While it’s Sony’s competitor Microsoft who’s been promoting its cloud gaming initiatives heavily, PlayStation has been quietly pushing ahead with its own plans.
The streaming quality on PS Plus Premium is underrated, and the Japanese giant has been expanding its support by making games you own streamable directly to the PS Portal, expanding its capabilities beyond just Remote Play.
Cloud Dosage, a website dedicated to all things cloud gaming, has been keeping tabs on Sony’s support, and reports that a further 371 PS5 games have been added to the system’s cloud gaming library this week.
Among those supported are some big releases, like Helldivers 2, Silent Hill 2, Sonic X Shadow Generations, Warhammer 40K: Space Marine, and, ironically, Xbox’s very own Sea of Thieves. If you own any of these games and are subscribed to PS Plus Premium, you’ll now be able to play them directly from the cloud on both the PS5 and PS Portal, without needing to download them.
It must be reiterated that in order to stream these games you’ll need to own them.
Still, if you’re interested, you can find the full list of the new games whitelisted through here, with the total number of titles supported now approaching 2,000 overall.
Clearly there’s still a long way to go for cloud gaming, but Sony seems to be in a sturdy position should the sector ever meaningfully take off.
Perhaps the best thing about PlayStation’s approach here is that it’s not shoving it down anyone’s throat: it’s slowly investing in its cloud capabilities and offering it as a meaningful value add for PS Plus Premium, which is the right way to go about it.

Alot of good games in that list 👌 Portal has really turned into a decent device.
Not shoving down anybody's throat? Sure, but them not providing the necessary tools to make it accessible for ps plus premium members is a real sticking point. Having it only on the home console makes it very redundant except for demoing a game, and I'm not getting a portal. They need to finally release an android and iOS app as well as browser support, but they don't. The streaming quality is great, but my suspicion is that they don't have the infrastructure in place for more users.
@tameshiyaku Remote Play was working perfectly before updates. Now it even won't boot up.
@tameshiyaku I think they're just taking things slow. I'm sure they know where they want to go with this it's just they're gradually rolling out the features.
Like you say, the quality is great so now it's about scaling that up to support more devices and more users.
One step at a time.
"Sure, but them not providing the necessary tools to make it accessible for ps plus premium members is a real sticking point. Having it only on the home console makes it very redundant except for demoing a game, and I'm not getting a portal."
So they have provided the necessary tools, you just don't want to use them.
Well that makes the Portal a seriously useful device. Really glad to have got one.
Aside from growing the streaming catalogue, the one thing that would truly elevate the Portal for me would be the ability to actually turn on the PS5 from the device itself (I never leave the console in rest mode). The DualShock controllers can do it.
Please add Monster Hunter Wilds 🙏, would be great playing with the misses co op.
Also just clicked on the link and in that article it says they are currently only available to stream on the PS5 😩.
In terms of streaming quality Playstation is way ahead of Xbox, with 4K support.
The Stream quality on Portal is absolutely excellent I have to say.
I’ve not tried it on my PC via a network cable to get a direct comparison with GF Now Ultimate but if they can get to that level, the service could become a genuine alternative to owning a console.
£120 a year for Premium, a load of included games, and the ability to Stream all of the included games plus any new purchases, would certainly be extremely attractive versus £240 a year for GF Now.
The Xbox streaming was terrible such that I and many others use GF Now since Gamepass libraries were added.
Whilst it is 'streaming', its not like Microsofts more 'Netflix' style approach where streaming to ANY device from Servers (rather than your OWN console) is more Consumer friendly/accessible.
Sony's require you to buy Sony Hardware to stream from a Sony Platform to another Sony Platform. It maybe 'higher' quality, but maybe that is down to the fact its built solely for Sony Hardware - not suitable for ALL inc Mobile 4G/5G Networks.
I can already stream digital games I own from the console itself as well as disc a game if it's in the drive but surprise Sony now wants you to pay again to play your same games
So - have anyone been able to confirm that these games can be streamed directly to the PS Portal? The cited article says that "Unfortunately, these purchasable PlayStation cloud games can only currently be played on an actual PS5. "
And the article continues with "we expect the PlayStation Portal cloud gaming library to expand to include these purchaseable cloud gaming titles, in the future."
What if I own the games physical? Genuine question. I assume that doesn't work?
@BAMozzy Streaming via Wifi is already a compromised way of playing. Streaming on a phone via cellular connection with mediocre (case with buttons) or poor controls (display touching) is a very poor experience, way poorer than the usual Switch port. And in my experience, people want gaming for having fun.
So I don’t see a substantial disadvantage of Sony‘s requirements!
