A leaked image from the PS5 Pro’s settings – which we won’t republish here but you can view on the ResetEra forums – appears to imply that Sony’s supercharged system could make dramatic enhancements to your PS4 library.
The toggle, named ‘Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games’, claims it can “improve the image quality of PS4 games to enjoy higher quality for some games”. It doesn’t clarify exactly what it’s doing to achieve this, but we wonder if it’s using PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) to upscale games running at a lower resolution.
Sony did touch on this in a PS Blog post earlier in the year, but it’s yet to elaborate. “Enhanced Image Quality for PS4 games is also available to improve the resolution on select PS4 games,” wrote co-CEO Hideaki Nishino.
If the language seems cautionary then we wouldn’t pay too much attention to that. Ever since Sony got sued for saying Killzone: Shadow Fall runs at 1080p on PS4 (its multiplayer resolution was actually 900p) it’s been very particular with its wording, avoiding definitive statements.
Not all PS4 games got updated for PS5 Game Boost or PS4 Pro, so some kind of system-wide upscaler for the remainder of the library could really add value to the PS5 Pro. We’ll need to wait until next week to find out exactly how this works and what it achieves, though.

If this could somehow, magically, make Bloodborne run at 60 FPS, that alone might justify the $700 price point.
And nobody tag me telling me how this is impossible. I know.
Sounds great.
Just seen that NX gamer has been sent a Pro by Sony so we should have some more examples and answers next week.
"Sony did touch on this in a PS Blog post earlier in the year, but it’s yet to elaborate. “Enhanced Image Quality for PS4 games is also available to improve the resolution on select PS4 games,”
That's pretty self-explanatory, not much to elaborate on. Very much what the toggle on Pro is doing. And according to the OG, it's system wide so won't be using PSSR.
@themightyant by which time I'll be able to tell you too 😊
@AgentGuapo it’s not impossible. Microsoft did it in SOME games on Xbox Series X, running games at 60fps while the game still thinks it’s at 30fps. Could also be done with frame generation, but then you only get the smoother picture not the lower latency. Either way it’s 99% not going to happen. Shame
@riceNpea he’s already got his mitts on it so should be a few days before. Plus, with all due respect, I’ll take his detailed scientific analysis over your word good sir!
@themightyant
Glad he got his - from what I heard DF got 1 or more a day or 2 ago, but I didnt know about him (all DF have done so far is based on captures taken during visits to Sony).
Not sure if game tech reviews will be governed by the review embargo, which may be the 6th with unboxings on 4th.
Good thing if true. I know my gaming monitor has VRR and this makes it possible (via PS5 settings) to apply VRR to games that don’t officially support it. Haven’t tested it properly, but I get the impression in some games it does actually improve the smoothness of gameplay.

THEY CAN'T KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH THIS!!!!😭😭😭😭😭
I thought the ps5 was supposed to do that 😩
@themightyant you sure? I was going to take it apart and stick it under an electron microscope 😊
Nothing will improve Bloodborne enough to impress me unless Bluepoint get a hold of it
@Judal27 the ps5 plays ps4 games in the pro boosted versions. There may be games that might be enhanced a bit more but as far as I'm aware that's about it.
@riceNpea looking forward to your detailed analysis then bro! (I hope you remember how to put it back together)
This was literally supposed to be the point of the PS5’s backwards compatibility.
Like how the original ps5 was supposed to do?
Won't be PSSR as that's done developer side not something you can just switch on. They've said 'select' PS4 games will have improved resolution so probably some sort of super sampling like the PS4 Pro had on a few older titles
That's interesting, I wonder if it's some kind of plugin to simply take PS4's internal render resolutions and output using PSSR
@Chaosbros super sampling on PS4 Pro was just for those who were still on 1080p screens to get a small visual benefit of a game that could internally render above it. Something along those lines would be of no use to the PS5 Pro
INCREDIBLE! THE PS5 PRO IS FOR KIIIIIIIINNNNNGGGGGSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!
