Update #2: Hideo Kojima has enjoyed visits from PlayStation’s marketing brass, PS Studios chief, and now PlayStation’s overall overlord, Jim Ryan. Concluding a flurry of office drop-ins, the auteur has posed with Jim Ryan, suggesting an announcement of Death Stranding 2 may be imminent.
We assume this will be the last of the legendary developer’s visits from Sony bigwigs, and at this point we anticipate a reveal before the end of the year.
Update #1: Now Hideo Kojima has received a visit from PS Studios boss Hermen Hulst! The former Guerrilla Games managing director is currently in Tokyo for work, and stopped by at the new Kojima Productions studio for a catch-up. We have to imagine Death Stranding 2 was on the agenda, although it’s worth remembering that the pair struck up a friendship when Hulst provided Kojima with a USB stick containing the Decima Engine’s source code at the very beginning of the original Death Stranding’s development.
Earlier in the day, Kojima had a conference call with Elle Fanning, who’ll star in his next project, and The Game Awards host Geoff Keighley.
Original Story: Two of the top executives from PlayStation’s marketing department, Eric Lempel and Craig Malanka, paid a visit to Kojima Productions’ new offices this week. The trip comes amid heavy rumours regarding Death Stranding 2, with a producer seemingly letting the sequel slip last week, before attempting to walk back the error.
Industry auteur Hideo Kojima has multiple projects in production, including one for Xbox, which is complicating current speculation about his next game. However, he recently confirmed that actress Elle Fanning will star in an upcoming project, alongside another mysterious actress, assumed to be Shioli Kutsuna.
While it’s far from confirmed, it’s looking likely this title will be a sequel to Death Stranding, which Norman Reedus had already accidentally leaked. Lempel and Malanka are likely in town to discuss marketing strategies with Kojima, as this will presumably be another enormous project for PlayStation to promote.

Also, the same guys took him out for dinner a few weeks ago around his B-day, it's DS2 guys.
Need to revisit and complete the original - it struck an uncomfortable tone during lockdown that I couldn’t handle. But now we have impending nuclear conflict? It’s time!
My personal favourite PS4 exclusive so I'd very much like to see a sequel
Great. I hope to be reunited with my BB, never did I feel there was a time to cut the cord
Yeah I’d be well up for this. One of the most glorious subversions of fetch quests I’ve played.
Time to look out the hiking boots again. Loved Death Stranding, it was an experience not many games can match!
The strand-type genre has exploded since the original game released, is there really room for a sequel in such a crowded market???
I never made it past the first hour or so of the first game - is it worth going back to ahead of this?
@itsfoz as someone who thought this game looked ridiculous, awful and did nothing but bash it for its first year, I can say it’s truly a wonderful, unique experience. The only reason I decided to try it was because Chris Ray Gun was in the exact same boat as me, but he played it and adored it, so I grabbed it on sale and I have never been so happy to be wrong about a game. It’s well worth your time.
As much as I’d like to play this I’m shocked he hasn’t given into people dying for a PT successor.
He changed the genre with a Demo. Very odd he hasn’t been steering directly into horror.
Can’t wait for a new Kojima game. Death Stranding was fantastic and I would love to visit this strange world once again
Sony needs to buy Kojima studios. Along with Square, EA, and From Software.
Death Stranding 2 has immense potential. The first was my first Kojima game and I couldn’t be any happier with my experience. I wonder what direction Kojima will take with DS2. I’m sure whatever he does, I’ll fall in love with. Pumped for any news!
DS is my favorite game of all time, but doesn’t DS2 just leaking out there because of people slipping up sort of seem a little unusual for Kojima, the King of Ruses?
I was in the camp that liked Death Stranding...but I don't want another
I got through Death Stranding 1 somehow...but I don't got it in me for a 2nd. Maybe on a sale.
Cool for fans of the game, it's always great to get more of something you enjoy. I just couldn't get into the game.
I made it far enough to get through my first encounter with the supernatural things and bring BB back to safety. After that I just stopped. I found the gameplay to be tedious and the story to be the usual pompous Kojima storytelling.
