I know it's barely related to the point of the article but this quote: "Civ VII is probably our favourite entry in the storied series" holy crap that's a moment to let you know how massive the gulf is sometimes in what player vs reviewer likes and wants from video games. Like the kind of stuff that informs what sources you'd look at to decide to buy a game or not. Glad I read this.
Would have loved for the actual story progression from 4 to make a return, not only from liking it personally but also seeing as that was the most major thing about that release to differentiate it from the previous ones...but whatever, a $50 level pack for 1+2 made by a different dev with worse reputation is still tempting somehow, such is the power of arcade skating games!
Dunno if this has been addressed but what many think of as a "AA" game in say the 2000's still cost millions of dollars to make. Very different from an indie studio with a few people at most.
I know it's way too late now, but anybody else think it would've made much more sense to have 1/2/3 be its own game and separate 4 into its own or at least stand-alone dlc? It's one of my favorites but considering the removal of the time limit and the massive changes to how you progress in the game, just seems a bit weird to pair it with one of the earlier entries.
Like a few others have said the market didn't f****** disappear dude, what actually happened was executives and shareholders deciding to only follow Ubisoft style "AAA" games (remember Ubi were the ones to popularize that term to begin with) and the corresponding budget inflation that causes, leading to more and more resources(as game development in general rose in costs) being put into those AAA games instead of any other internal studio. Seconding the Nintendo points as well, they have very very tightly controlled budgets specifically so games with less mainstream potential DON'T need to sell millions and millions to make a return. Smart business decisions leading to a happy, even arguably cult-like fanbase. Who would've thought?
Minor point, but "synthy scores" would be more accurately associated with the 80's, right? Haven't played myself but seems like an interesting decision for a game so focused on music and a specific time period.
