong
It's my day off, where is it omg
@Bamila the updates are out now on Xbox ( 7 including dlc updates ) so shouldn't be too long on ps too if not already
It's live now! Go download it
I think the PS5 version's there too! At least, I hope that's what I'm downloading..
Downloading the GOTY version now! I’ve never played any of the Fallouts, but strangely excited for this.
I had the base game as part of the PS+ Collection, but didn’t mind paying the £15 for the game + season pass / expansions.
@zhoont Smart, because this is exactly what is happening I bought the physical copy at launch, got the PS Plus version at some point to not have to use the disc anymore, gave the disc to a friend, and now it's asking me to pay $20 for the upgrade. Good times.
I don't recall seeing anywhere that there were rules as to who would get it for free or not, or that it'd cost money, only that it was a "free upgrade".
I just read that Bethesda said on Discord this was a mistake and PS Plus players should get it as well, so, fingers crossed!
I've got the digital game of fallout 4 with all DLC went to download it earlier it said £15-99 to upgrade no option to do anything, so obviously Bethesdas buggy releases again. I'll have to wait for a fix cause I own the game & I'm not giving them more money 😂
@gonzilla hmm, good to know. Hope it gets sorted, and I'm glad I don't have to worry and wait.
I have the GOTY physical PS4 disc, and it is not giving me an option to upgrade for free. It seems to me it is reading my install as PS Plus version. I deleted and re-installed from disk, and still no upgrade option 😡
