Are you noticing a pattern yet? Sony and Bandai Namco are enjoying a very fruitful relationship, with a number of Japan Studio’s old favourites getting licensed out.
You may recall Freedom Wars Remastered releasing earlier in the year, and you’ve probably already read our story about Everybody’s Golf: Hot Shots. But rhythm RPG Patapon is also joining the party, with Patapon 1+2 Replay coming to PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch on 11th July.
This one is interesting because Sony did already remaster the first two Patapon games for the PS4, but they weren’t the best versions.

This new edition will actually include some additional quality-of-life features, like difficulty settings which will relax the timing conditions for the gameplay.
Other than that, though, you’re looking at Japan Studio’s original PSP classics, repackaged for a new era. If you want to continue the saga, Patapon 3 launched into PS Plus Premium recently, as part of Sony’s emulation efforts.
Will you be replying these legendary rhythm games? Beat it in the comments section below.

If you don't have a real handheld to pair this with this is the best way to go.
Please I want an Ape Escape Trilogy and God of War Greek Saga on Switch next
Getting my prayer circle ready for Ape Escape, LocoRoco, Gravity Rush, Puppeteer, and Tokyo Jungle to get licensed out.
What’s the point of this when 1&2 are already available for PS4, and by extension PS5?
We've reached the gaming stage where reveal trailers show difficulty settings front and center now. Thanks Soulslikes, maybe I'll give these a go.👍
Ape Escape would be tricky to license out considering it has some PS elements in it but I would love to see Bamco do something about it but Gravity Rush 1 &2 would be dope once it's been ported to modern consoles
Sony testing out the waters it looks like to see if there's interest in a new entries, pretty smart.
@VeldinX the available ones run on a psp emulator
The new ones are native ports with new QoL features and new content
@RBMango everyone but ApeScape. The Apes never looked better than in Astro Bot, Team Asobi feels like it's ready to make ApeScape legendary again.
@VeldinX Switch and PC.
@Americansamurai1 this is the take. This is why this move is cool.
Welp now it's their Japanese games' turns (and after i had said they were keeping them so close to their chest lol) after they ported all their western stuff to pc. Once I see gravity rush and bloodborne ported it's over. PS is going the way of Xbox just from a different angle. But still if this leads to new content from some of these I'm all for it
I think I will my purchase the Switch Version of this collection. It fits so well in a handheld form, so will be most enjoyable playing on the switch for sure!
@GymratAmarillo I can see locoroco next. Man would love a new locoroco.
@GymratAmarillo I would hyperventilate if Team Asobi announced they were making a new Ape Escape.
This is wild to see ported to Nintendo! Good for the patapon fans, frankly I wanted to beat in my own skull to the rhythm after 10 minutes of playing it. Maybe Locoroco will get ported next!
@darkswabber I doubt Sony will port God of War Greek saga to Switch tbh.
@anoyonmus I didn’t think sony would bring anything to Switch at all yet here we are, 5 games in.
They clearly don’t see the Switch as a competitor.
I'm perfectly fine with a lot of the dormant IPs making a surprise return. Really hoping to see Gravity Rush 1+2 make a return as a port.
The audio quality of Patapon 1 remaster was pretty bad by todays standards... enough that I never finished it. It sounds similar in the very short clip they posted here which is a shame. Some sort of AI upscaling would have gone a long way.
Everything, but Xbox. Lol
At this point I think it's 50/50 that some form of Astro Bot will make its way to Switch 2.
Also, the hierarchy of game companies is firmly established now:
1. Nintendo
2. Valve
3. PlayStation
4. Xbox
That's the current order of operations. Nintendo will receive first-party releases from the companies listed beneath and they will not reciprocate. On the opposite end, Xbox puts their first-party on all the above and get nothing in return.
It's just sad and ironic how Totoki claim that Sony "lack of original IP's". But now they're too lazy to remaster their original-unique IP like Freedom Wars, Everybody's Golf, and Patapon to the point they licensed them and made it as a multiplatform.
