Split Fiction, the just-released new game from co-op specialist developer Hazelight Studios, is already in talks for a movie adaptation.
That's according to a new report from Variety, citing sources at GDC in San Francisco.
Apparently, media company Story Kitchen — which specialises in game-to-film/TV adaptations — is working on putting together a list of names for the cast and crew, as multiple Hollywood studios are making offers for the movie rights.
Story Kitchen's previous credits include the Sonic movie trilogy and Netflix series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, with many others currently in the works. The company has already struck a deal with Amazon for a film based on It Takes Two.
There are currently no other details to speak of, though Variety says there are "more details on the project to come" as it continues to monitor the situation.
Split Fiction has been a barnstorming success, with universal acclaim from critics and very strong early sales.
The story follows a pair of amateur writers who wind up stuck in a simulation of their own fictional worlds, swapping between sci-fi dystopias and whimsical fantasy settings.
We reckon it could work as a fun action adventure flick, but much of Split Fiction's magic comes from the fact it's an interactive experience, designed specifically for two people playing together. While we can easily imagine a more straightforward movie being constructed from this, a lot is going to be lost in translation from one medium to the next, arguably more so than with other games.
Still, assuming this does result in a movie, it'll take years for that to happen, so the jury's out for now.

Nice! That's how you hit the ground running! Although, I'm sure the film will be trash lol.
With Marvel movies not doing the numbers they should be doing at the box office, is making Hollywood nervous. They don't know what to do. They're just throwing darts at the wall to see what sticks. And hopefully, video game movies will stick.
Add in the other flops from the other studios. It's a mess right now, lol.
We still haven’t seen the It Takes Two and A Way Out movies. Can’t really get excited for this one because of that.
Gives me a feel this one will enter development hell just like the other two.
Tbf. The story is really bland. And the worlds are the most cliché they could be. For a game that's fine. But for a movie?
@yazzika Please. Just as many crap movies release as crap games. Why don't you save the smack talk for a game that's actually bad instead of this really good one?
This is could actually work really well as a movie..... with the right direction that is.
Hollywood needs to stop behaving like Viscum album.
More than most game adaptations, this makes little sense to me. The story certainly has its tropic charm but, as the article highlights, these games largely work so well because they are games. Still, like any adaptation, this could be steered in a direction that works well as a film.
@TimelessJubilee I think people are just fed up with superhero movies at this point. Which I understand but I’m still enjoying the mcu and soon the relaunched dcu. TBH I like a lot of video game movies and tv shows to many people these days hate everything especially on YouTube channels 😂.
Wow, who came up with this idea? So original!
@yazzika from what I've seen this could be a fun summer blockbuster movie. It sure has more potential to be good then the minecraft movie.
@TimelessJubilee I adore the Marvel franchise but after 20 something movies, I'm done. Endgame was pretty much my end game.
I cannot see this game becoming a good movie.
Will this be 2 viewer only? Do I have to bring a friend along to be able to watch it?
@yohn777 nah, something like heavy rain, which was such a prime example of how cinematic a game is and people went on how it competes with Hollywood and should have been adapted, would have made a really horrible, cheesy plot hole riddled movie. We have some way better games these days that would be great to adapt, but Josef Fares games aren't that.
What happened to "***** Hollywood"?