Genuinely adore Death Stranding and not just because I'm such a huge Hideo Kojima fan. Each delivery tests your mind on various terrains. It's something I really enjoyed when accepting every delivery planning my best route and then accepting another delivery as it goes closely past my other delivery, sometimes having 3 or even 4 different deliveries on my back at one time. Do I need another ladder or a new fresh set of boots for these deliveries just incase. If you mess up its always all your fault never the games fault, unless you get the unexpected occasional enemies pop up on new parts of the map terrains that you ain't been to yet on story paths. If you ain't keen on being slightly mentally tested in a video game then I don't think DS will ever be for you. I find it to be a really calming, satisfying and rewarding game when you do the many deliveries faultlessly
Death Stranding was my second Kojima game after MGSV which I thoroughly enjoyed. It took me until 2022 to try DS but I ended up absolutely loving it (I mostly did the main quests only). His games aren't for everyone for sure but he's telling stories in his own unique fashion and DS was amazing if a little convoluted. It would make an epic miniseries with the right budget but I'm not sure it needs another game?
Keep bringing the PlayStation gold Kojima and I’ll keep buying. Death stranding took a few hours to get into but ended up being one of my favorite games of the PS4 generation.
I think I'm in the minority, Death Stranding was just ok. It was neat at first to build out the network and figure out the best ways to get from point A to point B, but then it was boring to travel along those paths dozens of times to grind likes and S rank premium deliveries. Add to that how all my paths broke due to different bridge connections which transferring to the PS5 version, I actually feel the director's cut was the worse version for ruining all the work I put into the original.
So I don't think I'll go out of my way for Death Stranding 2. Probably just play it if it lands on PS+.
Looking forward to seeing more finally revealed.
How long before MBG makes a video on this lol.
I can’t wait for this. I’ve played DS and DS:DC together for about 250 hours and it’s only because of my backlog I’m not immediately jumping in for a third playthrough.
Can't wait for it. Death Stranding was excellent. Hyped to see what he'll do next and where the story will go.
While DS is one of my favorite games of all time, I would have liked to see something new from Kojima, especially a horror IP.
Must be there to sign more exclusivity deals and delivering statements from Jim Ryan for Kojima to cut ties with Microsoft because it's bad for competition.
NOTE: Joke
Looking forward to seeing where things go with Death Stranding. It's an acquired taste, of course. I enjoyed the gameplay loop (figuring out the best routes for deliveries and stealth through BT territory).
The story is absolute bonkers, too - but I liked it.
To be interesting, the sequel would need to be so far removed from the original it would be better spent on a new IP.
Traded Breath of the Wild for Death Stranding, and I couldn't have been happier. Wasn't a fan of BotW's monotony, but Death Stranding was just able to scratch an itch I didn't know I had. Loved it (the final hour was a bit of a drag)
I'm a huge Metal Gear Solid fan. I remember playing the demo on the official PlayStation magazine way back, eagerly waiting the game release and getting it for my birthday later that year (I think, at least, it was my next birthday).
I was excited for and had each game on release afterwards until MGS4, by which point I'd stopped playing consoles. I did eventually catch up just before the PS4 release.
I was a huge Kojima fan.
I don't like Death Stranding. It's just.. weird. And, you know, the aforementioned "I love MGS" paragraph? It's still weird, even compared. I now find it hard to be excited about whatever Kojima is doing because it might be another weird project, featuring TV stars
I loved the original. A truly original open world game in a congested market.
Still not really sure that a) I want a sequel and b) it would be possible (even for a Kojima produced game) to have anything resembling a coherent narrative.
Prequel maybe?
I really, really hope it’s DS in space as I speculated when Kojima showed that spaceship thing. That’d be epic. In any case, I’m interested in any project that has Kojima involved. I mean, videogame related projects.
It'll be interesting to find out whatever the game is called at the Game Awards.
Well my current gaming habits involve building roads and putting up zip lines next to those roads to zoom across the map, creating a shared mega network of fast travel for cargo 😁
The story is taking over a lot more now though, and I'll have to get back to that to decide whether I want a Death Stranding 2 or not. Love it so far though, as weird as it is, love the depth of the world/worlds created in it too. And the art direction, the design of everything and the style it oozes, the cast and everything else Kojima usually nails by being incredibly Kojima about development.