You know, we're 5 days from launch and we've essentially seen extremely limited gameplay from the pro. It's really no wonder its not selling in the states. (Still available everywhere for preorder)
Youd think sony would be screaming from the mountaintop...
@AgentGuapo It won’t improve frame rates. This is about image quality/resolution.
@Runex2121 Ideally, a successful launch should be a product available for everyone who wants one to buy.
The idea that a system should be completely sold out so no one can buy it otherwise it’s not a success is an odd one.
@AgentGuapo won't happen. Bloodborne's physics engine is tied to a framerate of 30fps
Bloodborne has been accessed by the same person with the Pro Retail Unit and has no changes in FPS or Resolution.
@Mikey856 and then changed the whole game to something else 😂
„Sony’s supercharged system could make dramatic enhancements to your PS4 library“
That contains more drama than the Resetera post.
I probably won't replay much PS4 games in the next couple years. There is too much new stuff to play these days. By the time PS6 comes out I assume not only will we have a pretty good read on the improovements, they'll probably be more solid too. That'll be my time to test it all out^^
@themightyant not a problem, I've got loads of them. I'm scalping them to anyone with an electric car.
@get2sammyb depends. Sony is likely to expect a run on both PS5 because it's discounted, and the Pro. They will gauge how quickly the Pro sells its first run of consoles, and how many PS5 Slim units are being bought and adjust its production capacity as required.
@get2sammyb yes. I know. That’s why I said so in my original post.
@SlipperyFish see comment above.
I would pay $1500 for 30 years anniversary edition and its backward compatible from PS1 to PS5.
They should made 12k Units for that.
Well obviously it will otherwise what's the point buying it. But still don't see why people need a pro and pay all that money just to play an old PS4 game with slightly improved graphics from the base 5
I remember seeing the same story about PS4 Pro with the few selected PS2 and PS3 games that Sony made available...and the reality was that unless developers released an enhancement patch there were no improvements aside from the faster loading as it was only logical that newer HDDs would automatically improve the loading times.
How did push go from being critical to sounding like marketing copy on this thing? Pressure from Sony handlers? Just following the poll and riding the wave in whatever direction?
Why are we making news about it enhancing PS4 games? That's both pretty much the only thing Sony has actually said since the beginning it does, and also it's fairly pathetic if a major bullet point of the pro is that the standard model was so pathetic since the start that is didn't significantly improve old games while saying it would.
@NEStalgia : Sadly advertisement money talks
The only reason i would consider to replay PS4 games is 60fps. I doubt Sony will implement this feature…….But, there’s hope?
Seriously, a patch or PC port could also scratch that itch. I guess fomo, misplaced nostalgia and fanboyisms have worn most readers here down to adhere to Sony's current strategy to milk us for every penny for a bunch of lazy rehashes of things they just sold us not too long ago... like the ps5pro
Why is everybody so obsessed with 60 frames per second no wonder Sony is ripping everyone off
@tameshiyaku get a new sales pitch because nobody is listening.
What better than a pro current generation console for the last generation in a barren generation with new PS4 remasters?
@Pepsiman_100 Sony never said the ps5 would improve ps4 games beyond what the ps4 Pro would. Why do people not read or listen to things properly? And if Sony did make this claim about the ps5 please post a link to it.
What's with the Bloodborne image ?
It's FPS can't be improved by the PS5 Pro even if they wanted, due to being hard capped at 30fps - not something that can be changed without meddling with it's code...
As for the resolution... maybe it'll make it a bit clearer, but without improved textures that won't serve us much.
Snake oil at its finest.
Loving all the seethe in these comments
@ButterySmooth30FPS welcome to pushsquare.
@Northern_munkey I wonder if these people have similar meltdowns when a more expensive model of their car comes out?
@Batman2049 obviously no one is paying all that money just for this one feature, it's just a nice to have
@get2sammyb - while I dont disagree, typically constraints stop that. I cant recall the last console that was easy to get at launch. Some easier than others, but the last 20 years has seen rough starts for consumers.
