Developer Larian Studios hasn't taken the foot off the gas since Baldur's Gate 3 launched, pushing out the second hotfix of the week and the ninth since the game launched on PC at the start of August, with those coming to the PS5 iteration, which launched in September. That's in addition to three full patches, the most recent of which (amongst many other things) improved PlayStation performance, as well as introducing the character-editing Magic Mirror.
Hotfix 9, then, expands the utility of the Magic Mirror, which lets you edit your character's appearance, but now allows you to change your name as well (always a contentious subject for the PlayStation faithful). Hirelings, which are customisable party members who lack the personality of BG3's bespoke Companions, can also now have their appearance altered through the Mirror, which is appreciated.
Split-screen players on PS5 should no longer experience an issue that could cause a black screen when listening in on another player's dialogue. Pro-tip for anyone who doesn't know (we wish we'd learned a dozen hours sooner): Go to your Settings, under Gameplay, and enable the Eavesdrop feature to join your partner's conversations automatically.
We've listed the full list of changes below and REDACTED the spoilers Larian will occasionally include, which we like to think is to keep us on our toes.
- You can now use the Magic Mirror on hirelings.
- You can now change your name through the Magic Mirror.
- Fixed a rare crash that could occur when unloading or quick-loading a game.
- Fixed an issue causing GPU crashes on PS5 Vulkan.
- Fixed the Guardian Statue repeatedly falling into a chasm, causing the server to stall.
- Fixed a split-screen issue on PS5 that could cause a black screen when listening in on a dialogue.
- Fixed unpreparing spells, not removing their buffs if the spell was upcasted.
- Fixed buffs being removed by unpreparing spells if the buff came from a different source (e.g. a scroll).
- Fixed some character positions and animations breaking if you skip lines in certain dialogues.
- Fixed the previews not working correctly in the Accessibility options.
- Fixed an issue causing Minthara's romance to trigger unreliably.
- Fixed Minthara's dialogue after you REDACTED not triggering properly when you talk to her.
- Fixed the Adamantine Splint Armour, sometimes making your legs transparent.
- Fixed a geometry stretching bug introduced in Hotfix 8 on Vulkan.
- Fixed characters showing up in their underwear in some intimate scenes, even if you have nudity enabled.
- Fixed Feign Death causing an infinite leave–join combat loop in certain circumstances.
- Fixed prices in dialogues not displaying correctly in savegames that were made while the price was on screen.
- Optimised the line-of-sight system for entities with no sight range, like items.

Every time I try to get to grips with this I just get my backside handed straight back to me. Should I just give up? I managed to platinum Bloodborne but this… I can’t figure everything out.
@Mikey856 what are u having a hard time with I'm on act 3
@C25CLOUD I’m finding it difficult to win fights against more than 2/3 enemies. The battles start and loads of stuff just happens, then it’ll switch to me and I’ll walk towards an enemy and get stuck or fall over or something ridiculous. Then I’m a sitting duck. I’m also very time poor so finding it difficult to learn everything I’m guessing I need to learn, like what defensive spells I’ll need to use in a given fight against a given enemy, these sorts of situations? Or maybe the fact I was never into d&d just means it’s too complicated and complex for the laymen lol. I’m about to give up with it already I’m all honesty.
Im really hoping couch co-op is no longer a broken mess.
@somnambulance what's been the issue I'm playing with my wife and haven't run into any issues yet
@Mikey856 Mate. I know what you mean. I completed Bloodbourne and DLC too! I love difficult but fair games. Larian games are not only challenging, they are on another level of "build" compared to From Software games (and nearly everything else out there I'd say).
I have just started playing Larian's previous game, Divinity Original Sin 2 (DOS2). Then I will play Baldur's Gate 3 (BG3).
Mate! It was initially tough. Rough. Opaque. I spent some time watching Fextralife's YouTube Guides. The reward for doing so has been SO GOOD. I understand it now when before I was ignorant about CRPGs.
The combat is very, very cool when you get to know the details.
DOS2 may well be a top 10 game for me (and I am only on Act 1 of 4).
Everything in DOS2 seems hand crafted and meaningful. There is no filler. And BG3 is regarded as a better game.
My advice. Spend a couple of hours (I know!) watching some Fextralife YouTube guides. They are enlightening, the guy does a decent job.
Then give it another go! BG3 may still not be for you but at least you tried.
@CreepingShadow When my wife and I played at launch, we were having issues with certain game mechanics not working, infinite load screens, hard crashes, and random deaths. My initial experience was sort of frustrating, so I decided to wait on it a few months after that and enjoy the rest of the year’s releases. Even if it’s a 10/10, given that start, it simply can’t be my GotY due to the start being four disappointing a frustrating experiences, but I’d like to give it another try when I’ve finished the rest of my games for the year. I’ll be back to it in four relatively short games.
@somnambulance fair enough. I got it around 3-4 weeks after it launched and we haven't ran into anything as of yet. I think regardless of the issues it could still be your best game of the year that's just my opinion I've been blown away really.
@CreepingShadow I’m willing to give it another shot. And you’re right that it could end up my GotY despite the issues. Took me ages to play Witcher 3, but I’d give that one perfect marks, for instance. Regardless, I’ve got it planned to play this and this alone for 3 months, so I’m hoping it hits the spot, so I don’t need to buy any other games November-January! Lol!
@somnambulance the Mac update from 9/22 fixed the terrible split screen issues. Been totally fine since then for me.
@activedutygamer Thanks for the tip. I’ll be back to it shortly after I finish Mirage, Sonic, Mario, and Alan Wake. I very well could be onto my second attempt for it by the second week of November.
@a_brave_new_geek I appreciate that massively mate thank you!! I’ll watch some videos like you say see if I can finally get to grips with it, i love the idea of the game so I’ve got to give it one last try
@Mikey856 I know some people are opposed but I’ve just been playing on Explorer mode and really enjoying it. First time with a game like this and wanted to enjoy playing it and appreciate the story instead of getting constantly frustrated.
Since the latest hot fix, I'm now having split screen issues. Whenever my daughter listens to my conversation, when done, her side camera follows me. She then has to talk to someone to kick it back to her.
@whitejessegpfc explorer mode? What is this you talk about? Tell me more 😁
@Mikey856 I believe you can change difficulty at any time in a playthrough
Oh it’s just the difficulty level. I assumed it turned the game mechanics into Skyrim mode or something 🤣🤦🏻♂️
@Mikey856 Good man! I have a mate that finished Elden Ring though he has just bailed on Baldur's Gate 3 so it's not for everyone.
Hope you'll get to the decision point that works for you.
