We're almost halfway through developer Arrowhead's self-imposed 60-day plan to win back the affections of the notoriously raucous Helldivers 2 player base, and the developer has offered a sneak peek at some of the changes in store. Presumably, we can expect the game's next major patch to arrive around 14th October.
As reported by IGN, it seems like Arrowhead has put away the nerf-mallet and taken up the buff-hammer, with the poorly treated flamethrower getting a flat 33% damage increase, as well as increased armour penetration: "Flamer mechanics will be reverted to the state before the Escalation of Freedom update and flame based weapons can now damage heavier enemies like Chargers, Bile Titans, Impalers, and Hulks."
Per Arrowhead, here is a small taste of some of the changes coming to the game:
- We are reworking Armor Penetration, Anti-Tank weapons and enemy armor and health values. As a key part of the rework we have done an initial balancing pass on over 30 weapons and stratagems.
- We are overhauling a number of different enemies to make them feel more rewarding to kill when you use the proper tools to handle them but ensure they still feel formidable. Enemy bots, including Hulks, will have lower armor, and the number of rockets fired by enemies like the Devastator and Gunship will be limited, making combat more balanced. The armor values of particularly tough bug enemies like the Charger, Impaler, and Bile Titan will also be reduced.
- Weapons such as the Autocannon, Heavy Machine Gun, and Anti-Material Rifle will be more effective, providing greater loadout versatility. We are also working towards additional improvements for the flamethrower weapons.
- We’re taking this opportunity to consider new player fantasies and design goals for these weapons and stratagems based on the feedback we’ve received and the trends we’re observing during gameplay.
Are you optimistic Arrowhead will ever find the right balance between the power fantasy players seemingly want and the steep difficulty and extraction gameplay the developers intended? Let us know in the comments section below.

Reverse,
The,
FLAMETHROWER NERF!
Adjust the other weapons accordingly but fix this ugly, poor performing, garbage Flamethrower.
@Xbox_Dashboard The article says it’s getting a damage boost.
Sounds good but do it and I will believe you. I'm completely burnt on this game due to the nerfs and lack of anything really new. These devs stated that they would stop with the nerfs and we got treated with a flamethrower nerf.
@dskatter No. Nonononononono. I want it, the EXACT, way it was. Glorious. It isn't just damage. It's the overall effect of the weapon. It's current 1st target nonsense is ridiculous.
@Xbox_Dashboard
It is getting more armor penetration, too, so it will work better than before. They mention it destroying hulks, for example.
The game is very fun despite the whiny community constantly, well, whining. With each update, the game just gets better and better. Any day now, we'll also hear about the upcoming warbond, too. Yeah buddy!
@The_Wailing_Doom yes I agree. The whiny community and growing toxic player base has been a big put off for me recently. I don't put any stock in anything IGN has to say anymore either.
Where are the big fixes?!
Sorry Super Earth, I fight for the Imperium now lol
Lol looking how whiny Helldivers 2 community asking for buff this or nerf that weapon, it reminds me of how whiny the FGC when comes asking for nerf and buff characters.
Are people aware that the social features have been thoroughly busted for months? Cross-play friend requests don't work for large swaths of the playerbase. It's a scandal they continue to tinker with balancing rather than fix the basics
@The_Wailing_Doom Yeah I play with a few friends for a few hours each week and we still enjoy it and find it crazy how many people jumped on the angry and whiny bandwagon I've never known a community so toxic outside the game.
@The_Wailing_Doom Are you saying you actually enjoyed the nerfs? The broken charger spawn rate?
@Nepp67 the best thing I ever did with this game was take a month or two break and come back to it. It gets so much more fun. Take a break from the game dude, trust me.
still very much enjoying the game, but I do wish some of the premium passes would become cheaper/free after x-amount of time.
I bought Helldivers 2 a couple of weeks ago. I've put around 30 hours into it so far and have been having a ton of fun with it, and the first I knew that anything was wrong was when a blog post popped up in the Steam news feed. If I'm having fun now, I can't wait to see what it's like when Arrowhead "fixes" it 👍
@ShadowofSparta
The game is fun, what can I say?
I just don't understand why they don't buff everything!? It's not a PvP game so it would make this massively more fun (still amazingly fun as is) if I can start changing loadouts and maul some bugs and bots with simple carnage inducing pleasure. Helldivers is one of my top games this year and it's been sad to see the community drag it down so much. Remember, this is a game Helldiver's community, it's fake in the end and just a good bit of fun.
@ProfessorNiggle Yeah that's pretty much what I've done. I'm more focused on Hunt Showdown and Space Marine 2
Right now I’m at level one hundred in H2 and have a little under 300 hours in (mostly playing with randoms). I’ve been a Helldivers fan since the original and have remained a fan.
Not every post launch tweak or bug or what have you has thrilled me but there have been lots of fun enemies released post launch (factory walkers and impalers are things of beauty) and useful weapons (even with the fire nerf the new fire shotgun aka the cookout is a beast and I’d say the only complete joke of a weapon is the knife) added.
For my money a big part of the fun of Helldivers has always been the high level of challenge. I like it best when my team completes the objectives, picks up all the samples and successfully extracts but those successes are only fun because of the tough enemies we overcame.
Shrugs It appears a lot of H2’s initial success was driven by the power fantasy crowd so I don’t blame the developer for chasing them. If the game stops being a challenge to a solid team on the highest difficulty levels (unlikely but possible) I’ll simply move on.
Masses? I wouldn't call 20k concurrent the masses.
And I doubt they will have added all the fun back.
Thinking their meta was more important than our fun means they truly don't get it.
They had it and squandered it.
I will never be the thing again, as it only burnt hot for a few months before they torched themselves.
I haven't played since the PSN bs. I would like to return, but unless they unnerf ***** to the point where people can play solo and have fun too, in just gonna leave it on the proverbial shelf.