(Its a much longer issue though, i remember waiting in line overnight for a 360, but had no issues with the og xbox. The saturn was hard to get, but the 32x and sega cd were easy, the nes and snes were also challenges at launch in my area)
@Judal27 So every PS5 also has a game-boost mode (same as PS4 Pro) for older games. What has been horribly lacking in the discussion of PS5 Pro, is whether or not their boost mode is any different. If it's one of those "if the frame-rate is uncapped" sorts of modes, I doubt that it will be that impressive.
The focus "appears" to be on up-scaling the older game resolutions (possibly by PSSR). This won't change frame-rates (other than allowing some games that didn't hit caps). Is it better than a kick in the head,... sure... but I think we'd all prefer to play ALL of those older 30 FPS games at a solid 60...
@LowDefAl welcome to the internet... where the point is to generate content that keeps people busy commenting (complaing and/or congratulating) for clicks/ad revenue. The reality is I think, there's not a lot of PS news (at least good playstation news) - and you'd have thought that Sony would be swamping us with PS5 Pro news, but their strategy is to basically let fan-sites like PushSquare do all the heavy lifting for news. Which... is a very hit-and-miss strategy IMHO.
Getting new pc parts could seriously improve the quality of your games! 😮 Essentially the same, but you don't have to pay for a whole new one.
@Pepsiman_100 @nessisonett False. PS5 brute forced PS4 game Framerates via backwards compatibility not visuals. Visuals have always been max at PS4 Pro specs. Please stop lying. Thanks.
I wonder if the improvement can make PS4 games that doesn't have 60 fps boost even being played on PS5 such as LEGO CITY UNDERCOVER, Spyro games, Crash Bandicoot Trilogy, CTR, etc suddenly can reach 60 fps on PS5 PRO. 🤔
As expected it won't improve framerates but it will improve the image.
@Anti-Matter No it won't because it can't bypass a framerate lock. Trust me if it could Sony would make sure we would know Bloodborne is 60fps on Pro.
Lmao “seriously improve” with not a single example of it…
@nessisonett No it wasn't. The PS5 runs games at PS4 Pro settings and brute forces framerates to whatever the lock is meaning a game like Monster Hunter World that has an unlocked framerate can reach 60fps on PS5 or a game like Just Cause 3 that had an awful framerate is now a stable 30fps on PS5. The PS5 Pro is using its upscale tech to now increase the image of PS4 settings something the PS5 is incapable off doing.
@themightyant Thing is MS from my understanding had to directly do it themselves for Series consoles. It wasn't the X/S magically doing it themselves it was MS having to put in the work their end hence why only some games got a framerate boost and not all.
I saw the manual and apparently the Pro has 18gb of ram as well, which I was not expecting.
@ButterySmooth30FPS I suppose they do if they manage to win one in the gt7 daily race challenges..
@themightyant Thats great, nx gamer is the most technically competent guy working in this field and it will be interesting to see what he can reveal. I rate him over and above the guys at DF, who themselves are very knowledgeable..
@Judal27 We've been bamboozled, hoodwinked!

@Titntin
Not long now only 4 more sleeps 🤣
Got Dragon Age, started the opening on PS5 but will wait now to play on Pro.
So far really enjoying the game and combat.
It’s a must at 60fps for me, so blurry when panning around at 30fps. MB also off for me.
Looking forward to having 60fps in fidelity mode or whatever Pro enhancements we are getting.
@Titntin
My PS Direct has changed to shipping and track package is now available.
@OldGamer999 Thanks for the heads up. Mine is in a similar state 😊
@Titntin absolutely agree!
You know what else should improve with the PS5 Pro? The availability of the disc drives.
Looks like I'll be putting some games on hold until I can find one later (I'll probably buy Alan Wake 2 digitally instead).
@Voltan was just in my local Walmart yesterday and there were two of them in stock. Is the scarcity really that bad? If so I'm considering grabbing them even though I'm not getting a pro.
From the images I've seen it just looks like the sharpness has been turned up on the tv , the ps5 pro is nice to have but hardly essential , and if you play on quality mode mainly on ps5, I'm struggling to see the difference really.