And i don't know who's idea is this, either Hermen, Nishino, Totoki, or maybe all of them.
@PuppetMaster And which of Sony's teams would you want spending their time remastering these games?, these games will struggle to reach a million sales and that's with them being multiplatform. The only way these smaller games are getting remasters are by Sony loaning out the IP's, otherwise it's not worth the time, money and effort for Sony to do themselves.
@truerbluer The only reason these smaller Sony IP's are coming to Switch is because they aren't made by Sony themselves and MLB has to be multiplatform due to licencing agreements. Switch 2 won't be getting games like TLOU, God of War, Horizon, Uncharted, Tsushima etc and not just because it won't be able to run these games.
@PuppetMaster Totoki wasn't talking about Sony lacking IPs but more to do with ones that have worldwide appeal like Star Wars, Harry Potter, Pokemon etc.
@UltimateOtaku91 Do you honestly believe current Sony leadership aren't considering ways to port those games to Switch 2? I wouldn't put it past them to license them out to 3rd parties to do the work just like they did Lego Horizon.
@truerbluer The Switch was powerful enough to play some older Playstation made PS4 games but they never made it over. Time will tell, I can't see happening myself but if it does happen il be the first to tag you in a comment saying how right you was 😅.
Heck yeah. I adored this game on the original psp. Try to emulate this game on deck but failed. This is definitely a happy news to me. Can’t wait. I might get this for my deck oled. 😆
Playstation is dead
@UltimateOtaku91 hard truth right there
@omno were was the people interested in the "unique" ones when they were ported to PS4? Patapon didn't sell to the point the only reason we knew there would be a Patapon 2 remaster was the logo on a mural in a convention.
@Keyblade-Dan I would argue the exact opposite. This recent licensing initiative is one of the rare things PlayStation has done this generation that actually honors its heritage. I think allowing things like Patapon and Everybody's Golf to leave PlayStation's old Japan Studio IP dungeon and get a new lease on life on Switch and PC is the opposite of death.
@UltimateOtaku91 "And which of Sony's teams would you want spending their time remastering these games?"
There's Nixes, Bluepoint, and every month Sony can port multiple PS1 & PS2 games for PS4+5 by their own. So i'm sure Sony have enough resources to remaster these games. It's not like Sony is a small company lol.
"these games will struggle to reach a million sales and that's with them being multiplatform"
It will struggle to reach a million if Sony didn't properly advertised them.
"otherwise it's not worth the time, money and effort for Sony to do themselves"
Thanks for reminding me that the current Sony doesn't care that much when comes to their classic niche IP's. For them either AAA and live service games or gtfo 😔
i think sony should have some type of partnership with nintendo , why make a new handheld when you could just work with the switch 2 , even if its just bringing sony cloud gaming , and license out a few games like this.
Don't the remasters already exist on PS4 already (own a few), what more is there to offer with this 'for the news/new addition/add a collection subtitle'. I'm all for this for sales and people to buy them/support these series but it's also kind of odd that's all. Especially for PS5 versions other then 4K? Or new audience with Switch, what's the point? I get not advertising a PS4 remaster version but I mean come on offer people something with the PS5 version.
4K & maybe new trophies? In the news/shiny? Sure.
Even Nintendo makes HD/deluxe versions have something to them of gameplay differences or per the console gimmicks or more content or whatever quality of life, not just goes, eh here, buy them fans/newcomers we have nothing else to offer just buy the new shiny resolution version.
Sure 7th to 8th definitive editions and such but in this case to me it seems more eh make a PS5 version, put it in 4K and see if it sells over the PS4 remasters.
Claphands have gone their way now and Sony offer Everybody/Hot Shots on Switch. While cool for Switch owners no doubt. Sony really has no idea what to do with their Japan Studios titles and offers them to Bandai Namco which is fine and for some games like Freedom Wars for any platform it's nice for those not getting a Vita for it/sales not really doing much there.