You could say that Death Stranding is Otterly fantastic
Why is this guy all over the news, without ever having any actual news to share.
What's next? "Hideo might have nodded to someone on his way to work"
I'm sure we are getting Death Stranding 2 but how is Kojima being visited by someone high up in Playstation an indication of a specific game? All this indicates is that Hulst and Kojima are still on good terms.
Calling it right now, Elle is Louise (you know who she is if you finished the game) and it will take place many years after the ending of the first game.
@Humaniac Its nothing compared to the Sakurai stalking over at Nintendo Life's community
What a waste of resources
I hope it's something else I really didn't like death stranding. I beat it to completion but didn't understand the story or what was going on the cut scenes were way too long too I couldn't wait for the ending credits to roll. I'm a fan of all the MGS games though
@Colour
Like a year and a half ago Kojima went on a little mini tangent on Twitter about how angry he was that a game he was working on got canned. He didn't give any more detail, but it's been long speculated it was a horror title that either the rest of his dev team didn't like or that Sony wasn't impressed with in the initial pitch.
Removed - flaming/arguing; user is banned
We already know about death stranding 2 after that actress Ballsed up lol
@Marquez wash down with Desert Strike on Megadrive 😀
Would be cool if it was a cross platform Sony funded game on MS infrastructure.. one can dream..
It's gonna be DS2.
Does Jim Ryan typically photo op with his game developers? I almost feel like there’s more to this than just DS2 now. I know I’m big on Kojima conspiracies, but this just seems like there’s more than just a game trailer incoming.
@somnambulance He has posed with Bungie as well. But usually, it is mainly Hermen Hulst visiting the studios. That said, Koji Pro is just across the street (literally) from Sony HQ, so he probably combined it with a visit.
Seeing them next to each other makes me realise how much I like Hideo and how much I dislike Jim.
Anyone else think this was a pr thing by Jim after seeing how popular hermens photo was ? And he wanted some of that
I thought death stranding ended perfectly. The only way I could see a sequel would be if Elle Fanning was playing Louise
@IOI just seen your comment, thinking the same thing
Imagine if the next photo he posts is instead:
With Snake
![Untitled](https://www.koi-nya.net/img/subidos_posts/2012/09/El-hijo-secreto-de-Hideo-Kojima-y-los-juegos-de-Konami-en-el-TGS.jpg)
I guess Hideo has a better relationship with Hermen given how he was treated to beers, whilst Jim only got a photo op in the stairwell (joking)
Wish he was making a new IP instead of a DS2 sequel.
YES!... I have been hoping for DS2. Type of games that keep me in gaming. Hopefully has the same strong cast as DS1.
Lets go Kojima... keep blurring that line. Done more than most to provide the status Digital Artist should have in gaming (and the art form in general)
@Kingleo31 Absolutley the worst possible thing that can happen. Stop pushing this already.
Would be down for a sequel with more creepy monsters. But personally I'd prefer if it never gets a sequel. Really loved the ending.
Looking forward to the reveal on December 8
@Kingleo31 should've bought Square back in 1999-2001 when they needed support. Too late for From software as they've mostly worked with Bandai Namco, and they have a parent company since 8 years ago. Not sure if there's enough money to buy EA though. So all these seem more like Dreams to me
@Humaniac it's not that much irrelevant. Remember that Crash t-shirt, and less than a year later the announcement for the trilogy?
Could not be any less excited for a sequel to Death Stranding and another iteration of Kojima's hubris.
Whenever I see Jim Ryan all I think is I miss Shawn Layden.
@HeeHo Or Jack Tretton or Andrew House or Kaz Hirai. I do miss the days when Playstation were Japanese...
Actually that photo looks like it should be in a caption competition.
Hideo Kojima: Who brought the accountant?
or
JR: What do you think about increasing PS exclusives to £100 each?
DAAAAAAMN is this guy overrated.