@zupertramp idk about North America but in Europe you can't get them anywhere (even PS Direct, which is not available in my country anyway) other than resellers listing them at €200 or more - and it's been that way since September (shortly after the Pro announcement)
Supercharged? More like Superfart.
@JohntheRaptor you must be that nobody then
Talking of Shadow Fall, pretty wild that never made it to PS Plus, huh?
Don't care. Still not buying one. Switch 2 and (eventually) PS6, ahoy.
@Titntin
Pro release specs.
Thought TFLOPS was going to be higher.
Seems to have DDR5 2GB, which PS5 does not. what does that do and help with?
CPU - x86-64-AMD Ryzen Zen 2 8-core/16-thread
GPU - 16.7 TFLOPS, RGNA AMD Radeon
RAM - GDDR6 16 GB + DDR5 2 GB
Storage - 2TB SSD
Power Supply - 390W
Dimensions - Approx. 388 mm x 89 mm x 216 mm (15.28 inches x 3.50 inches x 8.50 inches)
Weight - Approx. 3.1 kg (6.83 lb.)
@Titntin
Got another tech question for you.
I take it if a game say Dragon age runs 60fps at 720p and upscales using FSR.
On PS5 Pro will FSR be totally replaced and PSSR used instead?
I think the answer is yes.
@Voltan in Oceania everywhere still has stock of the pro for order. Only thing sold out is the disc drive
Let me download my copy of Driveclub I own & play it at 4k 60fps & I’ll buy one.
@OldGamer999
I wouldn't get hung up on Tflops figures, they have always been a silly metric to compare as unless the systems have identical architecture, they are not comparable figures.
The additional DDR5 has not previously been discussed and its use will either be directed by the OS, or more likely from the engine programmer, NX gamer now has his hands on one - he will videos within days of what he learns and I'd recommend you watch as he is likely to cover lots of these things.
@OldGamer999 Only if they patch the game to run different on a pro. I suspect they would as its a quick win.
@Titntin
Yes, I am hoping they use PSSR instead of FSR
If not there is little point in it.
I think it is a shame the GPU is not Nivida for this generation then we would have had DLSS.
Which is currently the best out there.
@OldGamer999
I dont think its a shame at all. PSSR is in its infancy and is performing well already. Given Sony's record in post picture processing (no one beats their TV processing), I fully expect PSSR to continue to develop fast and become at least the equal of DLSS. I also believe there are big advantages in controlling and developing your own code base so you are not reliant on anyone else, and concentrate your own solution on things that make sense for your own hardware.
@Titntin
Totally agree.
Also have an X95L and the Sony TVs best upscaling and motion control I have ever seen.

@Titntin
New vids on YouTube.
Just watched all the upgrade videos on line on my 65” x95l to get a better effect.
So glad I ordered a Pro. It was very sharp and detailed especially SM2 and Last of us 2.
Dragon Age looked a step up as well.
Remember I’m still watching on YouTube even though at 4K, so console it will shine a bit more.
Felt so sharp and so smooth when panning.
It’s like a double up for me as always play at 60fps.
@Titntin
It’s happening.
Your parcel will be with you today between 10:52 and 11:52
@OldGamer999 12:30 to 13:30 for me mate - both of the ones I have ordered!
@Titntin
It’s just arrived, set up time now.
Good luck with yours.
@OldGamer999 All set up and rolling...
@Titntin
Enjoy I’m finding some games using PSSR well.
Let me know your expert opinion please and experiences.
@Titntin
Hope you enjoying your Pro?
I’m finding it great and have that warm feeling I’m playing the best console version of games.
Went mad yesterday and purchased Sony A95L QD OLED 65”. Will be arriving next Saturday.
Now I’m really set up for games, movies and TV.
@OldGamer999 congrats, great set. Not something I would buy as I have a very bright room and oled is simply not bright enough to work in here (I have an LG oled at the dimmer end of the room and I need to use blinds before I get the oled pop). The mini led is far better option for my room, otherwise I would pick the same set!
Im enjoying having the pro, nice to iron out the issues I had with some games and get extra res from games with dynamic resolution..
