Marvel's Spider-Man 2 was released on Friday, and no doubt many players spent the weekend blissfully swinging through the streets of New York City. Others, specifically players who picked up physical editions, ran into issues attempting to install the game to their PS5 from that shiny, hopeful disk.
A thread on Reddit chronicling the issue swiftly popped up, with another mirroring it on ResetEra (thanks, IGN). It's hard to say how widespread the issue is, as most of the players affected appear to be in Europe. Still, the story seems to be the same: The progress bar peters out (pardon the pun) at precisely 36% during installation.
Users have tried reinstallation, disconnecting their PS5s from the internet and, installing offline, even hard resetting the console, but to no avail. One Redditor claimed to get the same results after picking up a new disk at GameStop, which suggests that this could be a batch issue, but that's purely speculation on our part.
Neither PlayStation nor developer Insomniac Games has yet to comment on the problem, but IGN has reached out for a response. We'll update this page once we learn more. Did you pick up a physical copy of Marvel's Spider-Man 2? How was the installation process? Clamber on down into the comments section below.

No issues here. What a shame. They are such good developers. Interwebs will eviscerate them
Been playing away on disc myself all weekend. No issues at all.
Such a shame for anyone affected.
Reminds me of the save bug in The Last of Us when it first launched on PS3. For the first day the autosave was borked and wasn't saving anything after a certain point.
Lots of progress was lost before folks realised.
It was patched pretty quickly though.
That's one way to push people to digital but if I take my tin foil hat off it is probably just a production issue. Disappointing for those that bought it physical and can't play as at this point it is just a very expensive coaster. Hopefully those affected will get sorted in one way shape or form but it's a shame they couldn't play on release after coughing up the cash.
no reason for discs anymore unless it’s a collectible special edition or something
Apparently Miles has a Cuban flag in his room that they’re fixing, cause he’s Puerto Rican. Surely an oversight fixed if they had anyone actually of that heritage on QA?
@nomither6 You mean there is no reason to release faulty products, surely.
Don't try to peg this on the customers.
Got mine from PS Direct and it works fine. Don't know if it matters where the affected players got theirs from.
It’s like 30 (unconfirmed) reports out of millions. Easy enough for Sony to just send them discs
@LN78 you got me. i forgot that you can re-sell and trade in physical games. but i bet it’s possible with digital it just hasn’t happened yet
@nomither6 Digital game trading and selling is too much of a headache, you’d have to create a whole system to revoke licenses and transfer them and so forth. Theoretically it’s possible but it would open up Sony to more security vulnerabilities too.
@nessisonett I'm guessing they would have to use the exsisting refund system then credit the user the specified amount of store credit based on the PS trade in pricing structure.
Sucks that this happens but its probably blown way out of proportion and over dramatised like an episode of bellenders for clicks and giggles..
@nomither6 i didnt think you were putting this on the consumers to be honest and i dont know why sony wont impliment a system like steam does where you can sell on your digital key..
@Northern_munkey thats why i ignored the other comment, because i wasnt. and i dont know either, but tbh sony is always late to do things.
@nessisonett security vulnerabilities? damn. youre right, sony should sit back and maybe let m$ take a crack at it first, we dont want to repeat 2011 again
Another good reason for me to wait for a GOTY version.
Yeah I had no problems at all with my copy
Im in the uk and my disc gets stuck at 36% the update loads until 1 second left then freezes and doesnt install. Contacted Insomniac games 2 days ago via their website and requesting a ticket but had no reply.If you purchase a new game on release day you expect to be able to play it the day you get it. I always buy physical games as once ive completed the game i resell them to put the money towards another game cant do that with a digital download.
@nessisonett its just a flag ,my nephew has an American flag in his room ,he's not American, maybe miles likes cigars
@Ash666 where you get the game?
I have finished he story just from the disc installation (no patches at all).
No problem installing it at all.
@Mephisto2869
my local independent game store Game on in cosham
I’m quite surprised how many bugs and glitches there are (falling through walls/floor). I encountered a new one last night when changing suits and my character turned into a small white cube. Easily fixed with a restart but I don’t expect these kinds of issues from a Sony first party studio.
The game is great though so far.
@nomither6 Clearly someone doesn't have people in their lives that like getting them gifts.
@Mephisto2869 The two flags are almost identical except in colour. It’s a mistake.
@MFTWrecks they’re called gift cards
I went to pick up my preorder Sat morning and the guy behind me was returning his copy saying it wouldn’t download all the way.. took it home and guess I’m a lucky ducker 😅.. hope that father got a good replacement as I unguiltily had fun all weekend
@nessisonett right ok
@ItsBritneyB_tch yeah I fell through the world I was shocked ,took a few seconds to get back in,but your right you just don't expect it.
Installed from disc without even a WHISPER of a problem! Easy peasy lemon squeezy!
@nessisonett Probably 0.0001% will care about this untill one person makes a big fuss about it.
@Flaming_Kaiser About the complete wrong flag being used?
Seems like a few defective discs. It happens. Sucks for those affected. The majority of the claims of the game being buggy are from trolls deliberately trying to break the game and slander it.
I like how you say IGN reached out for a response... Shouldnt you be reaching out too?
Does anyone know if this is still an issue?. I bought the game when it come out and was one of the unlucky ones so returned it. Really wanna play it but cannot be bothered to go through the hassle again if it doesn’t work.