Damn I thought this meant it was out of Beta for a second
Now if only they’d give us Premium here in Australia instead of the hampered non-streaming “Deluxe” tier… 😫
@Max_the_German Streaming is obviously not the 'best' way to play a Game - but it maybe the only option to play certain games in certain situations - like on the go in Public places. Mobiles are not really designed for gaming and their control schemes, but virtually everyone has one, its better than 'nothing' and is the most 'used' device for 'Gaming'
Without being 'snobby' about Games/Gaming, Mobile has the most Gamers - more than Playstation, Xbox and Switch combined. It maybe the 'weakest' in terms of Graphics/performance etc, but its also something virtually everyone has and the 'entry' point.
The entry point for Sony's gaming is the PS5 with the 'Pro' offering slightly better Graphics/Performance at a Cost. Portal too will cost money. MS's 'streaming' service has little/no Hardware cost (if you already have devices like a Mobile or PC/Laptop/tablet...). If you want better quality 'gaming', the more you spend on hardware etc, the better the experience can be.
This is great news! Unfortunately there’s nothing on that list of 371 games that I own or have plans to play, but this is a start. Most of the list is games I’ve never heard of and many of them look like they’re those small filler games on PSN (The Jumping Pizza, Brotato, etc). Still, some AAA and big releases like the new Yakuza and Silent Hill 2 give me hope that we’ll be able to stream games like Baldur’s Gate 3 or FF7 Rebirth before too long. I’ll admit that if/when it gets to the point that all digital purchases are available on the device, that will be enough for me to shift over to buying digital instead of physical on select games.
Edit: After looking over the list again, there’s some strange inclusions, like the Jackbox Party games…? I guess those can be played online with others maybe? I’ve always considered those to be couch multiplayer experiences with friends in person.
Also some of the games listed were already on the Premium service and were streamable that way, so the 371 number is a little inflated.
@Th3solution Brotato is a fairly decent little roguelike autoshooter actually. Don't throw it in with the likes of "The Jumping Pizza" and all those single button easy platinum games.
@djlard pxplay and chiaki are better options for console streaming over the official remote play app.
Let me play them on my phone and I’ll give you all the money you want.
So far none of the titles are playable on portal.
Also someone else here says portal isn’t working: it’s you not the portal. I’ve connected via wifi and mobile hotspot today no problem.
But none of the titles reported here are playable. I own nearly 700 ps4/ps5 titles and streaming is only available on console at the moment.
@StrickenBiged Oh, good to know. Any food based title immediately gets unfairly lumped in with those other games. My bad.
The only reason it came to my attention was because at first glance I thought it said “Balatro” and I got excited for a minute since I own that. 😅
@Th3solution are you saying BG3 can only be streamed to PS5 and not to Portal? That would be a shame indeed.
@CamPatUK Sorry, I should have clarified — I left out the key word “cloud” stream. You can always still stream any game to the Portal through a PS5 connection (remote play), including BG3, as long as it’s downloaded to your PS5 console, but no direct Portal cloud streaming of games you own (such as BG3) unless they are on PS+ Premium… yet.
I’m not very tech savvy, so I don’t know the in’s and out’s of this stuff, but I assume the larger a game is, the more complex it is to cloud stream. I suspect that’s why this initial group of games they are adding for direct Portal cloud streaming are mostly smaller indie titles. If game size is an obstacle, games like BG3 and Rebirth are probably going to be added much later. Perhaps not until after the program is out of beta.
@Th3solution My friend streamed BG3 recently on PS5. He'd accidently installed that bad patch that got pushed out early and we needed to get a 4 player session started ASAP so he streamed while it was reinstalling in the background.
This is where my confusion came in, I assumed this would also be possible on Portal since the streaming patch?
@CamPatUK Yeah, streaming to the PS5 console is way ahead of the Portal cloud streaming. I think the majority of PS5 games can be cloud streamed to PS5, but a very select few can cloud stream to Portal. Here’s hoping they add more! I would love to have the flexibility to not have to depend on connecting to the PS5.
I’ve not tried connecting the Portal via remote play to PS5 and then streaming through the PS5 whilst playing via remote play on the Portal. The ‘double stream’ would seem to magnify the lag and irregularities of connection, so I’m not sure if that works. I’ve personally never tried.
@Th3solution Interesting idea, lag shouldn't be too bad for BG3 but some games would suffer for sure. I don't have a Portal sadly otherwise I'd upgrade to Premium and try it.
Bit misleading. So you can't stream the games to your portal then? I own lots of these and the only way I can is through remote play. That's not what this article says
I've been streaming the PS3 Ratchet and Clank games through PS Plus, and it's been excellent. Only a couple of little issues in over 10 hours.