But Sony are too focused on sales and off load the smaller IPs and Claphands/Bokeh and others are doing fine on their own it seems. Sure their contracts was a factor but otherwise besides Astro or Polyphony too many western games or too many BIG game focus. Less Song of the Deep, Pentiments in-between it seems.
Freedom Wars it was stuck on Vita that's fine but the Loco Roco, Parappa and Patapon all have PS4 remasters and aren't stuck on PSP/Vita (digital) so I don't see much point in this for PS5 other then a 4K version.... For Switch sure that's a different platform but otherwise why PS5? To be in the news/shiny then re-advertising the remasters.
Unless additional content who cares about this. To support the series sure I'm all for that it and Switch as another platform for it I understand, and this among other Japan Studios series/one offs, need as much support as they can get. So licensing them to Bandai Namco is great, for them to get more audience appeal and such.
But if it doesn't add anything for the PS5 version, other then to be in the news and bundled and 4K what good is it? Pointless by people that don't know any better and buy into 'NEW'.
Wow it's new and shiny buy it people that haven't, having more messaging worth then 'look at these remasters we offered' and people go oh, why would 'I want the remaster, I want the shiny new version because it's shiny & new'.
For Switch it's great, a new audience that may actually care to experience it for once then the niche PS audience that has a sizeable audience no doubt & people that loved Japan Studios games, now Nintendo owners being more into games like these or Indies on PS platforms but just Japan Studios games marketing or sales just not doing enough for Sony?
What more can they offer, wow 4K Patapon.... it already looks good of it's artstyle in 1080p.
Sony need to offer Puppeteer or others over to PS4/5 is what they need to do.
@VeldinX I thought the same for Switch sure new audience, but otherwise what a 4K PS5r version and shiny new product in the news. Lol.
Otherwise I don't see much of point other than a second chance to sell them rather then it being an upgrade besides resolution.
I doubt any new content at all. Also 3 not here but is on PS+.... seems kind of pointless of a reselling to me too. They can't give people TOO much value or sell ALL of them why would they. They can't make all of them into a bundle. If for time sure but otherwise why would it be that much effort other then they couldn't be bothered to offer them all.
That or trophies if they are different or it's made different and doesn't connect to the PS4 remaster trophies.
@darkswabber but God of War is like their biggest IP (kinda like their baby essentially). Japan studio games will come to Switch bur I doubt something like God of War could come.
@truerbluer Oof, Astro Bot on Switch 2 might be a stretch tbh.
Thanks for cleaning that mess up @Pushsquare 👍 Some people really need professional help.😢
legit confused it doesn't have 3 on board too, not like it was released way after on another platform. I'll be very happy to play this portable on Switch to remember the PSP days.
For people asking what's the point because of the PS4 versions - those PS4 versions are really bare bones ports, not remasters. I tried to play the PS4 version of Patapon 1 and I found it super interesting, but brutally difficult. The timing windows are very demanding, at a certain point the game becomes heavily reliant on maintaining perfect timing chains, and there's no setting to adjust for display lag. I could not get past the half-way point no matter how hard I tried. Difficulty settings and input lag adjustment are extremely welcome.
Question is what's the price? I don't think I'd pay more than $20 total for both games. I played the original via PS+.
if they're focused on leasing out PSP-Vita games, Soul Sacrifice (Delta) seems like a clear next choice. Hell, maybe Bandai can help Sony remember they have a damn good Uncharted game stuck on the Vita.
@SuntannedDuck2 “That or trophies if they are different or it's made different and doesn't connect to the PS4 remaster trophies.”
Yeah, it will definitely have new trophies, and most likely one shared list between the two games. PS5 can’t have two lists for one game app.
@VeldinX Shared list fair.
Especially compared to PS3, Vita and PS4 have had trophies shared or separate so people would play 3 versions. Or whatever the case.
But still fair for trophy hunters, new trophies, fixes, new audiences, etc. It's cool for that side of things.
